Do you fast travel?

Post » Sat Dec 17, 2011 7:27 am

I usually use it for porting quickly to a place I've been if I've walked close to it, but have gone the wrong path - or to go back and sell things quickly, but even then I'm now more just running from A to B, stopping off at inns for food, or a bed if it's dark outside.

I feel like you have to since the game was designed with that in mind. Quests usually force you to go all around the map, there are few "local" quests.

I try to avoid it but after 150h and 4 characters, it's hard not to use it.

I'd like to see it done better though. Distance traveled should have an influence in your decision. I mean, clearing a quest near Riften and then selling loot in Solitude should have a cost of some sort. For example:

1) I'd like to see something like the early Fallout games had, where you'd see your progress on the map (it wasn't instantaneous) and you'd have a chance of random encounters (like you'd have if you were actually walking places);

2) Or they could keep it this way but justify it better in the world, like having a teleportation spell where perks would allow you to travel more distance at once, or a shout where more words would increase distance (with the cooldown avoiding you to keep using it over and over again).
Teleportation sounds good, but it would also break some game elements and some story elements most likely. Being able to teleport changes the way the world works. Having a downside to fast traveling as opposed to just walking somewhere I don't really get. If you're implying a downside/timer on traveling somewhere then I'd have to disagree since that just breaks the open world aspect and puts limiters on what you need to do.

I dont fast travel.... once you start it kinda goes down hill from there your jes teleporting all the time...

I try to stay within the narritive.... I may use a carrige upon completion of a quest.... but I pretty much travel to destinations on foot. If theres a town or city along the way I'll sometimes pop in ( if its night time I'll do some burgell,n) and rent a room at the tavern and head out in the morning....

Yes...same here exactly. Or if I lose my horse I will fast travel so that it returns immediately to my side. I think fast travel detracts from the RP experience greatly. Then, the game becomes a shopping list.

Not really. If it's a case of getting to the top of High Hrothgar you can simply RP that you climbed it.

For people that place enjoyable gameplay on their ability to fill gaps with their imagination, many RP-ers tend to be quite close minded.

I do now , I spent the first 100 hours on foot usually carrying to much, I would rob everything I could and just walk to the nearest town or village. One trip took me 2 hours of actual time not game time, but as I have opened up loads of places just walking I have uncovered every town and village so I port to them and then explore the surrounding area.

Only if i'm under time constraints in real life (like can only play for 1 hour) will i use fast travel.

I might use a carriage once in a while if i don't feel like going from Markarth all the way to Riften, for example.

Save game bloat!

Haven't had that problem that I'm aware of (crosses fingers).

Fast travelling is cheap and a murderer of gameplay hours. I travel the landscape. :3

I don't fast travel. It does take longer, but carriage rides help speed things up. Being a good horse thief doesn't hurt either.

I avoid doing it most of the time, but sometimes if I have to do something like find a shop to buy more potions or find an alchemy table to make some because I ran out, I would fast travel back to town, and back to where I was. Walking back and then back again would be more realistic I suppose, but I would be mostly passing over dead bodies of my victims, and entrances to caves I already cleared.

I fast travel most everywhere. I understand that some people like the feeling of traveling, and I respect that, but it's not for everyone. I much more enjoy dungeon running, and get more than enough exploring in getting to those places I can't fast travel to. It's not like you don't explore at all when you fast travel- you just don't explore places you've already explored...

But again, if that's what you find enjoyable, then by all means, I'm glad it makes you happy. Just try to understand that not everyone plays the game the same was as everyone else, and the fact is, how someone else plays doesn't affect your game at all.

I fast travel to and from selling stuff I get. Otherwise, I am loaded up and slogging along, really wasting time. After I sell my goods, I FT back to where I was--dungeon or whatever--and continue on from there. So, I FT just to unload goods. To FT from one quest to another wrests away much of the excitement of the game. I.e. what the heck is around the next corner?

Had to vote rarely, as I used it before (majority of the game so far). But after patch that eliminates XP hangs, I don't have to anymore. Will probably never use it on my next character, who won't unlock dragons and waits for certain hardcoe mods to come out.

I walk about to discover new places but if I have collected dragon bones our just left a cave crawl and have become overburdened with things to carry then I will fast travel back to my free secret room in the riverwood tavern and store my loot in a chest there. Then fast travel back to the place I was if I still want to carry on exploring the surrounding area. I also fast travel if I need a quick spell book or something. But mostly it's only used to get me back on track again in the game.

I try to avoid it, but sometimes I just don't have the patience to shlep all my stuff back to the nearest town. And, worse, to my only house in Whiterun. It got to be a real pain when I started exploring down by Falkreath and West of there towards god knows where. So many dungeons and ruins to explore, I was hard pressed on space, and I've actually upgraded a fair amount of stamina for my warrior.

The carriage drivers are rich bastards in my game. That only gets me but so far and there is allot of nice little touches in the game you would otherwise miss by fast traveling everywhere.

Sometimes. I never use carriages, I'd rather walk. And when I walk, I explore all things that pop up on my compass.
I was headed back to Riverwood after Bleak Falls Barrow and finally realised that I found myself in Falkreath.

I usually travel to the nearest city and go from there, or simply to sell off my loot. Then I'll walk, or ride. Having a mod making horses 1,5x faster is useful.

i dont like to fast travel, but as the game world is so big, i will if i really cant be arsed with going back and forth down a well trodden road. i much prefer the way they did it in morrowind with the teleportation spells.

My first play-through I power leveled smithing to 100 and enchanting wasn't far behind, all by level 30ish. I fast-travelled to EVERY quest, I never took the long road.

This play-through I rarely (if ever) fast travel, and I can honestly say the game is a million times more enjoyable.

I think it would be cool if, when you create your character, you had to pick yes or no for fast travel working. Then you would have to stick with the choice. Carriages would still be allowed either way.

This is the first Elder Scrolls fl game I've ever tried and I had no idea you could fast travel until I read about it here. I have been either walking everywhere or riding the horse I bought to get from place to place. Even knowing I can fast travel I probably won't use it unless I have occasions later on where I want to go from one side of the map to the other.

I have never used Fast Travel and I never will.

FT really damaged my enjoyment of Oblivion. I vowed to never use FT in Skyrim and I've kept to that promise 100%.
