The Unofficial Fallout New Vegas Distraction Thread

Post » Mon Jan 10, 2011 1:08 pm

It's still couple of weeks until launch date. I'm just curious to know what have to been doing to take the "edge" off the anticipation for FONV?

At first I revisited FO3, finally scooping up all the trophies/achievements I missed and building a "maxed stats" character. I've easily spent over 1000 hours on that game, but I've been laying off FO3 for the past month or so so FONV will feel "fresh" when I eventually play it.

I also re-started my GTA IV game. Only got as far as the bank heist mission, then they retroactively added Trophy support for the PS3 so I quit the game with the intention to replay it, and then FO3 came along and I shelved it. I'm almost back to the point where I left off, but I wound up yet getting another game...

So now I'm playing Dead Rising 2 for the PS3. I pre-ordered it through Gamestop to get the Ninja outfit bonus and it arrived late last week. For the most part the storyline is linear and all the missions are time based and there are quite a few tough "boss" type characters called psychopaths, non-zombie characters that have either gone crazy or are capitalizing and thriving on the chaos of the zombie outbreak.

The good part is that you can restart the game from a save which will carry over your characters progress into the next game, so the first time that you play you can totally ignore the main missions and just level grind your character by killing zombies and rescuing survivors and once the time runs out you can start on a new game and carry over your skills. You can also combine average weapons (about 50 or so weapon combos in the game) like a regular baseball bat and some nails and build a spiked bat, which will let you build more experience (called "Prestige Points" in the game) so you can level up faster and kill zombies a lot more gratuitously. :P

The ability to ignore the main quest allows the player to have a pseudo "free roam" where you can engage in some mindless zombie slaying fun... :flamethrower::shocking:

It's enough of a distraction for me that I'm no longer suffering from all of the FONV anticipation and I can patiently wait for the FONV launch on 10/19.

Does anyone else have an equally good FONV distraction that you would like to share with the rest of us?

well......... work and Girlfriend are my biggest distractions.... can't afford to buy anymore games, but if Dead rising 2 is anything like dead rising 1 and dead rising: Case zero then i'm sure it will be a brilliant way to kill time.

Yep, Dead Rising 2 is much like Case Zero and to a slightly lesser extent Dead Rising.

Hrm as to how I'm distracting myself from the upcomming New Vegas, Purgatory aka Work, devouring a plethora of books again, enduring the guff on the gogglebox.

Dead Space, Borderlands, Left 4 Dead and I just got Wasteland #1-25 so I'm going to read that too.
I got lots to do before Vegas comes around knocking. :P

No I don't have a distraction, I stay up all night waiting for it. Theres nothing good on TV ever so around my house gets boring fast. I have been playing alot of fallout 3 but the anticipation is too great so i switched to Gears of War 2 "Horde Mode".

I think i might pick up an instrument. (drums, guitar or keyboard) i've yet to decide which though. :mohawk:

I cant afford anything at the moment so new things are out of the question. Ill stick with bad company and rock band up until FO:NV.

Mafia 2 was kind of disappointment (great atmosphere and story, but gameplay wise - GTA clone, but more linear). So, Just Cause 2 and Arkham Asylum are my distraction until October 19.

That's a shame, i've got good memories of the original Mafia game. I'll probably rent Mafia 2 at some stage, just to see what its like for myself.

It's good in terms of story and 40's / 50's atmosphere and music. But it's way to linear and short for a sandbox game. After you beat main story in 10 hours, there is nothing more to do in the game. Gameplay wise, if you've played any Rockstar game, you've already seen everything. Drive from A to B, kill some mobster, escape from police. That's mostly it.

Oh things like work, family, that sort of thing. However I decided to try a little x3 for a bit. Gotta be careful though, I might need to bank some time with the wife and all, for when NV is out!

I'm going to try King's Bounty, something completely different, to keep my mind off Fallout.

I have a few rentals to keep me busy. Dead Space, Final Fantasy XIII, and MLB 10: The Show. My free-trial with Blockbuster runs out on the 17th, so these games will pretty much lead me right into the release of New Vegas.

I played some starcraft 2 multiplayer today. A couple of games made me so angry that I wished New Vegas was already here. (I'm in Diamond league and playing zerg. Yeah... Rageeeeee) Then I played Planescape Torment for a bit, got it on gog.com yesterday. Great rpg to revisit even today.

Playing Fallout 3, Left 4 Dead and a bit of Warcraft 3. I was planning on getting ArcaniA: Gothic 4 but the demo was absolutely terrible.

Just picked up Left 4 Dead 2 on Steam for $7, so probably some of that. Mostly work and going out with friends, though.

Ugh...I hadn't had one of those since I was a kid and I ate one recently. Disgusting! They taste like a giant frosted cracker filled with jam that's been sitting out in the open drying up for a few weeks. :P

Thats why you microwave 'em (freeze in the case of the Hot Fudge Sundae and Strawberry Milkshake flavors).

Anyway, I've been playing a lot of Just Cause 2 and FarCry 2. Hard to keep my mind off New Vegas when it's now less than two weeks away :celebration:

Every time I see someone wearing a Hollister T-shirt with the California flag on it, I'm always suprised that the bear only has one head. That's how distracted I am.
