The Skyrim Dead Is Dead Thread III

Post » Sat Dec 17, 2011 1:19 am

Urma Gorku made his wife a full set of glass armour, and himself a Daedric helmet and armour. All without engaging in a single fight. Life gets markedly easier for an expert armourer once the cash comes rolling in. The work left for the Companions is rather trivial; a snow wolf here, some trolls there... Nothing the whelps can't handle. Urma has his eyes on a far more interesting adventure now. Blackreach.

Lesson learned from this build? Armourer/enchanter combination is incredibly overpowered.

Did a lot of leveling on S'Thassa last night thanks to her 'discovery' of Enchanting, however it's becoming clear that combining Sneak Archery with Conjuration and Illusion is just too messy where perks are concerned, which has me seriously considering dumping the magic and taking Pickpocket and Lockpicking instead, since I don't need to perk LP to open Master-level locks and can dump those into things like Light Armor, Alchemy, and the rest of Smithing instead.

There's also the fact that Archery with a top-end bow combined with high Sneak means that pretty much anything not an Ancient Dragon dies to one sneak critical, which doesn't leave much for a summon to do. I haven't bothered bringing a companion along either, since they don't understand how to properly pull off a reverse ambush when sneaking through a mausoleum full of 'sleeping' Draugr. Hell, they don't even understand how to sneak in the first place; their idea of 'stealth' is waiting until an enemy comes into their LOS before executing a banzai charge instead of just charging to begin with.

If I wasn't playing Dead-is-Dead it would be easier to pull off the build, since I wouldn't be committing precious enchantment slots to Resist Magic and could instead enchant with Fortify Conjuration or Illusion. The overriding need to drastically reduce high-tier spell costs really doesn't play well with the need to layer survival enchantments, and at high levels you really want anti-magic protection so the local hedge-wizard doesn't one-shot you with a Thunderbolt or something.

He's gone? I just came on to report my first DID play. Trying to retrieve Nettlebane! Anyone else actively involved in this from previous games. It's quite a fun way to play.

Ok, I'll go for a DiD run, here's my character:

Clagius Valedis
Mercenary
Born - Unknown
Died - Unknown
Male Imperial
Level - 1

From the journal of Clagius Valedis

Morndas, 6am, 17th of Last Seed, 4E201

"I knew Skyrim held promise, I just crossed the border and instantly started to listen to rumors of skirmishes between Legion and the Stormcloaks, I have to aproach both groups to see what's the pay with each one.
I still have my other goal to acomplish too, lets see how that goes, after so much time wasted in the library searching for information on the artifacts of the Daedra, I only hope these shrines can lead me to anything."

Clagius and his journal where found several months later, he died in the Embershard mine by the hand of a bandit.

EDIT: 20 minutes, well, that was fast...

Hi guys.

I guess DiD has always been my playstyle. I can't bear to have my character, who I'm very attached to, die during the course of her adventures. So, I suppose it's time to throw my hat into the ring and officially join the DiD adventure!

My character is a mysterious young Breton by the name of Sarah. She woke up sitting on the back of a horse-drawn wagon and has no memory of who she is, where she came from, or how she got there. She knows only her name... Sarah.

Her adventure in Skyrim began last night, after many re-rolls and restarts in the attempt to perfect her appearance, which I've finally done. The first chapter of her story was an interesting one indeed, as when the chapter began she had just awoken and for some reason was ordered to be executed by the Imperials, despite having no ties, alleged or otherwise, to the rebels and thieves she was riding with on the wagon. When last night's chapter concluded she had discovered some of her abilities, as well as an affinity for magic and smithing, and had recovered important artifacts from Bleak Falls Barrow, encountering a strange and mysterious monument at the heart of the ruins. She could feel the monument calling out to her, the same way that
Spoiler
the mysterious dragon had called out to her when it attacked Helgen and saved her mere seconds before the headsman's axe would have been brought down on her head.
Being drawn towards it, she approached it and felt a strange surge within her very soul as some of the strange markings on the monument became intelligible and formed into a word she could clearly understand -- Fus!

Now she is relaxing at the Sleeping Giant Inn while I widdle my day away at work, Level 7. She learned a lot yesterday and learned a good lesson about using caution during combat as she was brought to roughly 1/3 of her health when she was pinned against a column by the first group of Draugr she encountered in the barrow. Quickly grabbing a potion that she kept handy and available in her belt, she healed and dispatched her assailants, learning the values of the lesson they had taught her. She also learned the value of using Alchemy as a tradeskill to earn some much needed coin, as she found that upon returning the Golden Claw to the trader in Riverwood, he was all to happy to purchase the potions she had brewed while learning the first step of the trade.

Tonight she will finish her business in Riverwood and return to Whiterun, where she will turn in the artifact she was tasked to find. She will try to learn the secret behind the Mystery of Bleak Falls Barrow and try to find her place in this strange new world. She feels compelled to help those in need and despite being a Breton, has a natural talent with Blades, Shields, and Heavy Armor. She also has a gift for Restoration, partly fueled by her Breton blood, and when she thinks about the role she's meant to play in this world, one single, mysterious word pops into her mind...

Paladin!

Tonight will be very fulfilling indeed...

So here's a question for you guys -- how do you feel about potions during your DiD playthrough? I know, "There is only ONE rule..." :D But do you feel cheap when quaffing them during a fight? I try to RP it by saying she keeps them handy on her belt for easy access and she knows how to chug. Also, since there are some abilities and perks that slow down time in this game, I guess she's naturally able to slow down time while grabbing her pots. But how do YOU guys feel about using them? Is there any "official" DiD stance about them?

I'm playing on Adept. I enjoy having occasional challenges and good epic fights but want to feel uber-powerful and god-like eventually, and of course, don't want to always be at risk of dying during fights. I plan on trying out this mysterious "Overpowered trifecta of Smithing, Enchanting, and Alchemy" as I want to see what the hype is about. The bit I've played through the story so far before restarting, I've had a difficult time with a lot of fights, even though it's on Adept. I want to know what being truly Overpowered is like... lol. Especially with Sarah.

Other than that, she likes her little Wolf companion that she started the game with (Familiar) and in addition to the Paladin skills and Tradeskills, will likely delve into Conjuration (NO NECROMANCY!!! lol) and also Archery as she enjoys the bow as her ranged defense mechanism.

So these will be the main skills that I work on and try to max -- One-Handed, Block, Heavy Armor, Restoration, Smithing, Enchanting, Alchemy, and if possible Archery and Conjuration and MAYBE Two-Handed if skills allow.... I certainly enjoy stick and a board (one-handed with shield) more than 2H combat.

So that's my story! Looking forward to your input. :)

I don't have any time at all at the moment (and when I have, I want to play, not write  ). So just a short update on Deidranna: She just arrived in Solitude to do the dirty work for the blades. She is now lvl30, with conjuration over 80, heavy armor at 56, 1h at around 70, block around 40 and Enchantig around 50. Although she can handle most dangers the harsh country is throwing at her, there still are tense moments, though dragons are a bit of a joke right now.
She is doing fine, always looking for work and dark secrets to explore, eager to get more power as she ventures on (she is quite mad, and not the good kind of mad). She is looking for a follower worthy of her presence, but most people she met are just weak and would jsut stand in her way. She can't have some weakling with her who cares about moral boundaries. Anyways, she met a talking dog, possessed by a daedric spirit. Kinda cool and she wants to keep him (even though this annoying [censored] ALWAYS stands in the way and pushes her into traps...).
Her search for daedric artefacts goes slower than she wishes to, but she has some leads.

I know I said I try to keep track of the fallen characters here, but at the moment I don't see me keeping this thread alive. I will see how it looks when we reach page 10 again...

G-Pain has fallen.

I thought I was invincible, I had 100% block rating with gear and over 500 HP.

Died to 2 Dragons, 1 bear, 3 Hired thugs and 5 Bandits!! A deserved death indeed. I was fighting the bandits at first, after seeing a camp, then a dragon happens by so I start to move around a lot more, which attracted the cave bear, the hired thugs appeared and then the second dragon.
I simply ran out of health pots, and when you're getting attacked from every side, my block rating became useless.

Name: G-Pain of the Alik'r the Racist Redguar
Level: 32
Race: Redguard
six: Male
Born: 4E 160
Died: 20th of Last Seed, 4E 201
Cause of Death: 11 Enemies including 2 dragons was simply too much for the scimitar wielding lunatic. Overwhelmed southwest of Solitude.

Interesting facts: Arrested 21 times, escaped 3 times, 10 dragon souls absorbed, explorer achievement gained, and 27 dungeons cleared. All while wearing the Alik'r Hood.

If you want to do this for fun, then go ahead.

But I can't see the appeal at all, it feels like your turning the game into a chore...

For example, sometimes I like to save, then kill everyone in a town just for the combat. Or throw myself of a massive building, for the death.

Just seems a bit dull to play the game like this.

Actually this sounds like a better way to play. You have to be very careful and chose your fights wisely. Knowing you can just "load a save" seems to be the dull way.

I'm going to give it a go.

Magnus the flame Mage met his end in an unpredicted way just like my first two mages. After clearing bleak barrow and killing the dragon at the west watch tower, Magnus enrolled in the school of magic and was well on his way to better understanding his destructive powers. After his first class he decided to head to the local tavern to relax before heading to a archeological dig site for more instruction. While at the tavern, he decided to try intimidating a drunk into paying for his tab. I'm sure he would have been an easy kill had I hit him with my flame blast instead of half the patrons in the tavern and the inn keeper. Needless to say, the guards made quick work of my crazy mage who was setting everything on fire except the stumbling drunk. I guess Magnus should have taken target practice 101 before trying out his newfound skills :) No wonder the locals can't stand the nearby school of magic!

RIP
Magnus the Mage
Born: unknown
Died: unknown
Cause of death: sword blows from local guards in hopes of keeping Magnus from burning down a local inn, customers, the inn keep, and himself.

New character:

Going to give the Mage specializing in destruction another go at expert diff with special care given to aiming ranged spells :)

First of all thanks to all of you keeping this thread alive...!

I'm on my second character and loving it.

My Imperial Hero Duc met a glorious ideath after fighting a dragon outside a fort south of Windhelm, atleast he thought so....

Actually the dragon killed all the bandits outside and Duc only had to stay in hiding during the assault, like a real Hero, then finishing off the dragon was piece of cake!

Feeling strong and Herolike... Duc even thought it was time to change to expert in the settings... Instead he headed inside, he cleared every room without trouble, then headed to the prison where he got attacked from behind by a crazy man with a enchanted two-handed axe. Duc almost immediatly fell into shock and forgot that he spoke the language of dragons which actually would have saved him. One hit later he was no more...!

Duc will be remembered and greatly missed.

13 levels old a specialist in blocking and one handed combat, he was a sweet talker, a ladys man died by his own stupidity.

Now it's time for Zii the Orc... to be continued.

I want to suggest to you DID heroes the "no kill moves" mod, because when your enemy can take, whatever hp you have left, with one strike/powerstrike, the finish animation will kick in, robbing you of opportunity to block or use healing potions, before a normal attack would have landed on you. this is especially true against twohanders, because they strike hard but are easy to block. How many of you were killed by bandit chiefs with twohanders, with the feeling it was not completely fair? I have lost at least three characters to it, but no more with no kill moves.

So after a long time intrigued at the prospect of this playstyle I have begun a DID playthough, introducing:

R'Jasta The Mange Ridden
Race:Khajiit
six:Male
Born:4E150
Class:Filthy Beggar Berserker

After year on year of petty thievery, beggary and brigandry across Tamriel along with countless jail terms and humiliation both at the hands of the authorities and of his fellow bandits R'Jasta had decided to leave behind his life of crime to find a new life in Skyrim as well as a doctor who may perhaps have some more luck in curing him of his rather disgusting mange which has plagued him his entire life. Just his luck that in one day he would be caught trying to steal a steed (again), wrongly accused of treason, almost executed and then practically burnt alive by a dragon with a mean streak. However even after all the adversity he managed to escape the darkness of Helgen and proceeded to Riverwood where he robbed some decent clothes from Hod and Gerdur and then got wasted with Embry the town drunk before passing out in Gerdur's bed. Needless to say the next morning was somewhat awkward. All things said and done he was glad to be alive albeit still horrifically disfigured by his mange and was ready to make his way into Skyrim for as long as fate would decree him to live (Which likely won't be long!)

Notes on R'Jasta: A filthy mange-ridden Khajiit who's lived a life of petty brigandry, cannot read to save his life, will join any cause if the gold's good and the blood and mead are flowing, favours any two-handed weapon or failing that his claws...oh and he doesn't wear shoes, he HATES shoes and boots they give him terrible claw ache!
