Why the menu is a disaster for PC players

Post » Thu May 10, 2012 5:41 pm

I find the UI pretty good, I got used to it by the time I killed my first wolf, i.e. after 30 minutes or so. I find it very intuitive and once you realize you DON'T have to use the mouse it gets even better.

Do we really need 1000 of these threads. We get it all ready! Your not happy.

All this time spent complaining Could be spent playing the game.

Also honestly I have a feeling most are just jumping on the "OMG PC PLAYERS WERE RIPPED OFF!!!" Bandwagon, and that if it wasn't for seeing complaints on the forum you probably wouldn't have noticed...

I can take 10 minutes and express my frustration about the poorly made UI port whenever I want. I don't know if people at Bethesda actually care about this stuff.

It s obviouslyblattant Bethesda didn t even care for PC user.

Dispite it s PC origins, bethesda did not even put a set of quick keys likethere is in Morrowind.

This is very usefull for a streamlined game, where you stay immersed in the game hardly having to bring any menu unless you want to triffle with skills and equipment, then a menu is mandatory.

Having to bring a menu to switch from bow to melle, vice versa, taking a potion or reading a scroll ain t game killer, but almost is.
Another set that would be normal would be a weapon set switch like we have in runes or diablo like games.
These feature is simply the recognition that it is needed to pass from a normal close combat to missile, or close combat to magoc or any combination of it.

That so far are my 2 main grip having to bring a menu for absolutely any change is a real pain.
This aint dificult to bring forward and should be mandatory item in the next patch. I understand that a console have his limitation but thats no excuse to not bring it to PC.

Another inexcusable problem is the key referenciation ingame, if you switch keys to use open menu and the like the function referenciation keys showed ingame remain the same leading to confusion or delay because you don t remember what key you assigned an the game show you the false one.

Fixing this and some other minor problem in gameplay feature the game will attain an even more high score. Independent of anything so far skyrim doesn t deserve any 90 up score because of those failure on PC. One solved figure change.

Someone came up with the answer in this thread http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1260922-important-info-for-pc-users-controls/

People really needed that for rotating an item? No wonder people think the PC UI is bad.

Well the entire "favorites" thing is strictly for the consoles ease of use. However, this is about 2 steps more than what is needed on a PC.

Is there anyway to just simply assign say my healing spell to the a number key? A single keystroke should be all I need to bring up my healing spell rather than having to open a menu... search for it.. assign it to a hand and then exit the menu to go back to playing.

I am seriously puzzled at how you can spend tens of millions of dollars and countless manhours developping a game as vast as Skyrim and then mess up something as simple as the basic user interface. And in a game filled with menus no less. I mean, it's not like the PC is some kind of niche market either since sales are probably already in the millions. Or maye they would like it to be, i don't know.
Also, when your game has mouse acceleration as the default option you must live in an alternate dimension where people hate good controls.

It could get even worse, if developers read these complaints and think "Typical PC gamers, they aren't satisfied with anything". But it's because these things we complain about are so simple, that some of us get more and more frustrated - especially if we are talking about otherwise great games like Skyrim.

Could someone get working on a mod to fix this, please?

The real problem in my opinion is lack of keybinding and inconsistency.

You often have Enter OK/Yes, Tab Cancel/No.

But then you have several menus (such as needless confirmations when smithing) that require you to click the mouse for Yes, No, and there's no shortcut keys!

I was glad when those needless confirmations were taken out of selling, only to find that they didn't take them out of other areas.

And then there's the fact that you can't bind those keys.

If the usage was consistent, and if you could bind everything properly without limits (like the keypad for goodness' sake), then I really wouldn't have very many problems with the UI, except of course that the sizing could be better.

Console gamers are so chill, though. Constantly telling PC gamers to stop complaining and all. So in TES VI they should just use the PC UI on consoles. Boom, no complaints.

I would like to have a UI with a bit more depth than what's offered. Being able to vary the list by, say, armor ranking or weapon damage would be nice. As mentioned, somethings are a pain to click on unless the mouse pointer is just right where it needs to be...

And I just can't figure out how to go exactly where I want in the perks constellations without backing up, moving right, scrolling forward, etc. to get to the exact perk I want to look at. It's almost always a bit of a fumble.

I am mostly getting on with it OK

With the exception of putting items into containers, which is a complete nightmare. OK so you press the e key or click LMB to remove 1 item from a container, but when you are interacting with a container but in your carried items part of the inventory the e key or LMB does not put 1 item into the container - it uses the item - either equips it or eats it. So e key or LMB to take an item out of a container, and r key to put an item into a container and hope you don't forget and accidentally try to use the mouse to store items, it's ridiculous and the opposite of intuitive.

The first time I got storage I actually ate every single ingredient in my inventory when I wanted to store them, because LMB eats the items instead of storing them. And I've done it about 3 times now, because the way it is set up is not intuitive. You shouldn't have to save before trying to store inventory items in a chest because there's a risk of doing it wrong!!!!

there are some bugs with it too duno if consoles get the same but if you remap keys the favorite item key does not change... well the display for what the favorite does not.
Also binding mouse key to PoV change can't be used for favorite or that's the key it used before now I can't seem to get any item favorited...

The above is just midly annoying however this is one game where switching on the fly seems a big deal like from one spell to another and having no selection into which hand goes what is frustrating at times.

Your problem seems to be that it wasn't what you wanted so its bad.

Just be adaptive and flexible to learning a new system.

The problem is that Skyrim is just not designed to be useable with a keyboard & mouse. In many cases the mouse flat out does not work with the UI.

I spent $70 for a wireless 460 controller and receiver (went to three stores and none had a wired controller) just to play a $60 game on PC. The only other game I've ever done something like that for was a flight simulator.

I think it's fair to say that much in the interface isn't exactly intuitive.

Ofcourse they will. In the next Bethesda game they'll have M'aiq say "M'aiq hears some people like to play on something called a PC. M'aiq thinks these people should go drown themselves and donate the money to Bethesda Softworks"

I just don't understand some of these decisions they made, it's like they just barely made it work and never thought about it again leaving us in the dark.
That seems to be the case for a lot of the mechanics in this game.

Menu is fine for me, took a bit to adjust to but now I think it's better than Oblivions UI
Mouse and keyboard both work for navigating for me.

NEWSFLASH!

Okay, I did some digging and research and you CAN actually use hotkeys. First you have to put the weapon or spell in your favorites and THEN press the 1-0 keys from that menu to hotkey it.

Not a total fix for the UI, but its a definite improvement. I tried it with magic and it works SO much better. I might actually play a mage now that I don't have to pull up a menu EVERY time I need to switch spells.

I really don't think it is that bad. I admit it could be more versatile, though.

I'm mostly an mmorpg player and use mouse turn all the time for pvp. So, I'm used to controlling everything else with my keyboard. So, the UI for me is not very difficult or inconvenient. Yes, there are some things that could be better, but it really isn't that terrible.
