Do you think dragons are, or were, real?

Post » Sat May 12, 2012 7:17 pm

Today I was driving through a very mountainy part of wales, and the little old lady driving the car said to me "Do you know, that those mountains are the bodies of slumbering Dragons?!". She's said the same thing to me atleast once a month for the last 26 years or so, but since playing far too much Skyrim recently, her words have really made me think.

Throughout history, and throughout the world, Dragons have been spoken of. Would this make you beleive that once upon a time they did infact exist?
Or do you go for the more logical approach that Dragons were just winged Dinosaurs?

Are there any of you out there who really think that maybe there's more to the mythical tales than just myths and that there really are Dragons sleeping deep below the earth close to the core, and that some day they will awaken and rise to the surface to retake the world?

No.

Okay, fair enough. Why though? Why do you think that? I'm not starting a fight I'm just curious as to why you beleive what you do btw :)

Of course. Both the porcupine and the giraffe are direct evolutionary descendants of dragons.

No scientific evidence. IF there was dragons we would have found evidence.

*Someone who apparently can fly* has also been talked about quite a lot throughout history. Same lack of evidence. I have no doubt there have been dinosaurs the size of dragons, who also could fly, but that they'd spit fire and what-not is a bit absurd.

Dinosaurs are the closest thing to real life dragons and are propably what dragons were inspired by, although I have no evidence for that. Just a logical assumption

Hmm, dunno if dragon sized dinosaurs could fly, they would probably be too heavy.

That isn't a great argument when you consider how very little evidence of anything we actually have. Just 300 years ago we didn't even know about dinosaurs or gravity!

Yes.

Because Charlie Sheen said he had dragon blood. And everyone knows Charlie Sheen doesn't lie.

He's banged Bree Olsen, so he has no reason to ever lie.

This is some of my best logic to date.

This and I am also unsure whether there would have been enough oxygen in the atmosphere anyway to power such flight. The energy required to get such a large mass off the ground would have been pretty large

Yeah but now we do have evidence of them, and if we have evidence of creatures that lived millions of years ago I'm sure we could find evidence of dragons :P

Everyone knows the earth is only 4,000 years old and fossils were just planted there by Zardos.

I believe there was more oxygen in the air when the dinosaurs were alive than there is now but I'm too lazy to look that up or link to anything. . .

There was, hence why the insects living at the time were alot larger, however whether there would have been enough to power the flight of a large lizzard I am doubtful

Pterosaurs had wingspans of 33 feet. That's pretty large.

That we cannot know, but when I said dragon sizes it's just smaller than Skyrim dragons. It's mass would mostly comes from it's wings and tail. Even then, I doubt they would actually *fly* as skyrim dragons do, but glide.

PLEASE lets not turn this into some sort of Dragon/Jesus comparison thread!!

Okay, so based on Dinosaurs maybe being how the idea of Dragons came about, how can we really tell whether or not there were any beasts that could breathe fire? If all that remained was bones then all organs and 'ick' that may have explained if this were possible or not would have decayed eons ago?

In the summer I found a dead seagull and gave it a ceremonial funeral in my garden. This winter I accidentally dug it up to plant some bulbs for the spring, and unless I'd known it was a seagull I would never even have guessed that the sad little pile of assorted bits and pieces had ever in life had wings.
it seems that wings are made of a lighter stuff than actual bone, so how do we know that dinosaurs didnt all have very fragile wings made of a lighter organic material?

That's why insects were bigger way back when.

crap! ninja'ed while I was trying to sound smart. No way I'm telling Simone about you Twitch, ferget it! :flame:

Seriously though, I don't think they're laying dormant under the Welsh mountains, but as to why we haven't found any evidence.. maybe they were like elephants, and went somewhere to die, like in deep water. That would wipe out most evidence, wouldn't it?

The correct answer would be that we don't know yet. We cannot immediately dismiss it though as that would be just as unfounded as claiming that they do exist without any substantial evidence.
