I wish to NOT use Steam

Post » Wed May 09, 2012 4:01 am

I hear Steam wraps itself around a system like a peed-on, wet nursery blanket. This may or may not be true. I still wish to remove this third party junk as soon as possible - at the moment it seems I can't install the game without it...without this advert-fueled game distributor.

Why am I even looking at Steam currently injecting itself into my computer?

Sincerely

an avid swedish gamer

Such is the way of modern PC gaming. It's a form of DRM and you need it to play, though you can switch to offline mode.

I think steam sounds kind of dumb too. We shouldn't need internet to play a single player rpg. >.>

The majority of gamers embrace Steam however, as I myself do.

Just live with it.

Alot of fans out there not so happy that required Steam to activate and play, that is just plain stupid. Now most of them cant even update the game, good job Bethesda!

The people on these forums do not represent the majority of gamers however.

If you look at most gaming forums, in fact Steam is treated like the holy grail or something. Such as the massive rage that BF3 wasn't on steam. It is funny seeing two different extremes.

I thought it was in the nature of modern gaming that game hubs who get credit card information, keys, passwords, mail addresses and security questions are the main targets for the hacker community. I have a game, I'd love to play, now I'm looking at STEAM in my systray that previously held a volume control and nothing else - because I run a very clean gaming system.

Can I play if I remove every trace of STEAM? I assume I have the game content on the dvd.

You need Steam to play. You need Steam running in the background to play. This has been known for quite some time. Steam, BTW is a great program. I have all of my games tied to it and, you do not have to store any personal info in it if you wish not to.

I guess you frequent different places than I do. I can tell you face to face its about 50/50 with my daughter's college friends and 60/40 against with my advlt friends ( with the IT guys REALLY hating it) and nobody is just neutral. I guess all this would have been solved with a choice about Steam which is what the spirit of TES is all about.

I have no option to do what this says. Delete local content does not exist. Perhaps I need to botch a STEAM install first? STEAM is not responding so I can't test that yet.

You can't play without Steam.

This is wrong! Just go to the steam directory on your hard drive(after you've installed the game and set your graphic settings), then go to steamapps\common\skyrim and start the game with the TESV.exe.

No Steam needed after you've activated and installed the game.

You are also able to start steam in offline mode. This is also no problem and you can be sure that there will be no data collection or something like this.

I am awed by your patience with saying that over and over again without rancour. If there were some sort of kudo or reputation system I would give you some.

Agree with you. I'm waiting for the next great release - Diablo 3 - and I have discovered you need to play this online, too, although it's not an MMO sigh (but you can party with other players).

Doesn't that just launch Steam and then the game?

I'm right there with you, mate. It's a piece of junk and I hate having it infest my PC, however, it's a necessary evil these days.

My best recommendation is to install steam, install your game, and then take a good hard look at the steam settings and disable EVERYTHING! Then you just have to manually update Skyrim via steam whenever a new update comes out.

Here's hoping steam will die a quick but painful death.

I think you need Steam later for updates/patches. Not sure.

Haha, junk, you're kidding me right? It's the only thing keeping PC gaming going, the biggest digital distributor on the planet. Get off your high horse and start thinking from a community perspective. I've proudly been a user of Steam since 2004 and not once have I felt let down. I've purchased 270 games on it and it's the only place I trust now.

No, only running the launcher will start Steam.

I'm sorry your trust can fit in such a small place.

It's a matter of independence to me, and the choice of what I install on my PC. I've played hundreds of games on, without ever needing steam, and now, suddenly everything has to go through friggin steam. I bought the disc, I paid for, now leave me alone and let me play. What if I didn't have an internet connection? I wouldn't even be able to play. See my point?

The Russian version doesn't have Steam apparently. So either deal with Steam or learn Russian.

Steam is nowhere near as bad as the Diablo 3 system though. Steam requires you to be online to activate the game when you install it, but then you can play in offline mode if you want. Diablo 3 requires a constant working internet connection even for single player and will kick you out of the game if your internet drops.

Hope in one hand, barf in the other....see which one gets filled first.

For better or worse, Steam isn't going anywhere soon. I'm no really devoted fan, and I feel bad for folks that struggle with it, but for the most part I've never had an issue with Steam.

Oh look, I have a STEAM folder and I've not even seen a Bethesda logo yet.

Yes, I had to first botch an installation in order to get the option to delete local content.

It still isn't installing. It tells me STEAM is too busy. Again: why am I looking at STEAM?

No, I don't see your point. Set Steam to offline mode, and voila, you don't need internet! How hard was that?

Agree, but the point is with a single-player game, we shouldn't need the internet.
