You and Lady Luck

I think I'm lucky. I don't really know though... Maybe I'm just fortunate.

I too ascribe to the "luck is a bunch of bahooey" field of thought, so iunno. I don't keep track of my misfortunes and fortunes, I just know I have some of both, just like everyone else.

So average luck, I guess?

Edit: Sure are a lot of people who attest to having bad luck, though, I wonder if negative bias has a place in this?

I wouldn't call my situation just a case of negative bias, although I am rather cynical and pessimistic about things(I prefer the term realist :P) I think it's safe to say that someone has bad luck when they finally get a stroke of good luck, they are more suspicious than happy. Good luck only exists to distract me from the incoming bad luck, so I make sure to watch out. Plus, if there are 5 things in a day that requires chance and one was good luck, I can narrow it down to which part of my day will have bad luck. One less thing to worry about.

In games where chance is a huge factor, I never seem to win. So in lotteries, the casino, etc. I never made more money then I invested. So in that way, I am not lucky at all.
On the other hand I was born in one of the most prosperous countries in the world, had a great childhood, have never suffered hunger, a serious desease or any deaths in my immediate surroundings and I now have a nice job that pays the bills and lets me have a good life without any serious problems.
In conclusion: Lucky? No. Fortunate? Yes.

I'm incredibly lucky. I have a wonderful boyfriend, a fantastic job that I sort of 'fell into' and amazing friends and family. I smile a lot and am probably the happiest person I know.

From my point of view, luck has no play on the outcome of any situation, though (because it's just a word we use to describe the outcome.) It's not like we're given a daily allotment of luck; "You can have no more than 4 good things happen today."

What negativity bias is, though, say you had 2 bad things and 2 good things happen to you in a 6 hour time period, of about the same magnitude. You would more likely than not believe that you had bad luck for that 6 hour time period. Negative events tend to cloud over positive events in perception, for some reason, sometimes to the point we actually start to feel like the positive events may have been neutral, or that we forget about them.

When people mention good/bad luck, they aren't necessarily referring to luck as some kind of tangible, cosmic force. Like you said, it's just a word to describe the outcome. It just happens to be an entirely accurate word there's no point in complaining about the usage of. While odds and coincidence have verifiable scientific factors behind them, they can still fall in your favor beyond your control. The simple fact that you're NOT given a set allotment means that statistically, most people are not going to have an even 50/50 split of fortunate and unfortunate coincidences. A certain person may have a lifetime that heavily leans in the unfortunate direction. I don't see how it would be "a bunch of bahooey" to describe that person as unlucky.

Aye but this person is stating their luck to be as a daily occurrence thing, wherein if they have good luck early in the day, they can 'predict' later in the day that they'll have bad luck, which seems a little gambler fallacy to me.

I know it's like you've described but I guess I don't put much effort in caring :P

When I was born, I put all my stat points into luck.

But sadly, I have yet to encounter a situation where my high luck stat would've given me something good...

I find this usually holds true, too. It often requires a lot of work, though, which can be stressful; and then when I do finally resolve a situation, someone will say to me "oh, you're so lucky!"

While I do use the word in expression, I don't rightly believe in luck as some supernatural driving force of the universe. But I do believe every event or situation is based on probability and equations as well as personality. Doesn't matter how much you like that one cute girl, if your face looks like a piranha who got whacked in the face with a hammer, it isn't 'bad luck' that backfired the situation.

I tried hitting on Lady Luck one time, it ended up being really awkward, so now she avoids me whenever she can.

Extremely unlucky am I to the point I can predict where the failures shall occur. Also, it doesn't help if I need something done in stages. If my master plan needs 8 stages to be executed, 2 or 3 are bound to go wrong and if they don't, then stage 8 is guaranteed to fail. It's a piss off because I can't avoid it. I can lmake plans, go to bed, wake up, and predict exactly why and which things are doomed for failure, despite the fact that it looks all good.

This is me with a few minor differences: I declare myself neutral instead of unlucky, and I tend to create "sub stages" to counter possible screws up of "main stages".

I use to consider myself extremely lucky at playing card games. I don't really believe in luck anymore. I think it is myself that puts me into a position that could be considered back luck and ultimitely it would be my own fault. Good luck just means I took an educated shot at something reasonably expecting it to possibly work.

I'm rather lucky. I come into a lot of situations where my willpower/thoughts end up coming true. Like, for example, catching a late bus and having to walk three miles in the rain to my house when I'm already exhausted and thinking of someone that I know has a car and how swell it would be if I would be able to get a ride. Couple minutes later that person pulls into the lot next to me telling me to get in.

Can't stand the word 'lucky'. I prefer 'fortunate'.

My son just won two tickets from a radio station to go see Buddy Guy on June 29 !
I was thinking that he and his wife will have a great time. A call came later and he said she doesn't want to go because she'll have to work the next day and would I like to go instead?

It's a roleplaying term, for rolling a 20 on a 20-sided die. Was joke.
