I'm no baker but I'd say muffins are much denser.

Arrogantly twisting the sterile canvas snoot of a fully charged icing

Yuk... lets try that again...!) he poots forth a quarter-ounce green rosette
Near the summit of a dense but radiant muffin of his own design.
Later he says:
Some people... some people like cupcakes exclusively, while myself, I say
There is naught nor ought there be nothing so exalted on the face of gods grey
Earth as that prince of foods... the muffin!

OT, just a guess, but don't muffins have milk in the recipe, whereas cupcakes don't?

Cupcake batter is light, muffin batter is dense. Cupcakes are never savoury, while muffins are traditionally savoury. Cupcakes have icing, muffins don't.

I would have said English muffins for breakfast, a muffin and a cupcake for desert. With, respectively, Marmite, blueberries, and chocolate, in that order.

Daaaaamn I was too late. :(

Basically this. I'd disagree that cupcakes are never savory - I've made LOADS of savory cupcakes over the years. Bacon maple is my current favourite...

And I make LOADS of sweet muffins. Blueberry muffins are fairly standard...

Most cupcakes, imo, taste like cheap pre-mixed cake-mix with canned frosting on top. I've had some very tasty cupcakes but not often.

Muffins can range from healthy-ish bran/nut etc. creations to dense, sweet, decadence.

How many homemade cupcakes have you had? The pre-mix cake-mix kind is VERY American. Over here (in the UK) cake mixes are a relatively new thing. Most people bake from scratch. Personally I loathe boxes of cake mix. Just buy some damn flour, sugar and powdered milk you lazy git...

Yeah I feel quite strongly about it. :(

I live in America. :P Most "great" cupcakes come from restaurants vs. the home kitchen around here and I'm not paying $3-5 for a stupid cupcake. Not saying there aren't plenty of ppl making great cupcakes in their kitchens, just that I'm not privvy to them.

The other issue, for me personally, is I'm not a huge "regular" cake or frosting fan to begin with. I usually scraqe frosting off.

An upsized muffin is... A loaf.
Hehe...I like this one. :)

Depends. I wouldn't call a poppyseed or banana muffin/bread a "cake." But it's all how one personally defines things, mostly.

Density, other than that, how people view them.
People see cupcakes as a sweet dessert style treat where as muffins as seen as a healthy breakfast/snack item.

If it's not chocolate, vanilla, strawberry, or one of the other candyesque flavors and has no frosting, it's a muffin.
