Am I the only one who wanted classes to be removed

Post » Wed Aug 08, 2012 1:31 am

Problem is that it would have made it a little less accessible for newbies to ES so I can understand why they removed it.
i didn't have any problem understanding how the system worked first time i played Oblivion, and that was my first RPG, I keep wondering who these people are can't seem to figure anything out themself

No, it makes my character less.
Now Im just a name, and have no profession.

For roleplaying purposes and replayability I prefer lots of skills (about twice what Skyrim has), attributes, classes and birthsigns,

In Skyrim, we are reduced to race and race has become something cosmetic.
Its pitiful.

I agree, they removed speed and jumping height, but Strength, Endurance, Willpower and all of those just added to either M/H/S. Yes Strength added to Melee damage, but it was such a fractional amount, it was hardly noticeable. Now we have perks that influence those levels bar a greater margin.

Before we just had 4 perks per skill that was forced upon the player, now we have many to actually make a choice from.

They could fix that problem by tweaking the stats.

Okay, I know this is not a popular opinion, but hear me out. (although I will admit, I didn't appreciate birthsigns and attributes to be removed)

The reason I didn't like it was because it felt like an arbitrary technicality. I could technically pick warrior but only use magic for the entire game. Thus, I didn't feel like a warrior, I knew I was a mage, but my character being labeled as a warrior just felt annoying. It was like someone telling me that I shouldn't be a mage because I was supposed to be a warrior. Again, I knew I was a mage, screw what some menu said. Now, your class is what you make of it throughout your entire playthrough. The only reason I could think it would be useful was to cheat the system and stay at level one the whole time.

Aren't the classes the same as birthsigns? They are still based on the lore of the constellations. Only difference is that you can choose a different sign throughout your character's life, which I think is a huge benefit.

I agree that they should have added more skills, attributes and birthsigns, but classes, again, not too crazy about them.

I really enjoy Skyrim's new system. It means I can play how I want to play.

i agree, but especially on birthing, it's such a small bonus, what does it matter if some new players picked the wrong sign?

Trust me, they're out there. They buy lots of video games but will never likely ever register here and bother to post about ES because they aren't passionate about it the same way we are. But, they pay $60 just like we do and probably outnumber us 3:1 so Bethesda always keeps them in mind.

Classes get less love than I've thought. Personally, I like them and wouldn't mind if they were back in TES VI, along with attributes.

I loved picking major skills and then thinking up a name for my class.
It could fit his background, his aspirations, I remember an Orc who I gave the class 'Usurper', because he had come to Cyrodiil to conquer it.

I like the notion of picking major and minor skills at the beginning of the game, it allows for replayability because it allows many different ways to experience the game from the get-go.
Skyrim? The lack of choice, the lack of meat on the bones and the lack of RPG just makes it less interesting to replay the game.

Those are Standing Stones, and from what I've heard in Oblivion, you could both have a Standing Stone and Birthsign.

I want birthsigns and attributes back, but I'm not that upset about classes being removed, but maybe that's because I'm not too clear what classes did in older games and how they made others react to you. Did they actually have an effect on the world and what your player could do, or were they more like the races in Skyrim are, where every once in a while someone might note your race but other than that it doesn't feel different?

No, but it's just a feature placed in to make your character, whatever they are portraying to be, more fun to play. So, you want your birthsign to stay as one thing for the character you create?

i agree, but especially on birthing, it's such a small bonus, what does it matter if some new players picked the wrong sign?

There was difference of day and night between the Apprentice and the Atronach.
One could say that the first made mages easy-mode and the latter hardcoe-mode.

This mattered because it took effect from the beginning of the game and could not be changed.
It was a part of your character.

I realise that, those were extreme, but for most other signs, like the warrior or the mage, the serpent, it never mattered.

But the standing stones in Oblivion only lasted a short time. Which is why I never used them.

Nah, they just give boosts for specific skills and attributes. I enjoy making custom classes, especially thinking of names for them.
Classes, when you look at it, are quite a small aspect of a game, but I feel like it gave characters some more diversity.

Even if it was mostly flavour, it was more than we have now, which is nothing.
Roleplaying is better supported by something than it is by nothing, therefore it was a bad design decision.

Your birthdate isn't supposed to matter in this game. It's a mundane thing that has no benefit to your character. You're character doesn't even have a backstory, technically, and you don't have dialogue options to tell npc's about yourself, so what does it matter?
