So Americanised it's based in and on some of their most iconic cities
Indeed. Still made in Britain though (see, you're Britain when we like you and Scotland when we don't).

What, you don't like Real Kardashian Housewives of Jersey Shore?

I sort of look at it as the American TV networks realizing that they can make more money airing a zillion bad TV shows over more channels than they can airing quality programming over less air. I mean, just look at the number of basic cable channels the average provider carries and the percentage of time those channels spend airing low-rent, low-risk reality shows.

There's also no accounting for taste. There are a lot of people here. Shows that I think are terrible might be someone else's favorite shows. Some people never seem to tire of seeing different characters play out the same sit-com plots over and over again. When you have that large an audience it probably starts to become profitable to cater to more separate demographics. And again, on the volume subject, I've watched quite a lot more UK television that the average American, and it isn't as though they're all winners either.

As far as re-makes go...that seems obvious to me. Take a formula that has already been tested on an audience in another country and change it so that people in another find it easier for them to relate to/digest. Many Americans aren't as accustomed to consuming media from other cultures as people from, say, Europe (who are exposed to neighboring cultures more often) are. I mean, unless you count Canada.

In other words, this.

Oh I know this too well lol - Andy Murray is a prime example;
The Scot, Andy Murray, has yet another Grand Slam in a poor show of performance
The UK 4th best tennis player in the world, Andy Murray, has just won his first Grand Slam

Peep Show, Extras and The Inbetweeners are the best of recent years IMO.

Shameless, Little Britain, Extras, Episodes (is Episodes British? It has some good British humour, at any rate).

What are England's top exports? I've often wondered this since Scotland has Whisky, haggis, tradional kilts, fudge/tablet and oil amoung a few.

Little Britain
I don't think anyone over here likes Little Britain. Not after the first couple of episodes, anyway.

No? I got the impression it was big there. I see the creators on a lot of UK talk shows. It's not my kind of thing, but everyone else seems to like it.

It was very popular for a time, but the fact that they repeated the same 4 or 5 sketches again and again means it got boring pretty fast. The creators are still famous because they've gone to do other stuff, really.

Well yeah, that makes sense, but it very rarely seems to go in the opposite direction - I can't think of a single British show based on an American one off the top of my head.

There's been a few: many are not very successful, but some have become pretty well-known. Except to me since I don't watch much telly.

I wanted to say "cheese" as a random Sheogorath-inspired comedy word but actually English cheeses are making quite a name for themselves, apparently. But apart from that, I'm not sure we actually make anything any more.

I hope it still does. I still think it's rather sad that the once thriving shipbuilding industry on Tyneside is now in the past, as well as pretty much everything else.

(Tyneside being Liverpool or Newcastle?)
I'm sure Liverpool used to have a booming shipping industry in the last few decades but that's since tried up and became the *midden that is modern Liverpool.

*From what I have seen it is a midden of a city, try not to take offence

I'm from Newcastle so I won't take offence; Turns might have a different opinion on the matter, though. :hehe:

Well I did buy parsnip crisps imported from England last month, if that counts.
I find most of our tv is garbage.
Kinda like French tv then. Imagine American tv shows dubbed in French, reality shows adapted from original American shows, and crappy original shows made with public funding and you have French tv in all its glory.

WASH YOUR MOUTH OUT BOY!

Liverpool is on the Mersey. The Tyne is on the other side of the country.

Modern Liverpool is a bit daft looking though. It has many old Victorian buildings, and people keep coming and building huge blue glass boxes everywhere.

Also known amongst the scousers as "Paddy's Wigwam"

I've sat exams in its crypt. :ermm:

I've seen a few interesting French shows. The one that springs most to mind is Clara Sheller. The first season wasn't bad. [Edit: you need to understand the disappointment. It was good. It was funny and quite charming.] And then all of the characters were recast with prettier, less talented people... Which is when I stopped watching.

To anyone from anywhere: How much of your own country have you seen?

I got this idea from the posts of the Brits here. It doesn't seem like you guys wander around your island very much. I could be wrong - just a general impression. In fact, prove me wrong.

I've seen the neighbour's house and the local shop. I also saw Scotland. It had biting flies, so I went away again.

I have visited every province, all of the big cities, many of the smaller towns, many of the mountains and beaches and forests and rivers... This place is beautiful, so of course I'll want to see it all. :D The vastness and diversity of, well, just about everything, are the main reasons I'm here.
