I'd say that bows are a better stealth weapon. They make almost no noise when you pull them out, (unlike swords - which always make a sharp SHINK! sound as you pull it out of your sheath) and you can stay hidden in the shadows as you pick off your enemies from a far.

most likely a longsword or 2h sword of which i craft with my own two hands it will probably end up being steel at first, and ill RP that i reinforce it later with other materials and keep it as best as possible(probably will do this up to dragonbone). i will also never taint it with any corrupting magics which many seem fit to possess their blades( basically won't enchant them because my first playthrough will be a brutish nord who despises the very idea of mages and magic alike. who needs cheap fuzzy powers when all you need is a fine crafted blade of your own to defeat even the toughest of foes?)

Seeing as how I normally play a rogue-ish character I follow the trend of assassinations and sneaky...ninja stuff. I'll more than likely be holding either two daggers or a dagger and a sword. Yet to have pick until I play the game.
Or course a bow. But that goes without saying obviously.

One character all magic (pure mage), another magic and conjured daggers and bow (shadowmage), and another magic and one handed sword (spellsword).

I'm not sure, but I can tell you I don't want to gravitate back towards longswords. I want to work outside what I did in Oblivion.

I want to branch out and use a 1H axe or mace with some fire or something in the other hand. Something outside my personal Oblivion box.

Those.

I never played a Mage in Oblivion because I didn't like how you changed your spells. With dualwielding a whole new world has opened up and I will dual magic my first playthrough. A focus on illusion and conjuration to control the battle then destruction and alteration to take out foes. I will of course need to keep my restoration skills up as well as enchanting when a foes is alone or my magicka is low.

Just curious for people who choose bow and arrow. I would like to just use bow and arrow exclusively, but am not sure that they will be effective in close combat. Was thinking they'd be a good sniping weapon, but then you'd have to switch to something else once the enemy knows where you are.

I'll be using a bow for distant stealth kills and a sword+dagger combo. Range, stealth kills, and good melee damage outside of stealth. What's not to love?

Depends on the character.
Breton Battlemage = one handed blades and destruction/conjuration
Redguard Knight or Champion= sword and shield or greatsword
Bosmer Hunter = bows and one handed blades
Plus I want another beserker type character that uses maces or waraxes.
