Just to chip in, i know its been mentioned before, but the slowdown on older ps3's is down the HDD space. The PS3 will occasionally, depending on the game, allocate a specific % of HDD space as VRAM. Now its irrelevant if you have say.. an 80GB HDD, and only 40GB taken up. Sure thats enough space to install and run the game, along with saves, however that % of VRAM is calculated in comparison to how much memory is used. I cant remember off the top of my head what the formula is, but it basically means that:
80GB HDD with 20GB taken up, has double the amount of available VRAM than those with 40GB used.
Its better to have a 250GB HDD with 50GB used, than 100GB, even though the total amount of VRAM the PS3 will allow a game is never going to take up that extra 150GB, it still limits it further since more memory is in use.
So basically if your hitting slower speeds, make sure youve cleaned it as much as you can, not just so theres enough room for the game, or enough room for the game and a bit of extra memory, take it as low as you can get it without wiping the machine, So obviously dont delete stuff you want to keep, but make sure its as empty as possible.
