I have a feeling most people will end up in Riverwood first. Seeing as how I ended up in Cheydinhal instead of the Imperial City first in Oblivion, I'm kind of hoping I get lost in Skyrim as well and end up somewhere that isn't Riverwood. However, it seems to be best for my character to just go to whatever town we are "meant" to go to as we start the game, to get the generic starter's quests and items.

Yea I was thinking that to I want to be able to have dragons roam free then I might just start exploring on my own after that then go back to the main quest

To Riverwood firstly and I plan to staying there some time.
Then we'll see...my first character won't concern himself with his dragonborn destiny, he'll be a freelancer thief, so he'll go where he'll want to go.I plan to start doing MQ later in the game.

I'm not a hardcoe roleplayer, but in the back of my head I always have some sort of background story. My Nord character is the offspring of my Imperial Morrowind/Oblivion character. A long story short my Imperial character ended up with the east empire trading company, soltheim/skyrim business unit. He was a large shareholder and his Imperial/Nord offsprings hold influences power in some holds.

So I'm pretending I'm on my way home from Cyrodiil after having completed company business. So I'll be heading towards the biggest east empire trading company office in Skyrim and make up my (back)story as I move along. Anyone have any clue where I should be going?

I'm pretty sure I read about an EEC building somewhere in Skyrim, but unfortunately I just can't remember where it is at the moment. Perhaps you might want to try Solitude, which is stated to be the Headquarters of the local Imperial Legion in Skyrim.

I'll probably go for a big long trek and hunt down an ice floe. When that inevitably fails and I get pummelled, I'll probably double back and go punch a wolf.

My character has just escaped from being executed by the Imperial legion and eaten by Alduin, the first thing he will want to do is have a drink at the nearest tavern and have a well-earned rest. :)

I don't know yet, I'm not going to make any plans before I start playing. I'll probably just look around for something interesting and then head in that direction.

Some variation of this:

I think I'm going to follow the White River North, then turn NW to Whiterun. Cash out and grab a cab to Windhelm. Hang out and do a side quest or two. Cash out and grab a cab to Dawnstar. Do a few side quests, cash out and walk to Winterhold. Cash out, checkout the College at Winterhold... maybe join and do 2-4 quests. Cash out and grab a cab to Solitude.

Maybe then I'll start the MQ.

At first I will try to let the game lead me by following the obvious clues. But eventually I will go AWOL and who knows where I'll end up.

Honestly I'm going to finish off the infamous dragon claw quest so that the rest of the world is a mystery to me after that.
