What fads do you remember?

Post » Sun May 13, 2012 11:20 pm

This might just only be my school, but I'll mention them anyway.

First it was skating. Tony Hawk Pro Skater had just come out and everyone was nuts for it. Literally, everyone had a skateboard, whether they knew how to skate or not. I remember this!!

Then there were those shoes that light up when you step. I had Power Ranger ones, because I was a boss. And this!

Then there was a brief stint where Aaron Carter became popular. Who?

For a while, there was a Pokemon/Digimon craze. Pokemon cards, Pokemon GB/GBA games, Pokemon Stadium 1/2 for the N64. Then those devices they had in Digimon, I forgot what they were called, but each character had one in different colors. I had a yellow and green one. IIRC, the yellow one is supposed to release that little orange flying pig that turns into a giant angel. Yeah awesome times!

Speaking of rubber bracelets, we had these rubber strings people used to tie together in weird patterns. We called it Scooby Doo, but I don't know the real term for it. I remember this but never participated, thought it was [censored].

Then came WCCF cards. Those football cards you use to play that annoying ass arcade game. This was in 8th grade. I don't remember any real fads since then. I guess we all matured out of them after that. Ahh your american, that is why there is slight differences. did not have this either

Those shoes with wheels in the heels (can't remember what they were called).

RuneScape. There was a time in middle school when everyone was playing it.

Flipping baseball cards.
Dressing as a hood (leather jacket with 117 zippers, garrison belt, motorcycle boots).
Trying to do your hair like Presley or Edd Burns and failing miserably.
 So you were a hood.
And as for the hair, more brill cream.

Poodle skirts, saddle oxfords, ironing hair, Paisley or bleeding madris pants, hula hoops, mini skirts, bell bottoms, snap beads, peddle pushers, banana seats,....on and on and on.

crystal growing kits.

I remember growing this seemingly huge copper sulphate crystal when I was eight or nine. Really pretty. That sort of thing is probably banned these days since it's poisonous if you ingest about eight tons of it at once.

Sherbet dip? They were the cardboard tubes (that would invariably go soggy quite quickly) full of the offensive fizzy powder that had a somewhat gruesome liquorice stick for retrieving the stuff.

I remember Runescape. My friend who thought if one was a "gamer" then they weren't cool, yet once I showed him Fallout 1&2 he bought it and he was hooked. He was really into Runescape too.

No, there used to be chemistry sets that you could buy in most toy stores that you could use to make your own crystal formations. Pretty much just for the "oh cool, look what I made" factor. They may still make them, but I'm not sure.

As for mine. I was big into Yu-Gi-Oh for a while. I still have my old deck and I even still play with friends who kept theirs as well. Old ruleset of course, the rules have changed so much since and none of us ever bothered to keep up.

The stuff I'm thinking of I think was called Fun Dip or something like that. The dipping stick was edible too.. Pretty ingenious really

Fads are peculiar. In the 80's we started wearing our collars "UP" because it was cool. Then, suddenly it was sooo uncool to do it. So we all stopped to avoid ridicule. Then last decade, it started happening again. I think collars go down now.... I'm not sure I stopped paying attention.

Also, bell-bottoms. Cool in the 70's, not in the 80's or 90's. Early last decade they resurfaced.... only to disappear again.

Breakdancing.... 80's cool, 90's lame, 2000's even cooler than in the 80's. Wha???? (only this time without the parachute pants with 200 zippers on them)

I forgot platform shoes in my first post. I still have a couple pair hiding in a closet- brown/tan bump-toes saddle shoes (1" sole, 2" heel) and black (2" sole, 4" heel). These are the only reason I ever topped 6" tall.
