The most beautiful game I've ever played on PS3

Post » Wed May 09, 2012 1:15 am

I would really hate that!! The footage looks terrible. I feel bad for the ones who bought Skyrim on older PS3's.
But all I can say is that it doesn't (from what I've seen so far) lag or has any major problems.

I only have an old ps3. So. We'll see. Now the wait is REALLY killing me, knowing it might not be a Skyrim for me after all.

I don't think you should be worried though. If you haven't experienced anything like it with your ps before I don't see why the game should suddenly make anything different.

Didn't experience any freezes or any other problems with the texture or graphics worth mentioning. Did encounter a bandit getting stuck on a stairway though. Well i guess it gave me more time to practice with my bow (which actually requires skill on the console especially with the longer drawing time.
The game lags once in a while when autosaving but you can switch that off
The loading time is nothing compared to oblivion
And about the FPS I didn't notice anything wrong about it. Maybe the ones complaining should buy a new TV with a little more hz :brokencomputer:

Do you know how you download the patch?

Nurufinwe: I didn't need to download any patch before I could begin. But on ps3 it downloads them automatically?

Because the game is bigger, and it requires more memory

I'm concerned now too - I've only got the old one

Why should the PS3 model make any difference? Aside from hard disk sizes and the improved and smaller design of the components in the newer models, the technical specifications - CPU, GPU, RAM etc. - are the same. The only thing I can see that could matter is if eg. freezes are related to heat problems during extended use, where the newer models might have an advantage (but this is obviously going to be even more dependent on your environment anyway).

For what it's worth I've been playing the game for a little under an hour on my 120 GB Slim model. It downloaded and installed a 56 or 58 MB patch on first launch (which was surprisingly numbered version 2.0 instead of the 1.1 I noticed in a stickied thread in the tech forum). Framerate performance has been pretty smooth so far, with perhaps some minor occasional drops from 30 fps into the mid to high 20s.
Right before the game autosaved for the first time - but only the first time - I thought it had frozen, as it was completely locked up for over ten seconds. Then the autosave message appeared and it was working again.
Loading times when entering/exiting buildings etc. are also not as bad as I had feared after reading a few reviews - around 5-8 seconds perhaps.

As far as graphics goes it definitely looks like the evolution of the Oblivion engine that it is. Distant landscape looks a lot better, fog effects are great (I haven't seen snow or rain yet), so is flowing water and the landscape in general looks great. But to my eyes at least that's probably for a large part because the rugged mountainous regions in Winter and Autumn colors are a lot more visually attractive than the mostly generic green forests of Oblivion.
Overall very beautiful for an open world game, but obviously no graphical match for a much more narrowly designed Uncharted 2 or 3.

There's no technical difference between the new and old PS3s. Well, except my launch model still has BC to PS2 games and all the extra ports they took out for the slims, otherwise there is no hardware difference. They should all perform the same.

The best looking open world game, yes. Best graphics ever on PS3? Uncharted would like a word with you.
I played a few hours of Uncharted 3 on the PS3... what is it with that game? Why does everyone love it? I didn't see much of a step, if any past the graphics of Dead Island on XBOX... I'm asking earnestly. Why does everyone love the graphics?

The game, no one can explain for me.. I didn't like it. But I didn't see anything mesmerizing about the graphics. They were good, but they looked pretty standard fair to me at this point: Dead Island or Deus Ex. Does it show something later in the game that blows you away?
GoW 3 blew me away with it's massive Titans and the like...

If the game has been installed onto a PS3 that has low HDD space then stuttering would be more likely, as it would if an older PS3 hadn't had any disk cleanup or system maintenance done for a while. I'd say the stories of it not running well on older PS3's would be more down to this.

I will be playing it on a new 320 Slim but I can whack it onto my old 80 Fat to see if there is any difference.

The OP meant in a Artistic level, not in a Technical (HD-Textures) Level.

I'll delete all game files before skyrim. Won't play my other games for a while :P

The cinematics in FF 13 are the best looking thing in video games to date. Too bad that's about all that game had going for it lol (*cry*)

Computer hardware doesn't run at peak performance from the moment it is made until it dies. It's a long slow decline that is sped up considerably due to overheating and power fluctuation. Cooling efficiency plays a direct role in your hardware's performance as well so the dirtier your hardware is the hotter it will run and the lower the performance will be.

Age of hardware is indeed a factor and I predict many a console will go belly up from 8-16 hr Skyrim marathons. If you have an older machine and want to keep it alive then heed your console care guide and let the hardware cool off for 15 min after every hour of continuous play.

I'm playing on old 80gb PS3. So far no fps drops. Graphics are very nice for an open world game but not the best I've seen on the PS3, but being open world that's to be expected. Shadows are frankly awful, extremely blocky and often have a shimmer/flickering. But again, it's console so I wouldn't expect perfect shadows. Overall it's a step up from Oblivion, but not a massive step.

You rocking HD on a good television?

I have glasses, and a current prescription, thanks! I asked what the diff was, not to be told what I need.
I have a 60 inch HDTV. They looked similar. The leaves on trees in uncharted looked like crap. What did I miss? I didn't finish the game, what's spectacular about the graphics?

I got my ps3 copy delivered today - thanks amazon! - I'm playing on a fat 80g and my tv is far from being the best on the market and skyrim looks AMAZING!
I've not noticed any drop on fps and the graphics and loading times are much better than oblivion. Only issue I had was a freeze for a few seconds on the first autosave but nothing since then.
Well done and thank you Bethesda!

Uncharted is just the best I seen on the PS3 Graphics wise. But I do think that Skyrim is if you take a Artistic level view to it is very good too.

You have to go back in through the series really. Uncharted was ground breaking in graphics when it came out... water effects, foliage and such. Then Uncharted 2 came out... and is basically considered the Empire Strikes Back of the series... the graphics and effects are not only tighter, but the cinematic quality of the game play. Is some of the best fluid transitions of cut-scene cinematic, straight into game play there is, not to mention the overall graphics, perspectives, etc etc...it didn't win GOTY for nothing. U3... from what I am hearing (have not gotten yet) is not a huge leap forward, but more so continuation of the U2 format... with some slight tweaks and improvements. From my understanding it is similar to what some describe as the transition from MW2 to MW3.... nothing really different, but still all good with some improvements.

And have to remember....you are comparing Uncharted series to games like Dead Island and such.... which have come out long after Uncharted. And like all developers, they borrow this and that from other games and developers, often even asking straight up advice from them. Sure there are lots of games that have just as cool graphics, or even cooler scenes within it... but then you also have to throw in genre... and player perspective and opinions.
