German and Irish.

Does it get uncounted since we moved to America around the 1700-1800s?

About 1/4 Irish and 3/4 English, there are varying degrees of each on both sides of my family, but that's probably pretty common amongst people on the west coast. Blue eyes and blonde hair seem rarer here, while red hair and green eyes are much more common than normal.

The English side I can roughly trace back to the 1300s in this area, my surname is quite common here as it relates to a landowner that established much of the farming community that the town grew around between 1300 and 1600.

Irish side came to Britain in the 20s if I recall, I did have family who were in the IRA in those days. The branch that remained in Ireland seems to have fallen out of contact when our last pure Irishwoman on our side died in the 1990s. The rest have part English ancestry and are thoroughly anglicised, but for a tendency to anger which seems to stem from the Irish side.

Icelandic, some Norwegian in there I guess since my name is Norwegian.
You disappoint me, I was led to believe that all Icelanders come from the same 6 familes as far back as the 10th century. :P

Hehe, yeah, I find that funny and a bit silly

I'm always reading forums where Europeans take issue with or make fun of this. We're damned if we do and damned if we don't. Constantly told how the USA is such a young country, yet quick to be reminded we should not speak of the countries our ancestors came from (as if we are all aboriginal here). Culturally, yes, we're American and that is different from the rest of the world. Linguistically we're usually Anglophones. Ethnically, we're a blend or whatever groups our ancestors came from and we shouldn't be expected to forget that.

As for me, "Southern White American". Yes, its something of an ethnic group in its own right. Quiz most white people in the American South who's family has been there for generations and you'll find they're mostly a blend of English and Scots-Irish (Ulster Scot) often with a bit of the Five Civilized Tribes mixed in. All of my ancestors have been in North America for at least 250 years, so I won't say I'm English (although all four of my grandparents surnames are English) or Cherokee or whatever. "Southern" is about as specific as I can get.

Before my family showed up in America about three hundred years ago, we were all irish. My last name, Rathbun, is derived from an old Irish name (Rathbone). My dad told me recently that one of my ancestors fought in the American Revolutionary War as a sea captain in league with http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Paul_Jones, so that's pretty cool.

But my Mom has plenty of Scottish in her, so I've personally got some of that as well.

... by the way, despite my heritage I'm actually really even-tempered and I've trained myself to conceal any other serious emotion quite well. So, I used to be pretty sensitive but now I'm not. You missed it, ladies.

Oh yeah, I know I've also got some kind of native American heritage, but my blood is probably only 1/300 parts native American so it doesn't manifest itself in any noticeable way and I don't care.

German, Czech, Swedish, and Polish. And some Italian somewhere in there.

Don't know much about my families history, not even sure when we came to America.

My last name, Walters, is German. Apparently it means something along the lines of "ruler of army"

Celtic and German. I usually only say that when someone asks about my ancestory. If they ask what my ethnicity is I say either white or American since my family has lived in America for many generations.

2nd gen American. Origins are Londonderry (Derry?), Lisbon, and Rostock. So that makes up Irish, Portuguese, and German. That only goes back to early 19th Century. As of the 20th Century I have two half-sisters that are Filipino-American (with a mix of Chinese, Spanish, and Malay), as my Dad remarried when we lived in the Philippines. Future generations will also add that in I suppose.

Huh... Same here, actually. I've got a lone Scotsman way back in my family too. I forget how long ago exactly, but it was 300-400 years.

Your ancestor's first name wasn't Alexander, was it?
