I think Skyrim blows Skyrim away

Nope, Skyrim is much better than Skyrim. :D

AD&D Pool of Radiance (1988)

For '88 it was way ahead of its time. You moved in first person, but switched to third-person turn-based mode for combat. More importantly, it was fairly non-linear, and it went out of its way to make it interesting. The Wizard's Pyramid, for example, had a nasty puzzle in it. With no Internet to fall back on, you either had a clue book or a real smart friend to help you past the tough spots. The three sequels were solid, but they couldn't match the open feel of the first game.

My favorite trick was to hire a mercenary then kill him in a fight. Free gear to sell for cash. :)

Each new RPG blows the last one away, so, it's Skyrim right now.

Planescape: Torment. The story, the dialogue, the party.
Morrowind. The world.

Baldur's Gate 2: Shadows of Amn. The whole series, actually. Good story, good characters, good gameplay, and Irenicus is one of the best villains ever. Plus, as far as 2d games go, it doesn't look bad. Still play it about once every 18 months or so.

KotoR II, Fallout 1-3, New Vegas, Planescape: Torment, Morrowind, and Jade Empire are better as a "RPG".

As an overall game from the above list, I would only rank Fallout 3, Planescape: Torment, and Morrowind above Skyrim.

All time?

Tied between Final Fantasy 7 & Kingdom Hearts.

But in the past 5 years it would be Demon & Dark Souls.

Enjoyed those the most because I'm a masochist.(not really, I just enjoyed the challenge)

Skyrim is too laggy/buggy for me to say I enjoyed it 100%

For me it is Morrowind. I've never been more addicted to a game, probably played 2000+ hours with countless characters.

You people are crazy, Skyrim was clearly better than Skyrim. Skyrim IMO was a dumbed down version of skyrim.

Wow. I can't imagine ever putting that much time into a single-player game. Multiplayer, easily... but single-player, 1000 hours is usually the maximum.

I bet I've put over 5000 hours into playing and modding Morrowind over the course of the last 9 years. It's worth it.

Chrono Trigger for me. It just had a perfect mix of everything and is one of the few games i completed multiple times for all the endings :)

Hoo boy. Need to think back a bit...

Let me see...

Ah, yes! Suikoden II. Came out way back for the PS. Old school, turn-based RPG.

Spent $150 US for the game, 'cause I slept on it, and it was very difficult to find later.

Anyway, I liked it so much 'cause it had a little bit of everything. Memorable characters. Great character development. Story had a lot of "human" feeling in it; I laughed, cried, got angry, and jumped for joy. Wasn't too over the top. Minus the fantasy stuff, it almost seemed like it could have been a real story. Having a bunch of characters in your party; different combinations, different possibilities. Enjoyed the cooking mini-game. Probably more reasons, but I can't think of any more.

What he said.

Fallout New Vegas!!! I lucked out and had a virtually bug free experience maybe that’s why. The game itself is absolutely incredible. Free world, tons of choices if there was level scaling I did not notice it. It also satisfied my nostalgic feeling for Fallout 2.
If Beth or the community manage to iron out the bugs in Skyrim and produce some great DLC/Mods, I think Skyrim might get first place in my book.

Honorable mentions: Gothic 2, Witcher, Morrowind, planescape torment, Vampire: Bloodlines

Neverwinter Nights 1 definitely, if only for the toolset provided. The toolset was amazingly simple and amazing to use, and nothing else has come close. The little adventure modules provided by the community are the best

Gameplay wise, I'd have to say Morrowind for the 'do anything and everything' factor. Never have I felt so lost in a mystical world

Storywise...Planescape: Torment. Hands down

Right now, Skyrim, I've just completed a quest that I know is going to come back and bite me on the ass, although I think the consequences for some actions could be a little harsher, I sometimes get the feeling Beth are being a little soft, and I mean this for both good and bad, as an example, if my good character does something to help out a traveler, I'd like to see something like murder committed by that traveler later on, something the murderer could not have accomplished if the PC had not helped in the first place.

That's crazy. I'd estimate that i've put about 800-900 hours each into Morrowind and Oblivion, with mods.

Baldur's Gate 2 and Fallout 2. Everything released since those just does not have the same bang per buck. I bought like 3 copies of each of those because I love them so much. I still play them to this day... Fallout 2 has so much content appear based on how you develop the character that I almost always find new experiences even after clearing the world 20 times.

Baldur's Gate I and II. The combat system was revolutionary, the graphics were great back then, character customization was second to none, the story was beyond engrossing, the music was epic, the dialog choices were complex, the ability to control an entire party of 6 was amazing... Just an epic, fantastic game that will likely remain my #1 forever.

To the Diablo fan boys: you guys really missed out :/

Hard choice between Borderlands and Dead Island. Both games just kick so much ass.

I'm a svcker for games that allow you to make meaningful choices, and will forgive a LOT of flaws with a game if that aspect is well made. The end result is I love games a lot of people were disappointed with, such as ME2 and DA2.

The best effort I've seen in that style of gameplay was actually from an action/rpg hybrid, called Alpha Protocol. It's a game with many flaws, but I've never seen it matched when it comes to making player choices matter.
