Do you enjoy any 'bad' or 'poorly recieved' games?

Post » Sun May 13, 2012 12:39 pm

Lets admit it it, 'bad' games is a subjective idea. Even if a million people hate a game, there's sure to be at least a few hundred who enjoyed it.

So what about you ladies and gentlemen, have you ever liked a poorly reviewed game?

I do, for me Naughty Bear and the Godfather games are great games. (Despite the poor VA and clunky design of the Godfather games)

Mirror's Edge wasn't very well reviewed IIRC but I adore it.

I enjoyed both, I bought Naughty Bear for my girlfriend and she hated it so I gave it a try and loved it.

For me, It would be Hunted: The Demon forge. I played it for the first ten minutes and wasn't impressed -- Jiggling boobs, Thong armour, close ups to the elf's rear end every time she goes through a door, poor visibility in most areas, a bald tattoo'd guy who speaks to the elf as if she's a dog "Girl" this and "Girl" that. The bald guy always worrying and stuff, even though he's a 7ft tall mountain of muscle. The personalities and objectification really put me off that game, alot. But then I decided to try it again after a while of letting it gather dust, and I have to say that the combat and some game mechanics really did redeem it for me. All I have to do is ignore the talking, thong armour and dike head bald guy and the game is playable for me now.

I don't look at reviews so I have no idea if I like a badly rated game.

Brink is a fantastic game and one of the best multiplayer shooters I have had the pleasure of playing. I wish people actually played it.

Alpha protocol. Gameplay reminds me of mass effect one, only choices actually matter. Yet ME1 got lots of praise, AP got lots of hate.

considering personal opinions are..personal..i could not care less nor do i try to find out others opinions on a game before i judge for myself, unless it's a full price tag then i'll ask someone i know if it's actually fun, but if it looks good i'll usually buy it anyway..

I really loved Alpha Protocol, as well. One of those games where I can see it's flaws (I really had a hard time with some of the perks - and being forced into a Boss Fight shoot-out all the time, when you'd grown used to playing a stealth game, was just wrong.) But I thought it was a good example of a game in dire need of a sequel - sometimes the first game comes out, and you need another one to kind of work out all the kinks.

Assassin's Creed, I think, is another example of that - where it needed a sequel to really iron out and refine some of the gameplay concepts.

Loved the dialog in that AP, though - and of course all the choices you could make, and different ways things would pan out. Doesn't look good for a sequel, but we can always hope.

Yeah, I like lots of games that for some reason had terrible reviews. It is possible however, that my expectations were so low because of said reviews, that I was impressed with whatever I got.

Oh it had flaws, the boss fights were bad. First time through I was glad Brayko glitched and he didnt attack. That damn knife.

They did ask SEGA about a sequal, SEGA said no, but still holds the IP. Bloody SEGA.

I know Avellone said a sequal would expand on G22. I loved those guys, I want to know more about that locket Sis gave me. G22 was one of my favorite things in the game, rivaled only by the bro that is, Steven Heck.
And yes a sequal would be great, allow them to fix lots of the problems, make a great game. Hopefully they get to try with AP again in the future.

I actually liked AC more than any of it's successors.

Earth defense force while being stupidly cheesy is still a great game to play with others.

Yep, I adore Monster Hunter. The entire series, but the difficulty ramp is way too much for even your average "hardcoe" player. Not much games out there that get harder, Dwarf Fortress for one. Perhaps Dark Souls, but I've never played it. I've heard it and Monster Hunter are equally as hard in different ways.

Yes alot of games which have gotten mediocre or bad ratings have turned out quite enjoyable. I've noticed alot of times when reviews mention its the same old same old without bringing anything new to the table that its a good sign i will like the game. Some of the ones which have not rated well but give me great joy are:

Serious Sam 3
Painkiller expansions
Hellgate London
Singularity
Wolfenstein- the latest one done by Raven Software
Might And Magic 7
Bulletstorm
Divinity II Ego Draconis
The Haunted, Hells Reach
Supreme Commander 2
Elven Legacy
Dragon Age 2
Crysis 2- may have gotten great reviews but not from the so called hardcoe fans stuck in yesterday mode

I've plated a lot of games that have simply done poorly - but in general the reviews I've read overall tend to agree with my own feelings. I don't usually put much stock in actual "ratings" for a game, but for the most part (with what reviewers I care about) I'll agree with most of their points. Even a game that I really enjoyed, I'll agree could have been better, or understand why it only got an "average" review. For example, I really like Beyond Good and Evil, and it was well "received" by all accounts - it just wasn't a commercial success.

As far as this topic seems to go, there is one other game that (while I can't remember what the reviews tended to say about it) wasn't terribly well-received by fans of the series; though I had a lot of fun with it and found it to be a very satisfying playthrough.

I actually liked Deus Ex: Invisible War quite a bit, even if I do tend to run into a number of series fans who feel differently about it. I actually thought there was a lot of compelling storytelling going on there. It's been some time since I've played it, but there were some memorable characters that I actually cared about as the game went on.

As an example, there was the one friend you'd keep bumping into who was getting more and more cybernetic enhancements each time you met him; until by the end even he was beginning to regret it and wonder what all of this was doing to his remaining humanity. Or the AI that befriends you in the guise of a holographic pop star - and then when you actually meet the real person it turns out to be just a spoiled brat.

And I also liked how you could get conflicting mission objectives, which you could often change at will, and even during the mission itself.

Of course, it's too bad that - like all Deus Ex games - no matter what you did, it still came down to a "choose your own ending" at the end of the game. Which kind of takes the impact out of anything you thought was going to be a meaningful choice.

I don't think it was everything I could have ever wanted out of a game - but I did find it compelling to play through.

Oblivion and FO3 were about as badly-received as you can get in some quarters at least, but I loved both of them! I suspect that's not quite what you were getting at though. Offhand... dunno, really. I think most games that I can think of have been in a similar situation where some groups of people hated them and others rated them highly; probably the closest is DA2, which I confess is something I've also complained about a lot, but I actually really quite enjoyed the bits that didn't annoy me!

Most likely. I don't really pay attention to reviews so I don't really know, except for http://ps2.ign.com/objects/822/822478.html from a while back.
