Your ethnicity and ancestry

Post » Wed May 16, 2012 10:57 am

So what is your ethnicity? I know a lot of you live in different countries, but I wanted to know what is your ethnicity? I'm Scottish and Italian from what I know from my parents. Scottish on my fathers side and Italian on my mothers.

I'm an American mix but I have a red beard so I proclaim my Celtic ancestry. Because it's awesome. And an excuse to drink. And drink a lot. And drink I shall!

I'm almost totally Hungarian except for a Prussian great-grandmother and a Russian great-grandfather. Oh totally forgot, if you go back a thousand years or so, I'm a nomadic warrior, closely related to Huns, Mongols and the like.

I drink a lot too. I'm buzzed right now. But yeah, I have dark red hair. But my facial characteristics look mostly like my moms.

My mother's side is pretty much entirely Anglo-Saxon. My father's family is descended from Swedish immigrants to the US, I possess a Scandinavian surname and middle name as a result.

My last name is German because my Scottish grandfather was adopted. The crazy thing is, him and my mother were born in the same hospital in Canada.

Heh, just 1.5 weeks ago my father put up our family tree on the Ancestry website, which I think is very cool. He done a massive amount of work with it too, and currently it have over 2000 people in the database, I can go back several centuries and look

Anyway, the family haven't moved much in the past 400 years (~10 miles or so). A little over 400 years there was a Scotsman who came to Sweden and died here though, and he became an ancestor of mine. But it's kinda cool, to see that someone 400-500 years ago was born, lived and died in a small village outside of the town I grew up. I mean, I've been there.

Another thing that is kinda cool, considering the owl avatar I use here (and been using for over a decade now), is that our family crest looked like http://d2.o.mfcreative.com/f1/file04/objects/3/9/9/439978a4-2b0a-4061-8a4d-a6aa9e0411c4-0.jpg back in the 16th century.

So yeah, I'm 99.9999% swedish and a little scottish

American first and foremost.

But, I'm from German, Dutch, Irish and Scottish decent. Which, may also be a large part of why I'm always pissed off.

Time to alienate myself from all the Scots on this board.

Clan Campbell.

That's only a quarter though. Another quarter Irish and the rest Norske.

Dutch father, Belgian mother. I know very little about my family history, though I know that my Belgian family is originally from the Netherlands, and my Dutch family originally from Belgium. I mostly inherited my father's features. I'm a 187cm tall, blue/grey eyed, blonde maned Germanic god. :P

I find that amazing. My Scottish grandfather on my dads side never found out who is actual father was. But we found out the last name, McCaghy I think.

If you think about it, our family could've been related thousands of years ago in some Celtic village. Crazy.

Both of my grandparents on my mother's side emigrated to America from the Check side of Checkoslovokia, making my Mom 100% Check and I'm 50%... The rest is a mix of Welsch and the Nords who [censored] them.

Well I was born in USA but my parents are both English. Their parents are all English. My aunts and uncles are English. I haven't really asked about anything further back... though my dad did mention once that his grandmother was Scottish.

I don't really know much about my parents/family. I know where my parents were born (I think :D)... that's about it.

Mixture of Scottish and French. Possibly others mixed in, but those are the ones I know of.

If you're starting from scratch, something like Ancestry is very helpful. If you know where some of your people are from, there are online archives for many Countries that can give you a lot of information (I have copies of my GGGG grandfather's baptism record from 1781).

Both parents English, only my mum's really been into her family history, but all English as well on that front I think. WIsh I had some interesting lineage, really.

I could be wrong here, but it seems like Americans tend to care a lot more about their ancestry than most people. You see a lot of Americans claiming to be Scottish or Irish or whatever just because they had a great-great-great-grandparent from that country or something.

The site is nice, but it wouldn't be possible to put up all that information there if my father hadn't done a crazy amount of research to collect all that information to begin with. He have spent a lot of time as a hobbyist genealogist in the past 2 decades.

Hehe, yeah, I find that funny and a bit silly

I remember there was a guy on this forum once who claimed he was an italian but he didn't know the italian language at all, which wasn't really a surprise as his family been americans for a century or more.

I don't go around saying I'm Scottish to everyone or I'm half Italian, because there's so many others with the same heritage. I think Americans do that because they live in a country full of immigrants.

I believe I am one of the few people I know who give little care about their ancestry. If someone asks I typically say American.

I'm a hybrid . My mother is norwegian and my father is a turkish kurd. Born and raised in Norway. Needless to say I'm much more connected to the norwegian side of my family (I don't even speak turkish or kurdish), so I'm kinda curious about my ancestry.. On both sides really.

Since I live in an area settled by the Dutch 170 years ago, when people ask, I say I'm Dutch, even though only half of the ancestors came from the Netherlands (the name is Dutch).
