I'm getting ready to build a machine, and I just want to make sure that it is capable of handling the game on ultra at 1080p with heavy mods installed (preferably some post processing, but I would be ok with just hd textures).

Motherboard: AsRock Z77 Extreme4
CPU: i7-3770k @ 3.5 ghz (3.9 ghz turbo)
RAM: 16 gb (2x8 gb) Corsair Vengeance Low Profile @ 1600mhz and 10-10-10-27 timings
Primary Drive: Mushkin Enhanced Cronos 90gb SSD (up to 550 MB/s)
OS: Windows 8 Pro (64 bit)
GPU: Undecided.

Essentially, my debate for the GPU is between a GeForce 650 ti, GeForce 660, and a Radeon HD 7850. How would these three cards compare when dealing with heavily modded Skyrim?

Thanks in advance !
For the OS, you may want to drop down to Windows 7 64-bit. Though, you may like 8 but my opinion is that 7 is still superior. As for the GPU, go with the 660, 660 Ti if you can afford it.

That's my opinion, anyways. The rest looks good for ultra.

In the face of some slightly lowered prices and increased budget, I am now also debating a Radeon HD 7870 (either Gigabyte or MSI Hawk version) for Skyrim. However, I feel that a 660 ti would be too expensive. Would a 7870 or a 660 run the game better at 1080p with heavy mods?

P.S. I have decided to change my OS to Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit

It has more to do with the video card than the CPU for the texture pack. What are the details on your card?

I'm a personal fan of Nvidia cards. However, the 7870 is close to the equivalent of the 660. If your budget's the big constraint, go for the 7870. :)

As to the OS change, you'll be much happier. ;)

Hope that helps both of you. :)

Laptop designs from the past 5-6 years no longer allow video upgrades, and an HD 5600 isn't much of a card when it's the mobile version; it's also getting pretty "OLD" already. Laptops go obsolete very rapidly, making them uneconomical choices as gaming platforms.

Hi,

Can anyone please advise on the following PC setup running with dual monitors? I've been holding off playing this for a while until I buy a new PC and the new one will be this spec or at least very close to it.

Corsair Carbide 300R Midi Tower Case
Intel Core i5 3570K Processor Overclocked to up to 4.7GHz
Akasa Venom Voodoo Ultra Quiet CPU Cooler
Arctic Silver 5 Thermal Paste
Asus P8Z77-V Motherboard
16GB Corsair PC3-12800 1600MHz DDR3 Memory (4 x 4GB sticks)
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 670 2048MB Graphics Card
240GB Corsair Force 3 Solid State Drive
2000GB 7200RPM Hard Disk - 6Gbps
LG Blu-Ray ROM / DVD-RW Combi Drive
Corsair CX 750W 80 PLUS Bronze Certified PSU
Onboard High Definition Audio
Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit
Standard Cable Management

£972.81 ex VAT
£1197.36 delivered inc VAT

As well as the above spec, I'll probably play Skyrim on one monitor while browsing the internet or doing other stuff on the other monitor. Will this be a problem or should I even consider running the game across both monitors instead? And does it matter whether I use full screen or windowed mode for the above?

I'm also unsure at the moment whether to go with Windows 8 or stick to tried and test Windows 7 for now?

Thanks in advance.

Motherboard: JW-A785GMT-EXTREME
OS: Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit.
Resolution: 1920 X 1080.

The GTX 670 is a rather powerful card and it wouldn't surprise me if it did run on dual screens (1080p screens that is...didn't mention resolution of your monitors). If its 1600p (2560x1600) screens, forget it. However, I'd have to say to stick to a single screen solely on the fact that you'll probably see performance hits due to the amount of VRAM on the card. For dual-monitor setups, should have at least 3GB VRAM for this kind of game since your resolution will be increased significantly (3840x1080).

But hey, you can always try it out on two screens to see for yourself if it's tolerable. And should run full screen if using dual monitors for increased field of view. Even if single monitor, you have the other monitor to do other things anyways.

I don't really see the point of Win8 other than newer security features for desktops...I find Win8 more useful for the mobile arena of things. Win 7 does everything I need it to do, so I passed on 8.

You'll probably get high settings. Have you tried to unlock that Phenom to a quad yet?

I would say medium to high as its 1080p, should max it at lower resolutions.

@elder jack, as Tig said you may be pushing it with two screens with only 2gb vram, heck my vram averages around 1800-2000mb on my 2gb card on one screen with texture mods. The next gpu i'll buy will atleast be 4gb.

Ok thanks for your help. To be honest I'm not that bothered about running it across two screens but I do want a dual monitor setup for my new PC for other things so I can play games on one and work or internet on the other.

If this setup is fine to play Skyrim at very high settings on one monitor at a high resolution while browsing the internet on the other then it all sounds good.

checking up to get myself a propper gaming rig,and since TES will be my primary game, figured i'd hear around here to see what might be best suited.

Taking in consideration the fact that i will do some heavy experimenting with mods, will this setup be able to run it smoothly,or would the 2nd (more expensive) setup be prefered?
Naturally the second one is more powerfull, but if the first one can run it perfectly as well, then i see no need to pay up a great deal more ^__^

(copied from a store site so some parts have several options,or personal choice like some of the Graphic Cards. As i am a complete derp in these matters, feel free to offer your opinions)

Setup 1:

CPU INTEL Core? i5-3570K or Core? i7-3770K
Motherboard Asus Maximus V Formula
Graphic card AMD Radeon HD6xxx with possibility of CrossFire
Memory 8Gb 1600Mhz DDR3 of Corsair
Hard Disk Intel? SSD Series 330 of 120GB or more
Connectivity DVI - HDMI - USB2.0 - USB3.0 & 7.1 Sound

Setup 2:

CPU Intel? Core? i7-3930K or i7-3960X Processor
Motherboard Asus P9X79
Graphic Card NVIDIA powerd GPU's
Memory 16Gb Vengeance Gaming Memory
Hard Disk Intel? SSD Series 330 of 120GB or more
Connectivity DVI - HDMI - USB2.0 - USB3.0 & 7.1 Sound

For those who can handle a dutch site,http://www.tones.be/desktops has the 2 rigs in question, the ACIII Revolution Rebel and the Snow Stryker, along with the available setups in the configuration.

For those interested in taking a look.

The kind of question you are asking is not only far too vaguely stated to do much with, it isn't an appropriate subject for this thread. The Community Forum's Tech Thread is where it belongs, but with better specifics about the most important part, the graphics.

Thanks for replying! :)
also, do you think that changing the ram from 16 to 8 would affect performance to a noticeable degree?
So, all on low at 1366x768, do you think it would be able to play at a good frame-rate?(30-60)

Not as long as you don't run much in the background. Though, you'll probably need to do some trial and error to see how much you can run in the background as it's different for everyone.

Hello, not really good on specs and was wondering if this laptop can run skyrim on at least medium settings:

AMD Radeon HD 6470M 1GB (Dedicated)

AMD Quad-core A8-3520M processor

6GB DDR3 Memory

750GB Serial ATA hard drive (5400rpm)

Also if I were to upgrade the RAM and swap the hdd for a ssd would that make a difference?

High end of low with that at best, you need a better GPU. The 6470 is weak in its desktop version and laptop versions are weaker. Adding RAM won't do a thing for it. You need a better GPU.

Thanks for the reply.

Also here is 1 more laptop that I was considering and would like to know if it could run skyrim on medium settings:

NVIDIA Geforce GT 635m 1GB (Dedicated)

Intel Core i5-3210M 2.5GHz

6GB DDR3 Memory

HDD 500GB

These are my current computer specs:

Windows 7 Home Premium (x64) Service Pack 1 (build 7601)
Gigabyte Technology Co., Ltd. X38-DS4, 266 megahertz
2.40 gigahertz Intel Core2 Quad
8GB DDR2 PC2-6400 RAM
AMD RADEON HD 6450

I know I need a better graphic card. The game is on medium settings and there's a good bit of lag, and doesn't look all that great. Can you recommend a card that'll work with the rest of my computer specs? I'll love to run on high with no lag, and hopefully try out some mods.

You want this thread for that: http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1423359-the-community-tech-thread-no-122/

This thread you're in right now is simply to tell you how a configuration will run the game.

Okay, building a new rig once all the parts come in. I know my machine will run Skyrim well, but I would like to know what kind of performance'/FPS can I expect with Ultra settings (minus ultra shadows which I heard are crappy anyway) including 2k textures mod, as well as various gameplay/immersion mods such as: Frostfall, WATER, and Realistic Lighting w/ Customization. I am not sold on ENB, but would consider it if I can find one that is less cartoonish and more "real," if that makes any sense.

Mobo - ASROCK Z77 Extreme3 ( 2 x PCI-E 3.0 x16/x8--makes little difference over PCI-E 2.0 at this juncture)
CPU - Intel Ivy Bridge i5 3.2Ghz ( 3.6 with "Turbo" but lets assume stock speed)
MEM - 8 gig DDR3 1600
VIDEO - SLI GTX560 2GB
Game HDD - Samsung 830 64gig S/ATA III SSD
Windows 7 64

It's not my first rodeo with building machines so assume optimal hardware drivers, and so on.
