thoughts on Fallout: Equestria

Post » Tue May 15, 2012 2:27 am

for those who have read Fallout: Equestria (for those who haven't, go read it, be warned, it's longer than war & peace), what are your thoughts on it? (besides the fact that it's ponies)
how does it compare to the game universe? (I've played some of fallout 1, am playing FO:NV, and would be playing fallout 3 if it worked)
Is it more grimdark then the games? (tvtropes says it's 'Fallout 3 with happy fun elements of 1984')
thoughts?

Actually it's a really good fan-fic, extremely long. I'd ask for you not to assume the worst just because it has ties with My Little Pony. Not to mention that it is quite Grimdark.

I'm on chapter 16 currently, I don't have much time to read, but it certainly has been one of my favorite books (I don't consider it a fic, it's a book)

Cute, innocent characters in a harsh, unforgiving world i assume? Interesting combination.

not to mention it also has inspired 30+ spin-offs of itself, one of which, Project Horizons, is longer the the original (plus it's only 2/3's of the way done) and is even more grimdark (it's THE most grimdark story I've ever read, and that's coming from a fan of warhammer 40k)

nope, it's been 200 years since the megaspells (read nukes) fell, and the population of the Equestrian Wasteland are just as grim as the occupants of the games (just turn everyone in the games into a pony and you're doing it right), plus during the war it was all 1984-ish, so the cute and innocent ones are long gone (most likely from a bullet to the skull) or they don't last long

Okay, this sounds like a completely hilarious concept, and even if it is told completely straight - neigh! (Heh) - especially if it is told completely straight, I'd probably laugh my ass off at the insanity of it all.

I went into Fallout: Equestria knowing nothing about Fallout, so I was kinda in the dark for a good portion of the story, I guess for someone who's played Fallout, the concept would be hilarious, and yes the story is told completely straight, there are some references to the show, but it's more 'fallout with ponies' rather then a crossover with the show itself, as a fallout fan, you would probably be less in the dark, then I was as a MLP fan

This should probably be in the MLP thread.

I've read the original and Project Horizons, and read part of Pink Eyes but gave up because it sort of svcks.

The original sticks pretty close to FO3's story, just with everything ponified. There's plenty of original elements that aren't touched upon in the game to my knowledge (the elements of pre-war politics like the ministries, and of course all the magic). There's also plenty added in that doesn't quite match up to the game. I could be wrong, but I don't think there's a game equivalent to Canterlot and the pink cloud.

I'd actually say it's more grimdark than the game. Just because the rendered environmental gore in the game is fairly limited compared to what you can create in a story. The most you get from the game's raiders are some dismembered corpses and bloody bones.

Okay, this sounds like a completely hilarious concept, and even if it is told completely straight - neigh! (Heh) - especially if it is told completely straight, I'd probably laugh my ass off at the insanity of it all.
Regardless of how much you hate ponies, you'd have to be a pretty disturbed individual to laugh through 600,000 words of [censored], murder, torture, and death. I think you're underestimated exactly how grimdark it is

And Project Horizons is arguably worse for that. There's a very disturbing few scenes, one that was so bad the author gave a warning and provided a link to skip it (I didn't, it wasn't that bad but it wasn't censored).

It's not that I hate ponies, it's just that it's such an utterly absurd concept that, no matter how grimdark it may be, all I could think of is playing Fallout 3 as a Pony.

i try to avoid fanfics in general if only because of Sturgeon's Law (99% of everything is crap). Of course then I tend to avoid most anything due to that.

Don't get to mad, but its sorta happened http://www.fanfiction.net/s/6899006/1/Dungeons_Dragons_and_a_Little_Friendship as far as I http://www.equestriadaily.com/2011/02/story-ponies-play-d.html.

On the topic at hand, prolly shoulda put this in the main FiM thread. That aside, FO:E is one of the few good fanfics spawned by the brony fandom (See Sturgeons Law) and has spawned multitudes of spinoffs, of which I can only think of 2 worth reading. The fic itself gave me the same bit of skeptisism I had when I first watched the show itself, but it's one of those things that, if given a chance, will suprise you.

"Ponies play D&D" and "Dungeons, Dragons, and a Little Friendship."
Also a webcomic, http://friendshipisdragons.thecomicseries.com/comics/first/, and a custom roleplaying ruleset called Roleplaying is Magic, and probably a lot more :bonk:
