Want better frameratesperformance? Disable FXAA and V-SYNC

Post » Tue May 15, 2012 9:28 pm

i think they shoudl add motion blur have you noticed when you press select to wait it shows motion blur? its weird i know but it looks amazing they should really consider putting motion blur in the engine it truly could give the game a more cinematic movie like feel to it.

If they could? Probably. If they would? Probably not. You know, we're talking Bethesda here. They aren't really known to even patch serious bugs, let alone optimizing a game after its release. And optimization would require people to tweak the code for PS3's architecture which unfortunately I don't see happening, since the PS3 is a pain in the [censored] to work with. Only PS3 exclusive devs like ND know how to treat the console well.
this is true maybe im getting ahead of myself here. But motion blur while running and fighting would be nice?

Would certainly be nice but motion blur like any other special effect costs performance. If they already have fps problems adding another effect isn't really helpful ^^

What I meant by 'motion blur' is having the currently permanent FXAA only be kicking in when moving. We don't need even more blur if that's what you're asking? I don't know much about the whole stuff though, so I'll leave the stage to the technical aces like CopyCat. He clearly knows more than I do. :]

i doubt they could include it in a patch, if i remember all bethesda games on consoles have never had any motion blur implementation added. But it would be awesome if they could include it you never know.

I see, this should indeed be possible and disabling it while standing still could be a nice improvement, as well. Sharper faces in dialogues for example. But the switch between no AA at all and suddenly FXAA while moving could be rather distracting.
I would still prefer they adjust the FXAA but if they don't want to maybe worth a try tu use it only temporarily

I sure as hell would prefer them to adjust the FXAA as well, but I don't get my hopes up this will happen. The game is released, they've got their money. If anything they'll just try to patch the growing amount of reported bugs, but even that's not a given. Yeah, Beth really turned me into a cynic. :/

If you want everything in the game to look like the blocky shadows, then by all means disable FXAA. IMHO, the limitations we are seeing are hardware related. Even if they gain another 10-20% FPS in optimization, it doesn't guarantee that Framerates will remain stable at all times. Personally, I am happy with the game. I'm sure a patch will correct the minor issues and then everything will work as intended. Personally though, I'll use my PC for non-exclusive games from now on. There's no comparison in graphical fidelity, smoothness of play, and control.

Here is my shout out for new consoles! Hurrah! http://gamerant.com/xbox-720-launch-2012-jeff-116912/ and the PS4!

The patch has not cleared, it has been submitted for QA testing by SONY and MS, they could request changes and pass it back to Beth yet so releasing a fix list won't be possible until it passes external QA.

Not sure if disabling vsync would be a good idea....The PS 3's framerate would prolly be much more variable than the Xbox's resulting in MUCH more screen tear than what the box is currently displaying....if they turned on Vsync with the current performance of this game then, more than likely, it's a mess with it off.

MLAA would be a good choice but FXAA is post process as well. Not sure which is more taxing onto the GPU, but I assume they are about the same(which is little).

Actually, the GPU does not calculate the shadows in Skyrim, the CPU does. This is one of the workarounds they've used to increase performance. After all, both consoles have an abundance of unused CPU power, but neither have much in the way of GPU power in terms of modern games. So, rather than taxing the GPU more (resulting in even lower frame rates, but better shadows) they've pushed the shadow rendering onto the CPUs. It's a pretty brilliant way to do it, but it clearly has some draw backs in the form of quality of shadows.

Options like this are reserved for PC users to get the game working on different PCs with different power.

Consoles should come with these options enabled for the best possible performance since all PS3s are the same and all Xboxs are the same. This is not a viable fix for these problems nor should console users ever have access or need access to said features.

That is one key difference between consoles and PCs if you want that level of control over how your game looks and runs buy it for PC. The game company decides what settings are optimal for the console version that is how it has always been and I don't see it changing anytime soon.

I'm not saying its a bad idea or that it will never happen I'm just stating a current FACT.

I concur with this. I was looking forward to this game for so long, and I expected the game to be similar performance-wise as Oblivion, but it hasn't been close. They should do something similar to how the first Bioshock did, which had an option to turn off the v-sync. I hate the AA they used as well, makes everything look like crap.

Come on Bethesda take off the blur effect ( FXAA ) please. I really hate the way it looks and maybe the game might run better. Because Fallout 3 and Fallout NV didn't have this and why in the hell would you put it in this game.

Did anyone noticed that this blur sometimes turns off
at the end of loading screens or after you die many times in heavy fight?
Game looks very sharp for a half of a second.

Yeah I noticed that too. And its very irritating to see that bc that's how I want the game to run the whole time.
