So many people saying Australia. Heehee, go us.

My list: Russia, Northern Ireland, The United States (So much patriotism, it's cool to see), Japan, because I spent too many years attempting to learn the e language that I might as well & Germany rounds the list out (where my family is from)

May I ask why ? I live here, maybe its different up north, maybe I am just surrounded by horrible places. But its not a great place.

Northern wales has lovely scenery, but the food and culture is just as bad as the south. :P And probably as much as most of England is as well.

I would like to visit:

Germany
India
China
Russia
Somewhere in the USA that isn't frigging Orlando...

Yeah UK food in general is bad. Italian food is best imo.

Why visit some of those places ?

China has an insane government, and poverty.
India has even worse poverty.
Russia has lots of neo nazis apparently.

Scotland's lovely, it has some of the most wonderful scenery I've ever seen, the towns are interesting and the people are friendly. But I know how easy it is to take for granted the stuff you're interested in: "there's nothing of interest in Oxfordshire", as I've been known to think. Apparently a few people disagree for some reason I can't quite fathom!

You can find good food and bad food (almost) everywhere. I'd contend that the bad reputation of British food is largely undeserved; whereas it's surprisingly easy to find terrible food in places that are renowned for good eating.

To anyone visiting Finland: focus your trip on going to Lapland in Summer... There is nothing to see in the South you don't see in any Western European city/town/village.

Lapland in summer is just epic. Lots of national parks, untouched nature, wildlife, and peace.

British food ranges from bland and tasteless, to "I think im going to be sick". The fact there are so many takeaways tells me most people dont care about british food, and would rather eat the crap they serve.

Absolutely not. The first night I was back from New York, I went for a good British pub meal. Being Burns' Night and the Chinese New Year, I had a creamy haggis soup, followed by haggis bonbons, then a haggis spring roll in a plum sauce, then the classic haggis, neeps and tatties. Finished off with the quintessentially British sticky toffee pudding (a dessert second only to a good cranachan), all accompanied by a pint of Belhaven Best (due to the bar not having any John Smiths). Never have I been so delighted to revel in great British food.

Because that is a VERY narrow minded view of the world. It's like saying:

Why visit the UK? It's a haven of chavs.
Why visit the US? It's full of rednecks and gangs.
Why visit Italy? There's the mafia man!

All of the countries you quoted have beautiful places. There's a difference between living in a country, and visiting a country on holiday. Anyway, my list:

-The UK
-China

..and a bunch of other countries, but those two are at the top.

Only an insane government will effect a country more than a few chavs, and lots of people living in poverty is something I doubt people want to see, and there is plenty of poverty.

Also by visiting china your supporting their economy, helping their government. Its funny people complain about China then do business with them.

I don't know who complains about China. I sure don't. They're quickly becoming a superpower.

China is beautiful. I don't agree with a lot of policies, but I wouldn't visit a country to get tangled in its political affairs.

I'm not even sure what to say in response to that: it runs so contrary to my own experiences (and I dare say common sense) that I find such a claim to be bizarre in the extreme.

May you give us some examples of their racism, please?

I can give examples after work but its mostly just verbal hot air. But one example would be the people who cheated Polish workers on getting minimum legal wages here because it was easy and convenient for them to lie to foreigners that simply didnt understand or know Icelandic laws better.

Well, no. British food really did used to be horrible. It's reformed itself in the past two decades, but before that it really just ranged from bland to horrible.

Only an insane government will effect a country more than a few chavs, and lots of people living in poverty is something I doubt people want to see, and there is plenty of poverty.

You'd be wrong. Many places in Africa and South America, for instance, have tours through their shanty towns. It's a bit like an automated, vehicular-ised zoo visit. You'd be surprised how much tourists like to gawk at those less fortunate than themselves. It's quite disgusting behaviour, and I'm appalled that tourists anywhere actually engage in it. And yet this practice brings in money, so the locals swallow their pride.

Also by visiting china your supporting their economy, helping their government. Its funny people complain about China then do business with them.

I agree with TESFanner. Also, Ratslayer, just because you don't agree with their policies, doesn't mean they aren't the right ones. *Twilight Zone music*

Anyway, oops, forgot my 5 picks:
1. Japan
2. France, check
3. Tibet
4. China
5. Brazil, check

People in general take food more seriously now, but I think it's inaccurate to say "it ranged from bland to horrible": that certainly isn't my memory of how food was over 20 years ago. What has changed in the past 20 years is the availability of decent sandwiches: with a few notable exceptions, it was very hard to find a decent sandwich in the UK prior to the explosion of sandwich and coffee emporia in the early-mid '90s. I still have bad memories of things like ham sandwiches made with soggy bread, margarine and a microscopically thin slice of pink, vaguely ham-like plastic. If you were lucky there'd be a piece of wilted lettuce rapidly going brown and a squishy tomato in there too: if that was a person's only experience of British food I can see them being nonplussed, but things like good Sunday roasts, stews, cheeses, puddings and fast-food such as fish and chips certainly go back way further than 20 years. Sure, it was also easy enough to find unpleasant specimens of said foods, but the same applies anywhere.

I still think it's rather sad that NZ is now synonymous with Middle Earth considering it was supposed to be a sort of "English epic". :(
