I think I prefer Oblivion's Stamina system.

Limited stamina works perfectly fine. Instead of having your stamina bar going down to 0 in a second, ala Skyrim when doing power-attacks, it would be a much bigger pool to begin with.
Hence the three split bar approach I mentioned. Typically your damage side would be quite resourceful, and less so on the regen side. You could drink potions to boost stamina regen and regen speed, or take a snack to raise it for a limited time. But using from this pool takes away from the damage pool. And how much depends on build and other factors. Diseases and reduced health would also contribute to lowering your damage side of stamina - think about it; how well do you perform when you're unhealthy or sick?

So as you do things that require stamina, you're able to regain most, while a tiny fraction goes into the damage side. The damage side of the bars should only be possible to fix through a combination of rest and eat (where quality thereof actually matters), but not required so often as to totally ruining the gameplay. If you choose to ignore it, you take the penalty by having little reserves to work from.

All the "cheap effect" like spells and potions, only work on the regen side of the bars, and it's completely up to the player how he wants to manage his reserves, which pretty much drain constantly at varying speeds depending on usage and circumstances. Low on stamina reserves? Gulp down potions for a quick "energy drink" (pretty much as in real life), but it has limited effect wrt time, and to regain fully you need to take more planned actions like resting.

So even if your stamina regains quickly after a power attack, if you're well rested beforehand, you may be able to deal out 20 power attacks instead of only 3 before falling under the required amount needed for the attack.

Oblivion's stamina system was more realistic; regular attacks costed Stamina; when your Stamina was low, your attacks did a lot less damage; when you run, your stamina regen goes way down; jumping costed stamina; I could go on and on. Heck, Morrowind's was even more realistic than that, stamina decreased while running.

The one thing I do appreciate about Skyrim's stamina system is the ability to sprint, but I'm disheartened that such a great series has gone to the mindless munchkin noobs of gaming.

eh its not super different. your attacks still do less dmg afaik, when you run (sprint) your stamina goes way down... jumping.. seems irrelevant really.

Why do you agree running and jumping should cost stamina? Sprinting already does, if running did as well then you would have to walk around in combat if you wanted decent stamina regen, it's a silly mechanic for combat, which is why it isn't in the game any more, also due to the design of some dungeons not being able to jump when you need would just get you trapped by the enemy constantly, also not good.
Its more realistic, and i like my elder scrolls games to be as realistic as possible. Though now that i think it, stamina drain while running could be pretty stupid when sprinting also drains stamina.

That's just realism for realism's sake, it's not a good way to design a game even if it sounds like what you want, you would tire of it very very quickly I promise..

Calling members who don't agree with your view "mindless" or "mindless munchkins" either one is cause for warning and cause for thread closure. Not to mention this is the wrong section for comparing TES games and there are threads open in the TES Series section for comparisons. I didn't notice your rude judgmental Op before but this is now closed for good.
