Why do we hate those who sing pop music?

Post » Sat May 12, 2012 10:14 pm

Bandwagon hate. A good amount of the people who hate on beiber have never heard his music.
Agreed. I don't think 'bandwagon hate' for music is all bad, though, as we do many similar things to convey who we are. Someone who says "I hate Justin Beiber" leads me to believe they're, at least partially, the kind of person I've observed who say "I hate Justin Beiber". It's just part of being human, and as much as I try to 'judge slowly', I can't help but think people who hate on Justin Beiber, instead of sharing their music interest, are immature and insecure.

As for the OP, it's not the singers, but the fans. I assume people who listen to pop are rather dull, without a real sense of who they are. I take refined musical taste, and openly sharing it, as a sign of maturity - they found out what they like, explored it, and aren't embarrassed to share it with you. The opposite would be "anything but [insert genre here]", usually the genres being rap or country.

Sweeping generalizations are fun, aren't they? :P

I had to find out who this Justin Beiber is so I just searched I found a photo of him - he's a really cute kid. I would not object to my teen daughter putting up his poster or listening to his singing. Personally I can't handle listening to him but 'hate'? of course not.

Hate is an overused word like love. "oh I hate cheeseburgers" "Oh I love cookies"
both words should almost always be switched for 'dislike' or 'like' with 'strongly' added if need be..
Hate should be reserved for phrases like "I hate violence" or "I love my girlfriend".

I strongly dislike the image of over-hyping and artificial marketing Justin Bieber represents.

That's a valid point, my dad actually got into Justin Beiber - he's far too out of this generation's loop to have any bias or humility - because he thinks he's a really talented kid, as far as his acoustics go. The reason I feel 'hate' applies here is evident in his videos on Youtube, or most music videos on Youtube for that matter, as his dislike is spread and fervent throughout the internet, shared by literally millions of people. A collective dislike is effectively hate, right?

This the generation of IDOL, its about what you look like and how you present yourself, not your talent, how many singers now can actual hold a note, maybe they can do the whitney houston wharble, because she couldnt hold a note, one of the best things i ever saw which said it all was a judge on idol when they were doing the rehearsals, this one guy who had a magnificent voice, could hold a note, was going to a music college learning to sing, but they said your so talented but dont fit the mould, its not about talent its about image, beiber being a good example and this Australian kid, dont know he's name dont care, talentless but he's a beiber clone. If im drunk im as talented as any singer around.

I don't hate pop music. I just greatly dislike the majority of it. It's much like anything else in life: you'll enjoy it, someone else won't, and others just don't care either way. As a musician, I've explored a wide-range of genres, from pop, jazz, metal, rock, blues, country, electronica, industrial, and more. I've found something in everything that I've enjoyed, be it simple or complex. When you are creating music, first and foremost, you should be enjoying yourself. Even if the music isn't highly expressive or dealing with deep emotions or experiences, just creating it and experiencing the joy of it is enough to relieve some people of stress, and that's all they need. The same goes for people who listen to music. Not everyone wants to delve into the depths of their soul and discover the deepest, darkest secrets they didn't even know they held. Some people just want a fun beat and a catchy melody.

But, there is a fine line between someone who creates simple, fun music, and someone who pours their heart and soul into the words and music they craft. There is a fine line between corporate-funded producers writing basic I-IV-V progressions and finding a cute guy / gal to provide their image and their voice to autotune into key over their synthesized beats, and ...well, an artist.

One deserves far more respect and admiration in my eyes than the other. Justin Bieber deserves no respect or admiration in my eyes. Nor do a great number of pop artists. Because they're nothing special to me, they aren't unique, and they're more often than not just very good actors and actresses. What it comes down to, is their music has a time and a place, and to me, that's in crowds, at parties, etc. Where everyone in the room is guaranteed to enjoy the beat and have fun. Much like pop music (or even music in general) always has been.

Oh, the Idol shows? American Idol? All it's spin-offs? Disgraceful. As you said, it is based upon image and fitting a certain "sound". That poppy, mainstream sound, that "sounds good to everyone" sound. It doesn't celebrate or encourage originality, creativity, innovation, or appreciate anyone with a distinct voice. But that's also nothing new. Singers, especially in classical singing, have always been expected to sound a "certain" way, and any other way would be "bad" or "wrong". Disgraceful. Everyone and anyone with vocal cords can sing. Music is not for specially chosen people. It's for everyone.

Someone seeking attention. Lots of pop stars do it. The gimmicks are for attention, plain and simple. I suppose it's compensation.

Pretty much, see if any of it looked appealing then maybe it'd rephrase calling her a weirdo but no. How she parades herself like some sort of six symbol or whatever is almost disgusting, shes not even attractive post-Poker Face and her figure is just flat yet she runs around her videos half naked like there's something to look at and admire

I suppose for some people, the celebrity status alone is attractive. For me? Nah. Narcissism isn't attractive in the slightest bit. Flaunting your body on television like it's an open house isn't attractive, either.

Yep, pretty much. That's also commonplace amongst celebrities and pop stars. Guess you can't blame 'em, though, huh? Since everyone practically worships them, I imagine it's hard not to feel so special. Although, Charlie Sheen was close to setting a record for extreme narcissism, recently. But he did it in a way that amused me, so I can't complain.

Yeah I guess they can't be blamed for doing weird stuff when it pays off for them, its the reptitivness of it thats somewhat annoying. I guess that's why we get more than one channel on TV and a remote to change it, goodbye 4th repeat of The Simpsons this week.

The bieber hate just works great for advertisemant, people get well jelly of a squeaky now right rich teen

You realise not everyone has the same view on what is or is not sixy ? I new a girl who didnt have a big chest, she was kinda pale too, but she still looked hot imo.
So thats the exact opposite of what it seems is poplar in society (big boobs and a tan).

Anyway I hate them for similar reaons, the others you mentioned just try and show of their looks, while gaga goes for the more "look how much of a freak I am" approach. Its nothing to do with their musical talent, they just get so much attention because of their image. Gaga annoys me more however becuase she apparently tells people to be themselves, yet she drasticly changed herself (compare vids before she became "lady gaga" to her now) for profit.

a lot of people who listen to pop are too lazy to search for other kinds of music. they just like whatever they are served. and pop is like hollywood movies, generic, mainstream, predictable and boring. plus autotune seems to be a part of the "pop-sound" nowadays. it's much more fun to have a special musical taste.

woooow slow down zardoz, you don't even dislike pop
no but i know a lot of people think like this

Oh yeah of course everyone has different tastes whether its a hot body, big ass, good looking face, nice hair and the way they act etc. I know many girls like you say that are hot while slightly pale and big chested but I was meaning from Lady Gaga's perspective I can't see anything admirable about her physically. Her personality is out of the question since no one here (I assume) knows her on a personal level so I can't say shes attractive due to her personality or whatever.

Lady Gaga can look pretty when she's not being a freaking weirdo. However, this line of discussion usually ends with raised eyebrows. One time I said this girl had a nice ass in a movie, camera panned up, BAM it's a guy.

I'm not saying that all pop singers have no meaning in their songs, I respect Lady GaGa because I believe she has a very personal message behind her songs.

I might not particularly enjoy the genre, but I don't hate the people that play it. Most are decent, and to hate them as a person just because they play a genre of music you don't like is pathetic.
Really? She comes off like any other 'major' female popstar of a decade. 70's had Cher (I guess, I dont know much about the 70s culture), 80's had Madonna, 90's- early 00's had Brittany Spears, and now we have Gaga. Dress a little eccentricaly, play the 'I love my fans' game, and instant success.

But I don't actively keep up with her, nor am I interested, but I question whether her songs are deep meaninged. I don't care for her music specifically, but the music itself does have a rather catchy hook note.

If you write nonsensical or overly simplistic lyrics, people will find meaning in them regardless of your intentions.

I hate pop because not just because I dislike the music but because is is rammed down your throat, on tv and at work on the radio the same songs all day every day.

I hate the fact that people like Katy Perry are famous for being good looking rather than having "real" musical talent. If you doubt she is famous for that reason then ask yourself this. Would Susan Boyle be famous if she had Katy Perry's voice and song repetoir....... No, is the answer you are looking for. I resent the fact that really talented musicians are left out in the cold to play only on youtube or in small clubs

I would go into it in more detail but to sum it up, I think pop is shallow, boring and lacks passion. My opinion of course

I don't hate pop music, I like some of it. I'm neutral when it comes to Justin Beiber. He's popular because he does what the boy bands did back in the late 90s. Has a decent voice and girls his age and younger ( and older) find him cute and he sings songs with lyrics that target those who might be romantically vulnerable.

Most pop music of today seems to be just about dancing, well..it's always been somewhat about that. Some of it has a good beat to it and does it's job. The lyrics aren't always something to pay attention too, sometimes they're just filler.

That being said, my favorite kind of pop music is Michael Jackson style.

At least it wasn't Jeffery Star. I'm not even going to disrespect my laptop and google/link his picture here.

You know who annoyed me this morning, Cher Lloyd, her newest song is terrible and I was upset to see how much she looked like Cheryl Cole in the video I was like "Ohh a babe before work..Ah it's you, you've got 30seconds to impress me...." *Flicks to Scuzz*
