1) The Swastika was not visually modified by the Germans. However, many modern-day Swastika as well as their counterparts around the world are mirrored in order to differentiate them from their infamous usage.
2) The Bent Cross is a common symbol in other old cultures.
3) The Nazi usage arose from the Indians; it is generally understood that much of the Northern Indian culture was descended from a group known as the Aryans, who are also known to be ancestors of the Greeks. The Greeks formed the basis for much of Roman Civilization and through them, European Civilization and the Indians formed the basis for much of Chinese (and through them, Asian Civilization.) Common thought at that time was that the Aryans had swooped in and conquered and 'civilized' the savage indigenous peoples of Southern India. Also, the Aryans, rather than being dark or middle-toned and dark-haired like either the Greeks or the Hindus, were supposedly blonde-haired and blue-eyed. Because it makes so much sense for Central Asians to look like Scandinavians.
This concept of the Aryans is not taken seriously by anyone who should be taken seriously today; it's considered much more probable that the Aryans peacefully migrated in and intermarried and the two cultures together gave rise to the Great Indian Civilizations past of Northern India. But the Nazis adopted this symbol of Aryan culture (the Swastika represents auspiciousness, a bit more than good luck; auspicious is like a favorite word for describing things of Indian culture) as a symbol of their claim to master race status, in a twisted honoring of the culture that gave us the basis of modern mathematics, Eastern martial arts, etc.
