What are you thoughts about games costing $70 next gen?

Post » Tue May 15, 2012 10:00 am

The rumor has been floating around for awhile now that next gen console games will be costing $70 each. If that rumor turns out to be true then PC will soon follow. I do not know about you guys, but I am done buying new releases if this turns out to be true. I can hardly justify paying $60 for a new release when most of the time the game turn out to be crap. What are you thoughts about games costing $70 next gen?

Yeah, if the prices are going up then I'll just wait a little longer and buy a cheap pre-owned or ex-rental copy instead.

They are $60 in the USA so they will end up costing us $10 more.

Poor pussums. Console games here are $100+ on release, with PC games usually around $80-$100. We even get screwed over by Steam. A game on sale for $5 for you guys is usually $15-20 for us.

And this is with the Aussie dollar being slightly above parity with the US$

If games were $100+ here on release day, I forsure would quit gaming.

Then it's a good moment to start a business in console game development.

Kind of a perpetual cycle really, piracy hurts sales so put prices up, prices too expensive so resort to piracy, piracy hurts sales so put prices up...

I dont believe in piracy when there are places like Steam that have massive sales all the time. I just bought Bulletstorm last weekend for $5.

I haven't bought a brand new game is so long, and it's because games cost $60. I basically live off Steam sales and games that are a couple years old.

I don't either. Just saying I can see why some people resort to it.

nes games used to cost $80 us dollars back when they first came out.

but that was mostly due to it being a new technology. even so, i am perfectly willing to wait months if not years for $70 to drop to $30 and below as i have a bunch of games i bought on steam that i have not even installed yet. All of which i expect to get at least 200 hours out of each.

I hope such a plague does not spread to Finland. For years we've had a default of 50€ for new games, I'd like to keep it that way.

If they're legendary like Skyrim, i'd pay at least $100.

It means people will be FAR choosier about what games they buy and I'd imagine fewer people will be preordering or buying games on release day. When people are dropping £50 for a game they're going to have to be certain that they're going to get a lot of playtime out of it.

Usually costs me 30-40 pound for a game anyway, so doing the math I'm only adding like an extra £5, not too much but it's enough to tell me "[censored] buying new releases"

- Wait the new consoles will have these anti-used controls so pre-owned games can't used. Then games will be getting dearer which would increase the pre-owned stocks demand.....Damn the companies aren't using their brains, especially when we're still in a "recession"

Publishers should be lowering game prices if they hope to curb used sales and piracy. Anti-used game tactics combined with a price hike, though? Can't say I'd be surprised.

I don't really care what games cost as long as the price is somewhat proportional to the time I'm going to waste on the game. There's no way to justify paying $70 for a 4-6 hour linear singleplayer game.

Since the amount of ridiculosity is going through the roof already with the DRM methods, the fishy EULAs, the lack of manuals or other physical content and the deteriorating quality of the games themselves with all the pointless DLC milking us for money, I can see myself stop gaming if this turns out true and find something else to do that's actually worth putting the money into, like fishing, buying myself a horse, getting more musical equipment etc.

Yep. If this was how much all new releases were going to cost the only games I'd have bought in the last year would have been ME3 and Skyrim.

It means more people will pirate games and justify their reason for doing so with the price increase.

Absolutely fine by me.

Compared to other forms of entertainment (music and film specifically) I think games are very reasonably priced. I've done the math, and my music collection is already worth about 5-6 times more than I anticipate spending on games during my entire lifetime.
