What did you do when you depressed?

Post » Sat Aug 11, 2012 12:58 pm

Well.. It's been weeks I've really depressed. I've no mood for anything. I've been locked up myself in my room for about two weeks or less. I've tried everything. Played games, listen musics, played my guitar bass, sleeping (Even I hate sleeping). But nothing can bring back my mood. I just need suggestions from my fellow forumers. What did you do when you depressed?

Edit : "Desperated" into Depressed

I'm not even sure what 'desperated' means...

Leave your room. Comiserate with friends, family, and loved ones. Isolation is unhealthy for most people.

1) Try exercising
2) Go to the theatre (wah? have I been spelling "theatre" wrong all this time?)
3) Read a book
4) Visit some stand-up comedy shows
5) Volunteer at the local dog pound, animal shelter, or humane society.
6) Swim with the dolphins

You mean "gotten depressed?"

Go for a walk. Doesn't have to be vigorous.

Go outside, get exercise, talk to people face to face. Isolation tends to make things worse for me.

Basically, it's the pick myself up by my bootstraps method and get myself going. Real life doesn't allow me to mope about.

Sometimes yelling at a hill works too; it can be rather cathartic.

If it's a long time, seek medical attention - it worked for me

I'm gonna go ahead and assume you mean "depressed".

Since you're talking about a matter of weeks, rather than months and years, I'm guessing you've just been feeling a bit down rather than properly clinically depressed, but but if you think it's something really serious then you should go and speak with a doctor, a counsellor or some other professional who's better trained to deal with it than strangers on the internet.

Failing that though, try a change of routine - you need to get out of your room and do something different. Even if it's just going for a walk once a day, that's a start. Or maybe think about picking up another hobby as well as the bass. Teach yourself to do something, maybe. That'll make you feel like you're living a more purposeful existence.

I isolate myself and study. For some reason it's easier for me to focus on things like that when I'm depressed.

If I'm feeling really bad I'll put on my headphones and escape into anime.

But I've only experienced emotional depression that lasts for a day or two, isolation may not be the best solution for clinical depression.

The problem is.. I'm not really a social person.
It's been few days my parents won't talk to me since our last argument.
Usually I was only talked with my twin brother.. but, maybe some of you already know what happened. I'll leave it to that.
And I'm not a "going out" person. I was usually only went out with my brother.

Okay this is going rather a bit confusing..

I don't want this to sound harsh, but you have to svck it up and do something besides nothing. I'm sure there must be grief counselors somewhere near you. If you are religious, go to your local temple. Or go see your family doctor.

There aren't many good suggestions for getting over depression that involve staying locked in your room. So if you really want to get better you have to try.

Talk about it. Think about it. Come to peace with it.

The more thought you afford it, the more it'll lose its sting.

Definitely leave your room, as the others have said. Exercise does often help, if you're the type who often doesn't get enough to begin with.

See a movie in the theater. Go to the local fruit market. Window-shop a favorite store. It's funny how sometimes I can be feeling a bit down and some brief random encounter with a stranger while I'm out makes me feel better. And this from someone who's also not very social.

If you really don't want to (or can't) leave the house/room much, watch a lot of stand up comedy. I find playing games good for suppressing/ignoring emotion, but it doesn't really make me "feel better." So try something else. Comedy shows etc., (sustained laughter helps a lot), building something with your hands, writing a short story, cleaning/re-arranging the furniture/stuff in your room, whatever you can think of that's a bit outside your normal routine but might give you a small sense of achievement.

And if all else fails, there's always The Shawshank Redemption. ;)

You can't complain about being depressed if you're not do anything about it. Pretty much anything that would allow you to get over it will require you to do something.

Stand up comedy seems a fine idea. I'll try it.
I'm actually can't go out much, but I'll try it. Fruit market seems kinda cool though.

Thank you everyone :)

Believe me, I've tried to. But for exercise or walk outside, I'm not in condition for that. But I'll try it tomorrow.

You mean in physical or mental condition? You don't have to be an Olympian to go for a walk.

And like I said, depression is going to dull the desire to do anything. You can't just sit around and hope it goes away...because more often than not, it won't.

I would say both.
Yeah I got your point. You're right, do nothing just makes things worse.

Damn it just so hard to move on..

But really, when/if I'm depressed, I get out of the house and get some air. It's better then being inside in my opinion.

Look for someone to play your bass with, a good jam session might help you take your mind off things and you might gain a friend in the process.

I prefer to not to touch those things.
But fresh air seems fine

This is actually cool idea. But I just wondering. Who should I ask to? I'm not a social person :(

First things first. Go outside and get some sun. Do you have a bike? if not go buy one.
They are great for getting in shape and seeing more of the world around you.

Do some exercise. Even if you don't want to go outside, jump up and down a bit and jog on the spot in your room. Gets the endorphins flowing, stops you feeling down. Fresh air and exercise would do you the most good.
