What are you reading?

Why are there some people reading textbooks?

Is it even possible to read a text book cover to cover without shooting yourself? Or has school just ruined my view of textbooks?

Because sometimes it's actually advantageous to learn something. :-)
But cover-to-cover is never a good way to read one.

Why ever touch a book with the intent of learning when you have the Internet at your fingertips?

Books are, in my mind, reserved for fiction.

Yeah, I've heard a little bit of what it's about.
I seem to remember there being a Republic Commando game at some point... is it about those Boba Fett type bounty hunters?
There was a game, but I've never played it. The books are about a squad of Republic Commandos during the Clone Wars and I have to agree that they were pretty great books. I've read so many Star Wars books and it is one of the things I am a huge nerd about.
My personal favourite series in it is the Darth Bane trilogy.

Neat. I actually bought a few used ones - the trilogy starting with Heir to the Empire? I think they were the first licensed books to expand the universe past the trilogy, so I wanted to start there. I could be wrong.

Yep, the very first Star Wars books were the Hand of Thrawn trilogy written by Timothy Zahn. Thrawn himself is also one of the greatest masterminds of the entire lore in my opinion.

If you like horror books then I'd also recommend Death Troopers and Red Harvest by Joe Schrieber.

Some of that stuff is surprisingly interesting when you're not being forced to read it.

Oh, on the sci fi/fantasy front, I'm looking to read the Dying Earth stuff by Jack Vance pretty soon. Also, I need to get into Gene Wolfe, so probably the Book of the New Sun, though I hear you really have to pay attention and it can be a tough read the first time.

Anyone read any of those books?

Seems like the books are about the same stuff as the game. The game is fantastic by the way. A squad based fps, single player only. Perhaps the very most fun fps I've ever had the pleasure of playing.

That's pretty idiotic, even by internet standards.

I actually loved the first book in that series, The Shadow of the Torturer. It sets a great background, and the characters are good. What I loved the most about it was really the uniqueness of the setting... I would have read more, but unfortunately, I can't seem to find the 2nd book of the series, The Claw of the Conciliator, in the same collection (in portuguese btw). I just might buy the whole series in English someday...

Gene Wolfe is great! I read Soldier of the Mist years ago, and thouroughly loved it, and thanks to you mentioning Gene, I just learned that is a series... I must get the other two!

I'm not sure about in Portuguese but in North America the New Sun books are now published in two omnibus, the first one being called "Shadow & Claw" (because it has both books.)

I unfortunately picked up the second one (Sword & Citadel) at a bookstore, so now I'm gonna have to hunt down the first one to read first.

Anyone here read Dan Simmons? I got his first book, and am looking forward to trying him. "Discovering" a new author is always fun.

I've ordered games and books from Amazon.co.uk, their service has always been very good. The only thing to keep in mind is that you can only pay with credit card on there.

Yeah, no paypal, since eBay/Paypal are a competitor (I think that's why).

I think I may have ordered from Amazon.com once, and it was fine. I usually get stuff from Amazon.ca.

Do you mean the Marketplace or direct from Amazon?

Hey, btw, has anyone read Dragonsbane by Barbara Hambly? There was at least 1 sequel to it, but I don't think the second one was quite as powerful as the story in the first book. I've never checked if it became a "series" or had any more sequels beyond that.

If you haven't read it, and you like fantasy, magic and dragons portrayed in a very gritty "real-world" sort-of way, I'd recommend reading it. Whatever you do though, don't read the wikipedia article on it! b/c it sums up the basic plot of the story in one paragraph and completely ruins the ending for anyone who hasn't read it already. You probably just read the article anyway, didn't you? Dammit! What did I just say?

Has anyone read this book? What did you think of it?

I've actually been meaning to read her.

Yeah, I never read the Wiki synopsis when Wiki-ing books. Half the time that's all they have about a given book, though.

The Hobbit, Trust Me, I'm Dr Ozzy () and Martin Luther King's biography.

Although, I haven't touched any of them in about a month. I'm either too busy or too lazy to read at the moment.

Edit: Oh, also A Clash of Kings, but I shelved that for now. I should finish it in time for the new season of A Game of Thrones.

I've only got two books on the go at the moment. I've nearly finished George RR Martin's A Dance With Dragons (the latest in the Song of Ice and Fire series). Which is fantastic, already eagerly anticipating the next book.

And I've recently started The Wee Free Men, by Terry Pratchett. One of the funniest books I have ever read, even by Pratchett's standards. What's not to love about little blue men with Scottish accents that fight all the time?
