I don't hate pop music. I just greatly dislike the majority of it. It's much like anything else in life: you'll enjoy it, someone else won't, and others just don't care either way. As a musician, I've explored a wide-range of genres, from pop, jazz, metal, rock, blues, country, electronica, industrial, and more. I've found something in everything that I've enjoyed, be it simple or complex. When you are creating music, first and foremost, you should be enjoying yourself. Even if the music isn't highly expressive or dealing with deep emotions or experiences, just creating it and experiencing the joy of it is enough to relieve some people of stress, and that's all they need. The same goes for people who listen to music. Not everyone wants to delve into the depths of their soul and discover the deepest, darkest secrets they didn't even know they held. Some people just want a fun beat and a catchy melody.
But, there is a fine line between someone who creates simple, fun music, and someone who pours their heart and soul into the words and music they craft. There is a fine line between corporate-funded producers writing basic I-IV-V progressions and finding a cute guy / gal to provide their image and their voice to autotune into key over their synthesized beats, and ...well, an artist.
One deserves far more respect and admiration in my eyes than the other. Justin Bieber deserves no respect or admiration in my eyes. Nor do a great number of pop artists. Because they're nothing special to me, they aren't unique, and they're more often than not just very good actors and actresses. What it comes down to, is their music has a time and a place, and to me, that's in crowds, at parties, etc. Where everyone in the room is guaranteed to enjoy the beat and have fun. Much like pop music (or even music in general) always has been.
This the generation of IDOL, its about what you look like and how you present yourself, not your talent, how many singers now can actual hold a note, maybe they can do the whitney houston wharble, because she couldnt hold a note, one of the best things i ever saw which said it all was a judge on idol when they were doing the rehearsals, this one guy who had a magnificent voice, could hold a note, was going to a music college learning to sing, but they said your so talented but dont fit the mould, its not about talent its about image, beiber being a good example and this Australian kid, dont know he's name dont care, talentless but he's a beiber clone. If im drunk im as talented as any singer around.
Oh, the Idol shows? American Idol? All it's spin-offs? Disgraceful. As you said, it is based upon image and fitting a certain "sound". That poppy, mainstream sound, that "sounds good to everyone" sound. It doesn't celebrate or encourage originality, creativity, innovation, or appreciate anyone with a distinct voice. But that's also nothing new. Singers, especially in classical singing, have always been expected to sound a "certain" way, and any other way would be "bad" or "wrong". Disgraceful. Everyone and anyone with vocal cords can sing. Music is not for specially chosen people. It's for everyone.
