PC: Do you use Mods?

Post » Tue Jun 21, 2011 7:52 pm

This of course isn't a germ-free environment which will yield untainted results, but I'm throwing this out there anyway.

Results could possibly be skewed... you could argue anyone involved in a game's forum this far out from release is going to be your more hardcoe player. Still, I'm curious. Be honest.

I think your poll fails to account for the majority of people who install lots of mods for Oblivion.

100-200+ mods is quite common.

At the moment, I'm playing a mod free game. But I usually ran TONS of mods. Everything from new spells (and even spell effects) to new creatures to overhauls to quest chains. UI improvements, graphics candy, you name it, I had it.

I would also point out that "modding" =/= installing a mod that someone else created

Unless I feel the major need for something to be changed, or fixed, ill stick with visual mods. I played stock oblivion for like 500 hours with almost a dozen mods that changed weather, texture packs, skin, hair, eyes.

Then I got a race mod. Only because I thought the little kitty people were adorable.

Fair to say yeah....but downloading a mod, and applying it to Vanilla = modding the game no? maybe better to say Mod Making :D

I counted, just for the sake of this thread (feel special!) just how many mods I currently have active on Oblivion. This is a rough number, since I was only counting active esp files, which there are sometimes a few for a single mod, and sometimes mods like animation replacers and texture replacers do not come with esp files. I only counted mods like MMM and Unique Landscapes once though, despite the tons of esp files active for them.

My very rough total of active mods for Oblivion is 119. I'd say that counts as hardcoe, by the standards of your poll.

I've also made a few minor tweaks here and there to other mods, as well making a mod of my own. I plan on releasing a bunch of mods for Skyrim.

I'll probably finish the game without mods on my first play through, then see if there's any decent mods to chuck on when I play my next one.

Apologies, I wasn't clear. I'm referring to mod users when I say "modders" in this instance.

EDIT: Tried to make the last option more inclusive.

You should edit your post to make that clear, modders mean people that create mods, not use them.

Was going to mention that. I saw a good number of people over on the Eyecandy forums who ran 200+ mods. (Me, I only end up around 40-50. Most of them minor things like clothes, armor, hair....)

edit: just checked. My folder of downloaded mods (I don't nearly use them all at once, and I've deleted some of the larger ones that I'll never use again) is 14GB.

I'm not trying to intentionally exclude any of the ES community - the nature of the question is only applicable to PC users. Again, not a slight against the huge console fan base...

The accepted and widely used terms in this community are;

Modder = maker of mods
Mod User = user of mods

I both mod and use mods.

Based on Morrowind and Oblivion, I'll play the game until I see something I don't like, then I'll either mod it myself or look for a mod to fix it. The only question is how long that will take. With Morrowind, it was easily 100 hours plus. With Oblivion, it wasn't more than an hour or two.

I run a couple of dozen mods on Morrowind and well over 100 on Oblivion.

it depends on the game, the better the game the fewer mods i need. right now im playing fallout new vegas with around 40 mods and morrowind with MGSO (which is a compilation of several graphics mods put together) and a couple of the BTB mods and creatures X. when i was playing oblivion i had over 200 mods on a few occasions simply cause there was so much that i didnt like about the game that i had to change. even with mods i download i have a tendency to heavily tweak them to suit my tastes.

20+? More like 200+ for me. I use all kinds of mods to enhance my game and they provide me with unending replay value and as perfect a game as I could hope for. Hopefully there'll be enough fixes to the gameplay in vanilla Skyrim that I can focus less .esp space on improving lackluster vanilla features and more on entirely new and additional features.

I certainly hope Skyrim won't need that many

If there is an official hi res texture pack, then I will probably only install a few things to start with like

  • Economy mod to increase all merchant prices,
  • some kind of survival mod to require eating, drinking, sleeping,
  • hypothermia mod,
  • infections and diseases
  • something to allow me to continue to earn 1 perk per level from level 51 - theoretical max level (70-80)
  • maybe some magic mods if they have new spell animations or some cool spells
  • vampirism mod to add vampire factions (if there are none)
  • ENBSeries shaders and SSAO if the vanilla version isn't up to snuff
  • Combat overhaul mod (only if vanilla version is not challenging enough on highest difficulty setting) - probably Arwen will make something like this

I will also create a Necromancy magic overhaul mod with new spell tomes, spell animations, NPCs, some quests and possibly a joinable Necromancer faction if there is none in the vanilla game, but this will take a long time to complete.

And later I will try new quest mods and I'm sure eventually there will be huge expansion mods like Neherim and that new Russian mod whatever it's called.
