I thought V for Vendetta was distinctly average. I don't see what's so good about it?

Me too, it's amazing soundtrack, Cruise is the best actor for that movie.I love the quote about finding the most perfect cherry blossom flower, ...they are all perfect, I cry every time I see Katsumoto dying.
The main problem I have with most Tom Cruise movies is I can't get over the fact that it was Tom Cruise in the role. I feel that for a movie not to affect me like this he either needs to play someone who is very flawed in some way or one of his costars needs to steal the show.

I loved the Last Samurai(third favourite Tom Cruise movie) because not only did he play an alcoholic, but you also have Ken Watanabe's brilliant performance(an Oscar nomination I agree with).
Then you also have the Minority Report(Second favourite Tom Cruise movie) and I won't give away his flaw in there, but it went a long way in humanizing him.
Collateral(my favourite Tom Cruise movie) has Jamie Foxx who did an amazing job moving the focus off the fact that Tom Cruise is in the movie.

I always thought people loved it or hated it, you're the first person I've encountered who thought it was average. I loved it because many of the ideals in the movie mirror my own, Hugo Weaving is just brilliant in everything he does and Natalie Portman rarely disappoints.

I can only choose 10?

1. Gran Torino - This movie is just amazing.
2. The Dark Knight - Simply fantastic, might want to watch Batman Begins too.
3. The Lord of the Rings trilogy - I got nothing that hasn't already been said about this one.
4. The Sawshank Redemption - It's just great.
5. V for Vendetta - This one simply never gets boring, I've seen it countless times.
6. Alien and it's sequels - well mainly Alien and Aliens, Alien 3 is ok, resurrection is not even worth watching though.
7. Star Wars - The original trilogy, the prequels are ok I guess, but not as good. If you can get your hands on an older version that George Lucas haven't [censored] with at least.
8. Jason Bourne - this is probably one of the best series of action films ever made.
9. Any old Disney movie - I think my favourite is Hercules, but there are simply so many great ones that I can't decide.
10. My name is Khan - This movie isn't very known, but it tells an absolutely amazing story and is worth a watch.

I could probably give you tons of other movies that are on par with these (Silence of the Lambs and Red Dragon comes to mind), but these are the ones that are currently on my top ten. This tend to change with my mood so the list might not be the same for me tomorrow.
I would've included "Black Hawk Down" and "Saving Private Ryan" if I didn't restrict myself to 10 movies lol

In no real order.

1: Snatch.
2: Fight Club.
3: The Football Factory.
4: The Road.
5: Throw Momma From the Train.
6: Doomsday.
7: Goodfellas.
8: Watchmen.
9: Sin City.
10: Twelve Monkeys.

There would be much more, but I'm only allowed 10.

For movies to watch many times over....

I'll go with Van Helsing. There is something about that movie I really like. I think it weaves together the old horror movie themes beautifully, along with great acting and special effects.

Also Lord of the Rings Trilogy (particularly Return of the King), 300, and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.

...My friend wants me to watch Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. I've got a list of "films to watch" as well as my favourites....

There is something about that movie that is great. Even though the main characters do some pretty awful stuff. This is perhaps Johnny Depp's best performances, or at least one of them. If you don't take it too seriously, it's a lot of fun.

Regarding the Matrix series...

There's story in those movies? I though they were collections of CGI rendered fight scenes...

No discernible story as far as I could tell. Just a lot of special effects and fighting, mixed in with some pseudo pretentious babble.

Regarding Last Samuri

I adored that movie. One of Cruise's best performances, ...

I am not a Tom Cruise fan, but I think his best movie is "Valkyrie". It was a great portrayal of the best known plot to kill Hitler. It's tense, but not an action movie. Very well done, and Cruise does not over act in the movie. In my opinion.

Amen to that. No, wait, there was story in the first one. It was plenty corny, but the movie was still awesome. Then it got... weird.

No order here.

Willow
Princess Bride
Moon
Serenity
Lion, Witch, and the Warddrobe
The Matrix
Miyazaki Movies(Spirited and Mononoke in particular)
Terminator 2: Judgement Day
Airplane!
Gran Torino

6. Dark City
Oh man that's been a while. I need to watch that again.

They Call me Trinity

Was always a fan of My Name is Nobody out of that trilogy. Now http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t7JOsXqTmUk&feature=player_detailpage#t=434s is a duel.

The problem I had with Valkyrie was that I couldn't get over the fact that it was Tom Cruise in the role of a German officer. He didn't even change his accent, which completely threw me in the midst of all of these British and German accents. I still enjoyed the movie, but I personally still prefer the ones I mentioned in my last post.

Don't worry dude, it's no where near as bad as Sean Connery playing a Russian submarine officer.

I already had a couple of Sergio Leone movies on my list so I thought I would list one of the Trinity movies. My Name is Nobody is great, though, I love it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uvkBTGvW5Vw

edit: on topic, I watched http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Double_Indemnity_%28film%29 last night. Highly recommend it if you're into film noirs :)

1) Shaun of the Dead
Loved it, hilarious plus zombies.

2) American Pie (well 1 & 2)
Wasn't as crazy as my highschool years, but I love these 2.

3) Lord of the Rings (yess all of them and I am counting it as one lol)
Seen these movies over a hundred times and still love them. I love almost anything related to Tolkein's work

4) Harold and Kumar (well haven't seen the 3rd but still)
Nothing really special, I just find them hilarious.

5) Dracula (1931)
Just a classic film. Yea its old but I enjoy it a lot.

6) Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back
Its Jay & Silent Bob, that should be enough lol

7) Of Mice and Men (1992)
Loved the book, and when I saw this I thought it was amazing. One of the few movies I cried during..

8) The Mist
Ah I love the way they ended this movie, it was such a shocker at the time and I'm so glad they didn't just leave it as some cliffhanger

9) Paradise Lost (all 3)
I've always like these documentaries, I followed the case for a long time and its just something I enjoyed.

10) The Punisher (2004)
Probably wasn't the greatest Superhero movie, but I love the Punisher and really got into this. Seems like it had everything at the time: Action, Drama, Comedy, etc.

Notable entries:
the 40 Year Old Virgin
Vanishing on 7th Street
Clerks 2
8 Mile
I Love You, Man

Sean Connery and John Wayne have special exemptions. They are only ever required to play them selves, however unsuited to the character they are playing they might be. I believe Harrson Ford is seeking the same status.

Hot Fuzz
The Duellists (the one made in 1977 with Harvey Kietel and Keith Caradine)
Time and Tide (the action one from 2000) so many different movies have the same title
A History of Violence
Gangs of New York
District B13
The Attic Expiditions
Big Trouble in Little China
The Count of Monte Cristo (I liked the 2002 remake)
The Mist

I guess those would probably be the first ten I would chose if I saw them around.

Even though they aren't the same whenever I talk about A History of Violence, I usually end up talking about Eastern Promises too, ever seen it? Now I cant believe I didn't put them in my list lol
