This is the state of media. Do you see a problem?

Wasn't sure if The Sun was a gossip rag about celebrities or the other one with naked women...

I back this wholeheartedly. Most media outlets are force-fed and regurgitate distorted information gruel. No thank you.

So as rocky as the internet can be, it really is the best place to obtain the knowledge savvy you yearn for. This is how I feel anyway, others may disagree.
Yea for sure. FOX news is one of the worst, most bias news stations on TV I've ever seen. So is some of NBC news. So the internet is where I get most news.

I really don't care about the state of the media, and I don't care who owns what or whatever as long as I get to watch TV, listen to the radio, reading the newspaper et cetera...

Yeah I agree it really means nothing to me as well

So?

Does it really matter all that much?

It's just basic capitalism, calm down man.

Agreed.

Well, to be fair, they do provide http://news.sky.com/sky-news/content/StaticFile/jpg/2009/Aug/Week1/15356707.jpg exciting news.

Same reaction here (but it also made me laugh). This is not news, in my opinion it's entertainment for repressed voyeurs (like reality shows).

British papers are terrible. :yuck:

Who is up for another Daily Express crusade?

:ermm: It's sad but that pretty much is why I don't read papers or watch television. Well I still watch some television... Midsomer is a real place to me.

It's more than a bit generous calling the Times Comic Supplement a "Newspaper" then again... All those companies. All that money. They still manage to churn out such a large quantity of crap.

Is it a problem? Depends how much you like lowest common denominator crap really.

Shadow.... B...b..b...but Midsomer is REAL!! It has to be! Barnaby is too cuddly to not be real!

Well to be honest newspapers elsewhere in the world aren't much better, for instance media collusion with politicians is much worse here in France than in the UK. France ranks lower than the UK on the press freedom index. And we have a similar situation than the one in the US as described in the OP's graphs, a few groups own a majority of newspapers. So yeah, nothing to be proud of.

I wonder what countries like Finland, Norway, Estonia and the Netherlands do to be at the top of the press freedom index, must be nice to be able to trust journalists more than the ones we have here.

I wanna take Barnaby home! :hugs: 'Your my father now!' I would say with a knife in hand... hmm, I think that makes me sound a bit mental. I take that back. :ermm:

I think the purpose is to stir out crap. People must love it, otherwise I don't understand how they can consitently sell such rubbish.

It's a good thing I use the internet for the majority of my entertainment needs.

Also, I had never even heard of the song Mrs. Robinson until that picture and it was pretty good but I found I was never really able to get into much of Simon and Garfunkel's music anyway.

I didn't say that, and I'm baffled as to how you could've drawn that conclusion...

Know something? You're absolutely right. It was mindbogglingly stupid of me and I'm not sure why I did it in retrospect. Possibly too many YouTube arguments have lead me to be needlessly suspicious of any comments that could remotely be considered in favor of a certain political movement. Sorry bout that. :(

I see a lot of people saying they use the internet for their news, and on the internet they choose what they want to see and the such.

But unless you go out of your way to get around it (which I'm assuming most don't), you're gonna run into http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Filter_bubble.

Internet's great and all, but don't think it's this magical beacon of untainted being in the world.

Edit: Personally, if I watch the news, I watch some MSNBC, some CNN, some FOX [admittedly somewhat for the comedy of insane people]; at the end of the day a collective of potentially flawed reports is better than a singular potentially flawed report.

Edit2: Besides, news shows aren't actually purely for the news; they're actually quite like your internet escapades where they cater to certain ideals in the reports and personalities they show. Pure news would simply be too boring for 99% of the population to watch.

Not if you have an inkling about the reputable sites and don't just google vague things at random.

Or people could do their own research on facts and forget about biased reports entirely.

And how do you guarantee your sources for researching aren't biased?

By finding citations and not immediately believing everything that's written.

Every little bit helps, but I don't think recycling will save the media.

Not me. It'd be nice if everyone did their own independent research, but that's not the case.

You realize that it's unreasonable to expect everyone to go out and get their own research, right? That's the entire point of the goddamned news. The only difference is that stations likes MSNBC and FOX cater their news to a specific audience. I.E. what is likely to matter to them.
If you're not that audience, then don't pay it any mind.

Similarly, one would be foolish if they took everything they heard for granted. News sources are considered relatively credible because they're usually not wrong. Obviously not always, they're run by human beings.

Edit: Or do you want the "Everyone but you is stupid as a sack of potatoes, and needs to be spoon-fed concentrated information that is controlled so that they hear nothing more than it, so you should hurry up and start a revolution to save this oafs from themselves and the big bad big brother?" shtick?

It's called trending content on twitter ang G+. It is completely unrelated to anything you do, but just are the big things happening on the networks.
