What are you reading?

Post » Mon May 14, 2012 12:05 pm

Note: If there is already a topic for this, and it's just a few pages old, please tell me and I will stop posting here and ask for someone to remove it.

I tend to like these kinds of threads, as it's interesting seeing who is reading what, but even more it's fun to discuss those things and perhaps get some recommendations based on them.
Whether it's short stories, genre fiction, literary fiction, comics, post what you're into here.

I just finished Bran Mak Morn: The Last King, an excellent Del Rey volume of Robert E. Howard stories. He wrote Conan, but if I'm not mistaken, this is a bit before that. There aren't many stories here, but they make a great, chilling whole.

I'm currently a bit past half-way in Stephen King's 'Salem's Lot, 100 pages into Wilbur Smith's When the Lion Feeds (I've never read him before, it's decent), and off-and-on reading the Lord of the Rings again (on Fellowship currently).

I tend to read a bunch of things at once - sometimes to my detriment. I'm also dipping into short stories, namely some Poe and Bradbury.

I've been hooked on the 'Song of Ice and Fire' series. I'm on the 4th book now and I would highly recommend anyone who likes fiction to read them.

The Tempest, for school (it's a pretty bad play. Not at all up to Shakespeare's normal standard). Just finished reading The Dark Tower and Other Unfinished Work/Short Stories by C. S. Lewis. Stuff I want to read - Dune, Hunger Games, the Foundation prequels, Lord of Souls

I love them. I haven't read a Dance With Dragons yet. Really expensive hardcover right now.

How was the Lewis stuff? I haven't even read Narnia.
I read Dune last year... I had heard it was complex, so maybe I haven't gotten everything out of it. I do think it would be worth re-reading. I wasn't blown away by it - the comparisons to the depth and epic scope of the Lord of the Rings didn't quite seem just to me, but like I said, it seems to have a lot of layers. I guess I'd say it didn't live up the hype - but I've heard of this happening to people before, and then it becoming one of their favourites on re-read.

I've only read the first three Black Company books, but I enjoyed them quite a bit. I'm looking forward to ordering the second three (in those newish omnibus editions they've released).

Wise Man's Fear, part 2, by Patrick Rothfuss.

It's being a great read so far, albeit the slow pace of the series overall  Can't wait for the 3rd book!

Oh, and btw, just finished Dance with Dragons. You can bet that GRRM knows how to keep you hooked until the end, and as soon as you finish it, you'll end up craving for the next book. Which will hopefully surface in less than 10 years *cringe*

I'm nearly done the first book of the 'Song of Ice and Fire' series and after that I'll probably start reading another Terry Pratchett book. I've gotten to the point where I've read almost every book I have two, three or even four times.

You've got some nice surprises coming up then. There were some weird parts in the second one. I like how Cook is trying to be humourous at the most unexpected moments. And the further story of Raven is worth knowing.

I'm reading that one as well. Only about 200 pages in though

My time has been really cramped lately :(

Don't read Narnia. I mean, they're quality stuff for children's books, but they're still the worst Lewis, IMO. Till We Have Faces is the best book I've ever read, so I recommend that one. His other stuff is decent and interesting. Dark Tower is pure sci fi, and there's a lot of philosophy about how memories and time travel and other crap like that might work (for example, he theorizes that time travel in the body is impossible due to the conservation of mass. Only time travel of soul or essence, if such things exist, would be possible). Sadly, there are only 8 chapters in what would've probably been a 30 chapter novel. Guess he didn't like it enough to keep writing it.

My favourite Pratchett is Pyramids, but I know that's not a terribly popular opinion.

Ooh, Raven was the one I wanted to know more about. It's been a year or so since I finished it, but yeah, didn't he disappear or wander off alone or something?
:P You probably can't tell me without spoilers!

I'll take that into consideration - but I will read Narnia some day.
Too bad about the Dark Tower thing. It always svcks when an author gives up/dies before completing what could have been amazing/their best work. I guess it's even worse when another author is hired to finish it, though...

Speaking of Dark Towers, I am going to finally begin the Dark Tower series by Stephen King one of these days.

At the end of the first omnibus, the Company found him back in the Barrowland. He got shot by Croaker with the Lady's arrow after the fight against the Dominator with the Lady and Darling getting taken out, then they simply left him behind for deserting earlier. That's all you're supposed to know already. Then the second book kicks off. Raven is truly my favourite character. Strangling his wife, then saying: okay, I can join you guys now.

Ooh, Constitutional Law, my favourite!

Never understood why everybody else hated it.

I'm currently reading A Canticle For Leibowitz. It's very good, rather minimalist post apocalyptic story.

It will. I drove an hour to the nearest Books-a-Million just to buy Clash of Kings the day I finished A Game of Thrones

* The Saxon Stories by Bernard Cromwell... It's AMAZING! Some might say that the "character development" is shallow, but I think that the characters are "develop enough" and the narrative is very direct to the point. If you like Skyrim and Viking/Medieval Themes... You will love The Saxon Stories!

I've read a ton of books over the past year and a half since I got my e-reader. I've stalled a bit lately due to being busy and playing Skyrim.

At the moment:
- Wrapping up Children of the Mind (still)
- Re-reading some M. Fowler stuff on enterprise software design patterns

I read most of the A Song of Ice And Fire series a couple of years ago and book 5 when it came out last year. Make with book 6 already, GRRM! We need two more before you stop writing, dammit!

If you like that, you might consider "For Good and Evil: The Impact of Taxes on the Course of Civilization" which I read a few years ago and convinced me to be an econ major. I've since decided not to be an econ major, but I still think that that book is very important and very well written.

Edit: Missed a word.
