Unofficial "Will My PC Run Skyrim" Thread #61 w hard

Post » Sat Dec 29, 2012 1:53 pm

Since the PS3 is having major issues with Skyrim, I′ve decided to start a new playthrough on the PC version.
I know this question has been asked hundreds of times before, but I couldn′t manage to find a topic with the exact PC setup as me. According to my own knowledge, these system specs should manage 1920 x 1080 res with ultra graphics:

- 4GB RAM
- AMD Phenom II x4 955 processor (4 CPUs), ~3.2GHz
- Windows 7 64 bit
- NVIDIA GeForce GTX 260, 2660MB (2.6GB) 1920 x 1080

Since I don't want this topic to turn into a 5 page discussion, I would appreciate if only people with knowledge would respond. Someone who really knows how good it will run and not someone who ''might think'' etc..

In order to give you an adequate answer, please post a full dxdiag in a spoiler tag. I know for a fact the GTX 260 does not exist in a 2.5 GB configuration.
Actually this is copy/pasted from my Dxdiag

Please post the full dxdiag in a spoiler tag. What you posted is next to useless.

In the corner, click save. Open the resulting file and copy the entire contents of the file into a spoiler tag.

Yes, but it was necessary to see some details like the exact model of some of the components.

In any case, it's similar to what I run save for the CPU and I do fine on high.

Also, update your drivers for your video card.

Will this build play Skyrim on "ok" settings?

Intel Core(3rd Gen) i5-3450 3.1GHz
6GB DDR3 @ 1600MHz
Nvidia GeForce GT620

I can also OC the CPU to 3.5GHz if need be.

You need a gaming class GPU, not merely a business, or "Entry" class video solution to get above the bare minimum, at low screen resolutions.

Do you have any suggustions for replacements? The recommended part for my PC is the ATI VisionTek Radeon HD4650 1GB, but that is still pretty low...

BTW, the basic specs are:

Dell Vostro 470E (enhanced)
3rd Gen Intel Core i5-3450 3.1GHz with TurboBoost 2.0 to 3.5GHz
6GB DDR3 1600MHz non-ECC(upgradable to 32GB)
GeForce GT620
500GB SATA HD @7200RPM
Windows 7 Professional 64-bit

My budget is around 300$ for the GPU or other upgrade suggestions.

Thanks for the help!

Among current cards, the GTX 660 will soon be available, or you can consider the HD 7750. You don't want any Geforce less capable than a "50" level, and "60" is much better (both GTXes). For Radeons, you don't want cards less powerful than "670" level (6670, 7670), but "750" is much better.

Actually it's better with 2x ''lower'' graphics card, like 2x 460 or something. What's best? 2 avarage strong people working or 1 very strong? ;)

1 very strong. Always pick the most powerfull card you can afford and avoid sli/crossfire if you can help it to avoid further issues.

What settings could I play Skyrim at? Is there a realistic possibility (With a decent 40-60fps) of using high-res texture packs?
  • EVGA GeForce GTX570
  • Intel i5 Sandy Bridge 2500k at 3.3GHz (Maybe willing to OC)
  • 16GB ram

Idk if the second tag is TMI but if you need it it's their... thank you. As I am a Truck driver ( new job with hubby) I can't have a desk top but if their is a better laptop for the same price range ( $ 1,200- $1,500 us) that I can get at a major retailer....think along the best buy lines, I have to get were a semi will go. I'll look into that.

Ps...it will have to do other things like log saveing and photo editing.

Are the hard drive's performances very important for Skyrim?

The rest of my computer seems fine now, but it has two of those:
http://www.harddrivebenchmark.net/hdd.php?hdd=WDC+WD5001AALS
which give 5.9 on the "Windows Experience Index" in windows 7 pro x64, if that's worth anything (all the other components are higher than 7.0). In case it matters, there is 8Gb of RAM (hopefully it loads up in it and works from there?)

I also have a spare HDD which is a bit better:
http://www.harddrivebenchmark.net/hdd.php?hdd=Seagate+ST31000528AS
I intend on leaving windows 7 on one of the 500 Gb HDD, and installing Skyrim on the second 500 Gb HDD, but would it make a noticeable difference to put in the 1 Tb HDD and install Skyrim on that slightly better one instead?

Thanks again for the help!

I think I have most of the laptop I'm looking at down to a yes, but the video card? ( ok i'll admit I'm a dunce when it comes to this stuff) I can't find it on the list and while I googled it, i'm afraid I didn't understand half of what I read. It's a Nividia GeForce GT650m.

I picked the Asus because it had good reveiws and looked like it would work.... if not I'd really like to know. Thank you.

The 650 will run the game fine. However, you may want to look at the G55 from Asus instead. It's similar, but with a better GPU.

Anybody? Will an EVGA GTX570 1028mb run high-res texture packs with no hiccups?

Yes the 570 will run texture packs fine depending on your res as its only 1gb, it might cause "hiccups"

You'll be fine with the base game. As for texture packs, you'll just need to experiment.

And a related question: Windows 7 + Skyrim on the same HDD is slower than Windows 7 on its own HDD + Skyrim on its own HDD, everything else kept equal, right? Because they can access their resources concurrentially?
