What are you thoughts about games costing $70 next gen?

Seeing what kinds of games are being and get made, if the prices go up (even on the PC, which is the only platform I'll be ever using), there's even less incentive to buy anything. Monies saved.

I have to agree with you here. I will no longer be buying new release games and I will only buy deep discounted games. Other then that I will be saving my money or investing in a new hobby.

More DLC, more cut content, more DRM, War on Terror Used Games, and now higher base price to top it all off.

This is not how you bring an industry into the modern decade. Thankfuly there's still Steam.

Kind of a perpetual cycle really, piracy hurts sales so put prices up, prices too expensive so resort to piracy, piracy hurts sales so put prices up...

They kind of threw "piracy" out the window when big companies started going to open war against used games. It's not even a legitimate excuse now.

60$ us nothing compared to Europe. Here in Denmark, new released games sometimes cost about 100$!

When Oblivion came out, i paid 120$ for that game! Im not screwing with you.

Well at that price I won't be buying any thing unless I know it to be good. Hell, I don't buy games right now really unless I know them to be good or have played earlier games in the series and hope for the best. I rent to find out if they're good then buy them, but if I'm not able to do that on next gen consoles, demos will have to suffice I guess and I'll be buying games a lot less if I buy any at all.

I'm already nonplussed with the state of the games market thanks to the likes of DRM, day one DLC, products being rushed to meet an over-optimistic release date and so on; following all that with a price hike is unlikely to improve my general demeanour, especially as the latest in the really big-name series I've bought over the past year have been mostly disappointing. I'm reminded of the state that the music industry got into in the late '80s where my spending plummeted because everything had just become a bit crap.

A thing to remember is a lot of people here in America are going through hard times or just making it. I honestly don't know anyone in real life who is going to buy new release @ $70 a pop. All of my friends and family agree we will buy buying our games when there onsale.

With increased prices, crushing the used game market, online passes, treating games as services rather than products and day-one DLC etc.. I think I will have to reluctantly give up my hobby of 25+ years. Sad times :(

There may be hope for the future though. I honestly believe that the publishers pushing for these measures are shooting themselves in the foot and they'll pay for their mistrust and contempt of consumers. Time will tell...

There's still old games to play. You just need to skip over this next generation and wait it out.

I have 23 years on me, and yes there is still old games to play. As long as gamers exist, there will always be a way to return to what is fun.

Oh you poor, poor Americans...

A $70 game in Australia is practically a bargain.

Ya and what are your wages over there. Try coming over to America and live on a American income and pay American bills. And then tell me your still going to buy new releases @ $70.

I refuse to pay 60$ plus on the normal video game, even on the computer

I think reasonable prices stop at 40$, although I might give in to spending 50$, :(

Kind of the reason why I still haven't purchased Skyrim yet

EDIT: Anyway, with today's pattern with "big games," you're almost better off waiting a year for the price to drop, because the game would actually be decently playable then

A new console game tend to cost $75-$90 here, so a little price drop would be welcome

Considering the price of DLC and the fact that it's being used to finish games, some of them cost more than $60 already.

$60 here in Canada. That's actually very well priced. $70 would make me change my mind on certain games, I'd end up sticking to Rockstar, Bethesda, and Obsidian releases.

Most games can be finished with out DLC, well except for ME3. If you dont buy the DLC for ME3 your missing a huge part of the story. Other then that games will give you a code to unlock or download the content if you bought the game new.

Yeah it's the same thing over here in Norway aswell. I've started to buy some games online though, and some of them are cheaper than the games in the store.

The wonders of PC gaming, and the amazing Steam sales. Most I spent on a single game was $25 or $35, and that was Batman Arkam City during Christmas. Most stuff I tend to get will go to $2-$15 on sale

But yeah, if I was choosy before, this will make me an incredibly huge penny pincher. Hell, I've already walked out of a Gamestop a few times, even in mid-buy, because the employee there would not stop shutting the [censored] up with trying to push every single little unneeded accessory, pre-order, and so on! Gave them warnings too. I swear, used car salesmen in movies are more tolerable. Good thing I'll only go there just to get DS games, which only happens once in a blue moon.

The part that gets me about game prices is that places like Steam allow for substantially larger profit margins due to being digitally distributed. I was reading an article the other day about consoles going to DD to prevent "piracy" (I'm sure they meant to say, "used game sales", but saying "piracy" makes them appear less like greedy fiends) and the author was singing the praises of the idea as it would "allow deep discounts to consumers by eliminating the high costs of physical distribution".

The only people I know of who actually believe any of those savings would get passed on to the consumer are all lobotomy patients.

Publishers have already proven with Steam that they fully intend on not only keeping all the savings for themselves, but they actually want to raise prices in order to attain immoral profit margins (I say "immoral" because they passed unethical a while back. The only place left for them to go is into the realm of supernatural defiance).

At least there're a few of us around! I'm not sure I've seen things this bad before; taking inflation into account, the prices aren't the highest they've ever been, but back then you tended to get decent packaging (the standard is what some publishers release as a CE these days), very little DRM, no nonsense like day one DLC and so on. The whole bundle of problems we see these days is pretty toxic for the games market.

It all depends where you buy from. 45 € for a console game from where I buy them, but at most other places it's 70 €.

70 $ is pretty cheap though, it's like the 45 € I pay for current games.
