What's Your Favorite RPG and Why?

Morrowind is my number one, it's pretty much the quintessence of what I like about games.

Daggerfall has always remained my favourite RPG. So many skill choices, like the ability to mantle and climb over walls etc. a huge, huge world to roam. Towns/villages felt alive with all the villagers bustling about. The sheer mass of apparel/items for characters is brilliant. Some really cool quests, like meeting Manimarco for the first time and tons of generated quests also. The dungeons are just massive and can be very eerie and the creatures could really wipe the floor with you, well lets just say Ancient Lich.nuff said.

I really like Skyrim but Daggerfall still remains my favourite RPG to date.

SKYRIM! :celebration: Reason: It's as immersive as Morrowind but offers much longer gameplay!

gothic 1+2, no doubt.
from the moment on you could provoke the city guard and you were just instantly beaten to death, i was in love.. and that was after 5minutes of gameplay :D take that, level scaling!

Skyrim will be once the creation kit is released and the game is sufficiently modded, until then I would say Morrowind. Being Scandinavian I am really loving to see the lore and environment in Skyrim but currently the console-arcade feel to the UI and gameplay is rather distracting and the broken magic system is insulting to those who love to play pure casters. Furthermore the quests and factions have been reduced to something I would expect on the first Nintendo system many years back, not on something new. But it is very hard to beat the open worlds in TES games from an RPG perspective.

Planescape: Torment, Fallout 1, Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura (Yes, it was buggy, but dammit I loved it to death)

I have not really liked Square since the 16-bit era. Yes, I am one of those "Final Fantasy 7 was NOT as good as Final Fantasy 6" people. In fact, while the quirky art styles worked on the 8-bit and 16-bit platforms because of obvious technical limitations, it didn't seem to bother me. Perhaps because of my age, and lower expectations for writing as well. I pretty much have given up on JRPGs period particularly with their horrible writing, doe-eyed androgenes, odd characterization, etc. Even the art direction on most the modern ones are cringeworthy to me. It's very early, I'm very tired, and probably not properly articulating my dislike for such things. I don't know if you can properly call them RPGs but I'd say the exception to the above is Demon's/Dark Souls.

All that being said when I was a younger fella I loved Secret of Mana, Final Fantasy 6, and Chrono Trigger (Did not like a lot of the character design)

At the moment, Skyrim is my favourite Action/rpg (note the action bit of the genre definition). A lot of people expecting, probably quite rightly, for it to be something other than it is, but if you are lucky enough to get a bug free run, does what it does very well. Why is it my favourite? Because Fallout 4 hasn't been made.

I don't like older titles anymore, it's more nostalgia nothing more. I didn't buy a quad core cpu + decent video card to run 10 year old games regardless of how good it was.

Anyways I prefer to think of the now. That said, am playing Deus Ex Human revolution atm. It's a FPS with a ton of rpg elements and story. Loving the game so far!

Neverwinter Nights, by a long stretch.
That amazing toolset, and the Dungeon Master client, means that your imagination really is the only boundary.
There's no game that comes close to it, in my mind, and I don't think we'll see a game like it in a very long time.

Overall, I very much enjoyed Human Revolution. I kind of look at older titles more like good music albums, or good books. Things that can be returned to and kind of "endure the test of time" as it were. Whether that will be true forever is one thing, but the ones I mentioned hold up very well. Plenty of other RPGs out there I enjoyed almost as much, certainly not an easy question for ME to answer. If I had to pick an absolute favorite though it'd be an older one.

Gothic 2. The first SP RPG I ever really played and liked. It was amazing in many, many ways.
Neverwinter Nights. Especially played MP a lot - fantastic game.
And then I really liked Dragon Age: Origins.
KotoR.
I'm not sure if Dark Souls can be catagorized as a RPG, but that game is amazing as well. Fantastic combat.
..
.
And of course I find Skyrim very entertaining so far too :)

The original Fallout, Betrayal at Krondor, Might and Magic VI, and most recently Dragon Age: Origins, and the TES games.

Even by todays standards I would say the original Fallout is still more than playable and easily as much fun as Fallout 3 and NV, although I confess, I'm not sure I would enjoy Betrayal at Krondor and Might and Magic VI as much as I did the first time.. its probably worth finding out now that I think about it.

It had the most amazing and original setting/story I've ever seen.

Music or books don't date in the way video games do though. Some are of their time admittedly but classics are timeless. A better comparision IMO would be films. Some films although technologically dated are still great. After watching for a while you almost forget they are silent or in b&w. Others have little to recommend them other than being technologically advanced (Avatar I'm looking at you). Once the novelty of the fancy gimmickry wears off they'll be forgotten.

Final Fantasy. I was introduced to them around the ending of the PS one days and up until the end of PS2. The last one I played was FFXI and then on PC I played FF online which I loved to death. I wish Skyrim had that complexity, keep it single player still and add it to the world of Skyrim. Too me, that would be the perfect mix.

I wouldn't even classify Skyrim as a RPG anymore. It is more of action/adventure with RPG elements here and there. They toned this one down a lot from previous TES games.

Morrowind (by far my favorite game ever, and game which I show people as a proof that video games are an art), Diablo and Diablo 2: LoD.
I really hope that DaggerXL (fan made remake of Daggerfall) will be out soon since I have feeling that it's only other game which can surpass Morrowind imo.

Skyrim will be once the creation kit is released and the game is sufficiently modded.

A great RPG shouldn't need to be modded to become close to perfection. :whisper:

Anyway, I wonder if people are comparing story, mechanics or lore.
Cause I'm comparing mechanics.

Greatest story I'd have to say Chrono Trigger. Cause while I love Fallout it has never made me cry cause of character development.
If going by lore then I'd say Fallout prior to Fallout 3's mess.

But going by mechanics I'm thinking of what RPG allows me the most choices.
Sure Deus Ex is a great RPG but it does not have as branching dialogue as Fallout.
Sure enough Chrono Trigger has a fantastic story but it's choices are limited and it's dialogue is linear.

Cause choosing between races, appearal, facial appearance and use of skills is not what makes an RPG for me.
Hell, Saints Row 2 is as much of an RPG as Skyrim is.
I mean, you can choose race, six, weight, muscles, facial appearance, walking style, gang greetings, rude remarks, voice, clothing options, the weapons you want to use, you can improve your character by doing Activities and Challenges and Collectibles. (Actually, considering it's customization options Saints Row is even more of an RPG in terms of defining a character. :P )

3 of those in fact :

- Ultima 6, was huuuuuge step ahead compared to other RPGs at this time. I loved also Ultima 7 part 1 & 2 but the 6 will still be ahead to me.
- TES 2 : Daggerfall, for the sheer size of its world, the gloomy setting (will forever remember first night walking in the town of Daggerfall), the unique leveling system, complex spell system.
- Baldure's Gate 2 : for all the goodness of the Forgotten Realms' sword coast setting, for the maestria of Bioware at storytelling, for the depth of the world, NPC personnalities, plot twists, etc

The one that sticks out for me is Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magic Obscura. Really my first foray into RPG land and very memorable. Not sure how well it would play nowadays, but the nostalgia is up there.

Skyrim in many ways is becoming one of those games that I can't stop thinking about at work or whenever. Bugs, flaws and all, this game is just awesome.
