Do you fast travel?

Post » Fri Dec 16, 2011 11:42 pm

You should add a "carriages only" option, I'd be interested to see how often they're used. I'll be using horses exclusively once I can iron out the stability problems, but for now stick to carriages and walking.

90 hours, haven't used fast-travel once. However, I do occasionally use carriages.

Exactly what I do. Same as in Morrowind with the silt striders.

Fast travel removes the immersion.

I almost never fast travel.

Skyrim is a big, continous land, not just a set of instances and I want to experience that.

Only exceptions are when traveling OOC for screenshots, tests, etc. and when I need to move huge piles of stuff from one house to another.

One of the aspects I find interesting about any fast travel thread, is that people talk about fast travel as if it was possible from the start of the game.

I'm using carriages, but don't fast travel by clicking the icons on the map. Being alchemist, that really helps getting more ingredients :)

I use fast travel, but only because the random wilderness and road encounters are repetitive and boring for the most part. Out of about 100 wilderness encounters, I had one encounter with vampires on the road, 2 encounters with bandits, and the other 95+ were spiders, bears, wolves, sabercats. Extremely boring having to dismount from my horse to fight the same beasts every time. If there were more variety and uniqueness to the encounters, I'd definitely curtail my fast traveling.

I wasn't even counting the plethora of dragons which has taken away the specialness of their encounters.

I fast travel only when necessary, or when the sun (irl) starts coming up and I'm tired :)

I'm not actually sure do you mean fast travel or fast travel with carriage? I voted never because I never use fast travel but I do hire carriage rides sometimes when I'm doing quests.

All the time. Retracing my steps for the umpteenth time for a fed ex type quest is tedious.

I try to avoid it as much as possible, and prefer carriage when practical, but i am glad it's there.

I walked a lot in the beginning until I found 380+ locations, now I fast travel a lot, usually to the nearest city or to a ruin or fort I have already cleared.
Many times there is a dragon at the other end of the fast travel. Last time I was sent to kill a giant, when I got there, there were two dragons (ancient and blood).

How can you stand playing that way? With all the fetch quests from one side of the map to the other you must have a very high resistance to boredom not to menton a lot more time than I.

My fast travel abuse is attrocious! I'll regularly fast tavel back to my house, dump all my stuff / sell my loot then fast travel back to where I was, even if is right on the other side of the map.

I will do it occasionally if I have to keep going back and forth between the same places. Otherwise I only fast travel via the carriages that you can hire outside of major cities, or after I reach a city (i.e. I never fast travel from the middle of no where, or from some small cave/fort/dungeon, etc.)

i assume you mean map fast travel. you should specify that as many hardcoe types dont have an issue with in game fast travel, just the map no cost version.

the only times i use it is if ive hoofed all the way to the other side of the map and forgot something important like those dragon claws for opening crypts. other than that i just use the carraiges or run.

Im still on my first playthrough and 170 hours in. I use fast travel alot since I dont have a whole lot of time play (and yet I have snuck in 170hours, lol). Now that I am done the MQ and the guild quests that I wanted to complete I only use carriges and will do so for any subsequent playthrough. Im glad fast travel is in there but the game is a way better experience playing with no fast travel, you feel so much more connected to the world and discover alot more. I think that one of the reasons people have such a close connection with Morrowind is due to the fact that there is no fast travel.

I'm actually disappointed in myself for selecting yes. I was happier walking around the world and discovering all of the locations to be honest. I keep trying to remind myself that it's the right thing to do.

I think because of all the "fetch" quests, I've become somewhat disenchanted with the roam world aspect. It's a shame. I have to get myself back into the habit of not doing things the easy way.

I fast travel. One thing that they really shouldnt have added to the game is the wagons you can use to fast travel to cities you havent found yet. At least make it very expensive or limit the numbers of cities you can visit Bethesda please

I'm about about 50/50 on fast travel. Right now I am doing the Thieves Guild questline and that requires you to go everywhere. I refuse to walk from Riften to Solitude to do three quests that will probably take an hour combined. There is plenty of the map that I have not explored yet, I think I have 150 or so found locations, but walking across the map all the time gets tedious.

120 hours into the game and I am using fast travel more often to get along routes that I have been on many times before. I always jump on my horse before selecting the travel option, at least that way I feel I am using a travel system - it's not a lot different to using a carriage in that respect.

I have a feeling that the reason a lot of people fast travel is due to looting/encumbrance. I can't for the life of me understand why horses weren't equipped with saddle bags so you could pack a bit of extra loot. I for one don't fast travel, but sometimes it's frustrating that I have to leave good loot behind when I'm way out in the wilderness. A horse really doesn't do anything, you can travel almost just as fast on foot, so it would've been nice if that 1000 gold would've at least bought you a bit of extra cargo space. I sometimes feel tempted to fly back to my house and unload some stuff that I wan't to keep, like dragon bones and other artifacts, not for selling loot, so having a saddle bag for my horse would alleviate that. I know there are mods that increase my encumbrance level, but that ruins the RPG aspect for me. It's crazy enough that I can carry around 5 steel plates on my back while fighting a dragon, sheez.

I have been fast traveling on two of my three characters, primarily because of encumbrance (how many dragon bones can I load Erik up with before he stops wanting to carry them...). I will not, however, fast travel to High Hrothgar/Throat of the World, for the RP value of Being Very Serious About Being Dovahkiin :) So I pop into Ivarstead and run up.
