I had totally the same feeling when I watched Sunshine. Didn't expect much from it at all and was completely blown away. There's definitely something to be said for not reading up on films before you go and see them I think.
I saw it advertised on MTV two years ago and thought it was an MTV Production. Those are always dire. Watched it last night because I was in the mood for a popcorn celluloid... Yes, I was surprised. XD
Have you seen Moon yet? That's another great film set in space.
Moon is awesome. Also, sad.
2001 has got the best robot-taking-over story, set in the awesomely silent space, that I've ever seen. And the rest is most certainly bizarre...
Is that the movie with Matt Leblanc and Lacey Chabert? I think it was alright for the age at which I watched it, but I tried to watch it again last year and was quite disappointed. X)
I thought Sunshine, like Event Horizon, worked well at the beginning and then went all weird on the ending. They've built up this very tense, very spooky atmosphere and then blow it with corny gore and wacky camera effects.
i dunno about sunshine not seen it, but i agree with this on event horizon. the film did need some action at the end cos there wasnt any for most of it, but a psycho durassic park guy and man on fire was a little disappointing. oh well its a good film overall.
Yeah, it is corny. (Also, the dialogue. While the first guy is dying a probably extremely painful death, the psychologist is going, "What do you see? What do you see?!" Really, dude?) I think it's an effective set-up, though. Give people goosebumps and then whack them with the gore. I can yawn through all the
Saws,
Hostels and
The Hills Have Eyes in the world, but set it up properly, the way movies like
Event Horizon and
Sunshine do, and I'm totally mindwhacked when the violence does come.
