Why the menu is a disaster for PC players

Post » Thu May 10, 2012 7:29 pm

I would be fine with the size of the text and low amount of stuff on the menu if clicking with the mouse worked more than 40% of the time.

For example, why does the character say the wrong dialogs when we deliberately he the cursor over another option. Why do we need to press back or click several times to change root menus (apparel, weapons) when we have the sub menu open (steel sword, hunting bow)?
This.

This so damn hard.

That's the one thing that's been bugging me. That and the fact that the bald head option is glitched so part of the back of the head is missing.

I've gotten used to the PC interface and all, but I still haven't figured out how to rotate items in the inventory.

Anyone?
press C.

But yeah I don't even use the mouse in menus for this game. I use wasd and 'e' for everything, because using a mouse is buggy.

Your cursor will be directly over an item, but the game will still be highlighting the item below or above it because you moused past it too fast.

I'm totally used to it now and have no problem with it. The only thing that's buggy is when you read a book, when you return sometimes the mouse doesn't work for that menu.

That, and sometimes I confuse the E with the F because in a lot of games it's F to do stuff.

The UI was designed for console, and they never really did create a UI specifically for the PC. As such, I am getting tired of gamesas designing the Elder Scrolls games from the ground up around the console, and not the PC. Not since Morrowind have we ever seen a traditional item menu system... You know, where you drag and drop items into slots... I miss that.

I was hoping for Skyrim to give me a shot of much-needed old-school PC RPG gaming nostalgia, but instead all I got was a frown. :(

If that was too hard for you to understand, gamesas....

PC: Master Race
Console: Unwashed Masses

It makes more sense to design your game solely for the PC master race and create two separate styles of UI's. That way, it doesn't feel like you guys weren't making a real effort for the PC version. (It felt like this for Oblivion, too...seriously, learn your g'damn lessons...)

The fact that the PC ui is bugged and the mouse is a software mouse is just insulting. I'm fine with how the UI looks, but the skill tree navigation using a mouse is ridiculous and having the wrong objects selected when using a mouse is annoying. I often have to re-cursor over items and dialogue choices to make them highlight properly.

I'm surprised they even put in quicksaving. That's the only pc-like thing in the game.

I don't have a problem with the menu. I like it.
Seems fine for me, and I am on pc.

Here is how i want my inventory, Thank you.

Here we see stats, bags, rag doll and even merchant window in one nice and tidy screen. Instead of the clunky Skyrim inventory where you need to push buttons zillion times, you can just double click items here to equip, buy etc. Of course we are gonna need bigger bag area and sort options but this is only 1024 x 768 size picture. So not that much stuff fits there. See its possible to get most important info on same screen.

Then we need a perks screen that shows all perks of same skill at same time. The current bling bling, all shiney no user friendlyness piece of crap is total no no. They actually hinder you from wanting to look perks by needing you to check them all one by one in allready super zoomed perk tree.

And finally we are gonna need useable spells window. Of course we are gonna need to increase the size a bit. Just add sort spells option or tabs for every school and we are set. Nice and compact spell database without much hassle to see them.

As a long time developer, we learned in the 80's to avoid modal menus -workflow stopping stuff. I would love something akin to WOW's menu system, where the world takes focus, and in a modeless way you can perform menu chores. I just won a battle with 4 bandits and one bandit boss I should have lost because I was able to stop time and quaff potion after potion. Somewhat unrealistic I think. I also don’t think taking someone out of the game like so just to eat an apple is necessary, just have your bag open and right click it! I don't need a 3d spinning mega view of a dang apple! Just don't make me dig through a list to find it - If I have a pack with food in it, let me arrange it and find it. Just sayin'.

I'm sorry to say this but I am indeed already bored to death of having to load a spell, use it, reload a weapon, load a shield, fight a bit, load a spell, use it, reload a weapon and shield, fight a bit more etc.
The combat in Skyrim is extremely boring and tedious, the UI makes it worse than that .. in to downright off-putting. :cryvaultboy:

I was able to fix the mouse issue in the UI by de-selecting the Xbox 360 controller option from the menu. Now the mouse works much much better in the UI, much faster as well it seems.

We do have a problem in this game and it's killing my fun.
I can't even think of going battle mage because i know that i will be fighting the UI and the dragons at the same time.
This is TES FFS why did they screw the controls this bad for us PC gamers.

The reason we play on PC is because we have the ability to customize our game as much as we want.

Another problem is those who CLAIM that they are PC players and find the UI in a good shape.....That's a flat lie.

When will they address this issue?

The GUI or Menus is not too bad, once you get the hang of it. Maybe someday there will be mods to tweak GUIs so players will be more comfortable with.

Solution: Play with a controller. Makes the game way more fun IMO. Skyrim was just not designed with a KB+M in mind.

My only PC gripe is the forced CPU shadow rendering

When in a shop and I click a tiny millimeter above Books only to have it exit to dialogue again is annoying.
Having a map that feels very clunky with it's movement is annoying.
When crafting something and a pop up window comes up I have to move the mouse over to the OK and click it instead of just hitting enter is annoying.
Scrolling through the perk trees is incredibly annoying and frustrating.

I love the game and the only complaint I have so far about it is the menu interface, but it's a damn big annoyance too.
They should have done two separete interfaces, one for consoles and one for PC's, cause the PC one screams of consolization and can be tedious to handle.

The problem is not that you cant use them. Its that its [censored] SLOW to do things with this console scroll menu. Its clumsy and time consuming to go around the crap. They said they wanted to streamline the game. Well this is totally unstreamlined ui.
