What fads do you remember?

Post » Mon May 14, 2012 4:47 am

I was thinking when I was back in middle school and high school and I got to thinking of the fads. I remember kids wearing those colored rubber bracelets and they symbolized certain things. I remember when some of the boys would dye their hair blond. Spiked hair was popular when I was in 5th and 6th grade as well. Heelys were a big thing too.

What fads do you remember?

This might just only be my school, but I'll mention them anyway.

First it was skating. Tony Hawk Pro Skater had just come out and everyone was nuts for it. Literally, everyone had a skateboard, whether they knew how to skate or not.

Then there were those shoes that light up when you step. I had Power Ranger ones, because I was a boss.

Then there was a brief stint where Aaron Carter became popular.

For a while, there was a Pokemon/Digimon craze. Pokemon cards, Pokemon GB/GBA games, Pokemon Stadium 1/2 for the N64. Then those devices they had in Digimon, I forgot what they were called, but each character had one in different colors. I had a yellow and green one. IIRC, the yellow one is supposed to release that little orange flying pig that turns into a giant angel.

Speaking of rubber bracelets, we had these rubber strings people used to tie together in weird patterns. We called it Scooby Doo, but I don't know the real term for it.

Then came WCCF cards. Those football cards you use to play that annoying ass arcade game. This was in 8th grade. I don't remember any real fads since then. I guess we all matured out of them after that.

I remember the Pokemon cards soaring in popularity, I traded and collected them for a few years. The Aaron Carter craze was ridiculous, he was a whiny teenybopper.

Parachute pants. IIRC my brother had a pair, and I though they looked ridiculous on him.

Mostly popular in Holland/Belgium I think, I don't think it was ever a big hit in the rest of the world.

We had these things called "pvssyr Rings" at school when I was 8 or 9, which were basically hoops with some nuts attached, and you'd spin them and they'd make noise. They seem pretty pointless now, but back in the day, if you didn't have one, you were out.

Other than that we had the usual, scooters, Pokemon cards, Dragon Ball Z cards.

Probably worth mentioning I was born and raised on Kauai.

Pogs? I am 21 and remember pogs. I hated when a fat stack was up for grabs and my opponent took out a slammer...were not that old lol.

Dragonball Z and everyone screaming Kamahameha!!!

Mortal Kombat.

Traveling in packs as kids around our neighborhood without a zillion over protective moms freaking the eff out.

Yu-gi-oh for a brief amount of time in middle school i think.

Soap shoes for grinding rails and such things.

Skating has been a fad for over two decades or more now. Idk if that makes it a 'fad' or more of a sport.

@Solid_Moose, Yup, I remember those pvssyr rings. How the hell those became popular idk lol.

I remember the skateboarding fad in the late '70s/early '80s: the skateboarders reckoned they were much cooler than the rather disco-oriented rollerskaters. Then there was another skateboarding fad in the '90s, and there appears to be another one around now. There was probably one in the '60s too, but I'm not quite old enough to remember whether there was or not! The '70s one seemed the biggest, but that's possibly just because it's when I was a kid.

Skateboards in the '60s had steel wheels...not a great idea. The ride became much smoother when they adopted the composite/urethane wheels from indoor roller skates.

I'll stick to those I remember from high school.
bell bottoms
hot pants
long hair

roller skating (almost lived at the rink)

Even as someone who's never skateboarded, that sounds painfully jarring! As well as probably causing quite a bit of damage...

I remember clackers! They were a common sight in the school playground when I was about five or six. They didn't really seem to have any purpose other than for assaulting people in a noisy manner. I seem to recall that they were very painful. Well, that and loud, which seemed to amplify the pain.

Pogs: They where a small cardboard disk and you used a metal disk called a "Thumper" or "Slammer" to slam a stack of pogs and whatever pogs came up heads up you get to keep them. I collected them a long time ago but never played it.

Magic the Gathering: A card game that's still going on today.

My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic: The current fad :D .

I remember them being around at the same time as that awful fad for wearing Bay City Rollers tartan. Must get home in time to watch Shang-a-Lang.

Hey Bay City Rollers drink milk, it was always every 2 years coca cola yo yo's without fail, later on they had skateboard but they were expensive here so not to many people had them, BMX bikes, wow you could do tricks on them, but i could get anywhere ten times faster and with less effort on my racer, all they were good for was showing off popular and pointless probably caused more accidents as well.

We had collector cards before the current fad of collector cards but they would be for tv shows or movies and such, and werent games, magic the gathering cards burn well and pop when they burn best thing for them.
