Why hate on the MQ?

Post » Sun May 13, 2012 5:46 pm

One thing I don't understand is why people don't want too do the MQ right away? Thats what I look forward in TES because its a chance to evolve my char further I can do all the other fun stuff after i'm done, especially since there will be dragons after your done as confirmed by Beth.

From my experience with Oblivion and Fallout (mostly Oblivion) The MQ's aren't that good. So I find doing them pointless. Also most evolution of characters happens during side quests and exploring.

For me, it's because once I've saved the world from a giant, planet-devouring dragon God everything else seems a bit... small by comparison.

I see what you're saying. I think some though just want to explore and not have to follow a given path maybe..

Personally I didn't play the MQ much in Obvlion, mostly because IMO it svcked. All the talk of repetitive dungeons, etc. How about oblivion gates? Couldn't be more uninspired and boring.

I think the MQ in Skyrim looks better integrated in the world with great incentives this time (shouts, etc.). I'm looking forward to it this time around..

This I think. For me the main quest seems like the ultimate goal to complete. I know ES games don't really end, but there is some kind of psychological impact associated with completing the MQ that gives me a feeling of finality. I'd rather not experience that right away, so I tend to put off doing the central story for a while.

That said, in Skyim I have a feeling I'll move it along a little more deliberately if only to get some shouts. Then I'll probably put it on pause and go looking for the Dark Brotherhood and Thieves Guilds for a while.

A good free-roaming game (morrowind) takes you on an exciting main-quest,
but allows you to evolve outside of that quest-line by offering side-distractions in an organic way that doesn't make you feel like you're temporarily leaving the world to fend for itself.

Rather than having you go through the entire main-questline, saving the world, and then leaving you to roam around purposelessly picking up a few random quests.
The latter case wouldn't keep you occupied nearly as long as the first, you'd probably end up re-rolling or giving up on the game entirely.

The Main Quest was a huge factor for determining that Morrowind is far superiour to Oblivion

How is thinking you'll explore and get to know more about what's going on in the province before doing the main quest "hating" on it? Or wanting to level your skills a bit before taking on hero's work?

The Main Quests have always been an aside for me in the TES games, even the MQ's in Daggerfall (which you had to complete in a certain time or the game was over) and in Morrowind (which was a large series of quests). Anyway, MQ's were optional to enjoying the game itself. I have not seen this MQ yet, but once I beat it, I will then decide if it needs to get beaten again on further playthroughs or not. TES games have always been about the world that they are set in.

Once I finish the MQ on one character I feel as though the game is finished regardless of what quests I have left. So I'll wait for a while before doing it.

I just like to do the smalll stuff first because many of the small quests work poorly once you are the hero of the land. The main quests in TES are fine but the real meat to me is the day to day world and the side quests. Only a fraction of my characters in Oblivion and Morrowind actually did the main quest. My real love of TES is living in the rest of the world.

I fall into the category of people that will put off the MQ.

That doesn't mean I won't like, hate, or have no interest in it. To me TES is a sandbox game, do what you want, when you want. That is one the the key selling points of the series for me. I enjoy endlessly wandering around for hours on end, sniffing the flowers, talking to people, doing side quests, exploring etc. I see no reason that I need to blow through the MQ first thing (from a gameplay standpoint, don't give me this "your supposed to save the world why would you want to wait?" garbage) that may be how you play and that's fine but it is not how I play.

Spoiler. You can't.

When I finish the MQ I will have felt like I have beaten the game. And I do not want that. I want to experience it as much as possible.

Based on the opening gameplay for Skryim, I'd say the main quest is going to be pretty damn awesome.

exploration and leveling in these types of games are the main draw for me...quests not so much..quests usually involve a lot of talking and that takes time away from looting and exploring..

This sums it up for me. Although sometimes it feels a little strange, like in Oblivion Martin tells you

"We're all doomed! The gates open everywhere, Daedra pour into the world!
The end is near, so hero, be quick and get me these things so we may stop evil from devouring the world!"

You: "Ah well, okay, But I have to do some very important work for the fighters guild first. You know, there is that old lady in Anvil,
and some of her pet-rats have gone missing. And don't ask me about all that stuff the mages guild want from me at the moment...

Martin: "Alright, I'm gonna speak with Merunes that he may delay the invasion a bit. Just tell us when you're ready! See ya!"

But this problem occurs in almost every RPG I know...especially the Bioware ones
(Still I am glad the Darkspawn are so polite to wait till I finished all sidequests!)

This, "oh, so you're the guy that saved the world? Ok, you're now a footpad in the thieves guild, welcome, go race this beggar for a book."
But in Morrowind it made sense to be side tracked, infact you had to, and i looked forward to beeing able to continue the MQ.
In Oblivion, well... felt like i had to focus on it, and not to mention i didn't like it at all, i played that game every now and again for like 5 years, i've completed the MQ once, and that was last year...

I don't really think that people hate the main quest. It's just that very few people would play a Bethesda game for the story.

Most people think it'll be just like Oblivion's. Personally I'm going to do the MQ first so I don't have to stare at it every time I go into the journal or get chased by npcs begging for help. :obliviongate:

Because there's so much more to TES than the MQ! I'll surely be doing it at some point, but why would I rush myself to finish the main quest when I can spend 100 hours doing completely different stuff?
