Why hate on the MQ?

It's not so much that I put off doing the main quest, it's that I like doing it all slowly, in Oblivion I started off doing about two or three parts of the main quest, and then I'd go off for about ten or so hours doing other things, like side quests and exploring before I'd return and do a few more parts, and then go off again, I remember in one of my play throughs I finished the main quest at just about 100 hours even, even though I had started it kinda early, I imagine I'll likely do the same with Skyrim, I just like taking my time and doing it all at a slow and easy pace, of course I role-play through out the whole thing too.

some people hate on the MQ of oblivion.

others see the MQ of oblivion and morrowind as okay but love the sandbox element of the game. you can always do the mainquest. it does not go away.

In both Morrowind and Oblivion I mostly held off on the main quest. I find in RPGs in general, I like to get every every every single possible side quest done. sometimes in MQ, you close off side quests when you further the plot.

my game plan for skyrim is: wait and see. I think I will probably ignore the main quest for awhile. I would like to find the thieves guild and if they have alot of quests, etc...do those first.

different chracters of mine would have different goals. I usually play a thief or mage to run around the world and try everything. if I want to just do the mainquest, or focus on it on a playthrough, I sometimes use a more paladin like character...the kind that would not say "so I need to save the world? first let me sight see"

I'm kind of not a fan of main quests in Bethesda games anymore.

I just know my character is going to die of radiation poisoning for no good reason or have Martin come in and steal the glory.

In all likelihood, this time my character's gonna have his heart torn out and thrown into a volcano.

No thanks.
That is a very interesting point. I wonder if they have learned their lesson.
