I assume the basic terrain would smell of a nice pine scent. Dragons probably would smell like burnt meat? The crypts most likely smell similar to that of retirement homes, you know dead things, and things that are dieing but refuse to go.

If you were physically in Skyrim what would stuff smell like?

The trees, the dirt, water, Giants, Dragons, Your neighbours etc if its in the game what would it smell like?
Back sometime around 1998 to 2000 a company offered a USB device that would programatically mix custom scents. It was an interesting thought at the time that with one of those supported, then the Baldur's Gate sewers could have smelled like well...
sewers. It could also have put out the scent of a wolf den or rat warren. I think (so long as it never turns out to be carcinogenic) that future games derived from TES and the like wil incorporate scent into their VR experience, and it will probably be a lot of fun.

*As for what Giants smell like... I think they would probably not smell like something fun.

Y'see, this is why the environmentalists' claim that a primitive society is a "cleaner" one is wrong. Middle age level technology is full of pollution and "environmental damage", because when you're fighting to stay alive in a hostile world, the last thing you care about is whether or not some rare striped slug is going to go extinct.

Imagine the dirtiest outhouse you've ever smelled...then multiply that by the size of the city or town.

As for a Falmer's armpit...do you really want to know?

... in Europe and Northern America. In the Middle East or Southern Asia to find cultures where physical and mental cleanliness were considered equivalent.

The middle east in the middle ages? You mean where they only eat with their right hand because they use their left hand in lieu of toilet paper?

i read somewhere that in the medieval times the garbage was overflowing so much that it got in the way of city defenses. people drank alcohol instead of water because the water was undrinkable. stuff like that.

Yeah, but those cultures are kind of irrelevant, considering the European basis for Skyrim's design and culture.
However, as has been noted, the Vikings were infamous for how clean they kept themselves, and bathing regularly. Southern Europeans considered bathing unhealthy (And there's a grain of truth to that. There was a strong correlation between bathing and the spread of disease in Post-Roman society. Poor bathing technique leaving the skin open to infection, and lecherous activity involved around co-ed bathhouses.)

What is with people saying there are no "bathrooms" in Skyrim? WHAT THE HELL DO YOU THINK ALL THOSE BUCKETS STORED IN SECLUDED CORNERS ARE FOR?! Ever heard of something called a "Chamber Pot"?

The outdoors of Skyrim would smell fresh and wonderful. I'm thinking of the winters and summers I've spent in Washington, Skyrim would smell like that. Not Washington D.C.

The cities would probably smell like dirty clothes and stinking bodies and sewage.

Considering the trail of dead bodies and carcasses the dragonborn leaves behind everywhere, I'd guess it smells pretty awful...

Outside of towns it would smell nice and clean. Inside of towns it would smell like a rotting crotch.

Boring answer...

You wouldn`t notice as you`d probably smell worse than everyone else.

Think about it, you travel for miles on each day out. You spend hours in stinking tombs and deep dank dungeons fighting all kinds of foul smelling things. the only wash you ever get is IF you bother to take a dive in the river.

And you think a peasant in a field would be smelly?

There should be another saying that guards say when a Dragonborne enters a city..

"GODS YOU STINK!"

Actually I RP and my character takes baths daily. No joking, after each dungeon/adventure he takes a dip in the river because I know in real life I wouldn't be able to stand that smell.

Within towns, I imagine something more mildewy.. and sweaty. Like when people play basketball or run in the rain, and then get in your car?

That was kinda the smell I was going for, but imagine if those guys played basket ball every day and never showered. It would get pretty ripe you know?

I can imagine it. The reason I mentioned car btw is that I kicked a guy out of my car once for that.. and made him walk home. I'd probably faint in a Skyrim town.

Unless they happen to import Telvanni Bug Musk by chance, most people - particularly the Orcs and Nord men - will probably smell like B.O.
As would Giants and Falmer.

All the flowers would smell like - well, flowers. Bears would smell like bears. Horses would smell like horses.

Draugr - I don't know, rotten decaying flesh perhaps?

Burning wood, because there are fireplaces and torches everywhere.

And you'd smell that before anything else.

I'd hate the place then. One of my pet peeves is all the fireplace smoke hanging over my town on cool, still nights. Burning wood is very popular in the Western US - never mind the inefficiency and pollution.

Man do I know it, I live in northern Cali and all my neighbors love using wood stoves. Gets annoying that I can't sit in my own house without svcking in smoke.
