Anybody Else Dislike the New Vegas Housing Selection?

Post » Sun Mar 06, 2011 3:19 pm

I use the Lucky 38 only because it's the only player house I can send the companions to, but I prefer the look and style of the Novac room. It's the most Fallout-ish looking player-home. IDK... Something about it just screams "Post-apocalyptia."

Novac. The last thing I want in a house is to have to go through several load screens to get into it. Novac allows me to fast travel to withing 50' of the door to my room. I dispise going to Freeside and the Strip due to the excessive load screens.

Personally using the shack abit southwest of Novac, ontop of a hill, somewhat close to a Deathclaw nest.
It has loads of containers, a bed, reloading bench, a workbench. It's a 2 room shack so quite big but not too big for you to furnish with random crap :D

I use that one as well. It is called Harper's shack.
Bed, workbench, re-loading bench and a campfire just outside the door.
Two lockers in one room three in the other with ammo boxes, shelving and a central table.
The only drawbacks are constant creature and enemy spawns nearby but if you fast travel in and out its not a problem.

EXACTLY what I've been looking for. Thank you.

I want to find a place where I wake up beside random people, too, now. :D

The only thing I hate about the Lucky 38 suite is that;

1. There aren't any windows. It doesn't feel right without a window.
2. Those stupid followers keep stealing food and weapons whenever I try to decorate my house.

Nothing but the best at 38. I like the ambient music there which makes the place more empty.

The last thing the Lucky 38 needs is to feel MORE empty.

I hope they're really paying attention to some of these awesome mods people are making for the PC versions of the game. Just about every PC mod for player housing 'gets it' and does an awesome job of exemplifying what player housing should be. I really loved that mini-Vault Water Tower mod.

Thing is, I play on Console. So I don't have these kinds of toys.

But maaaaan, I would love it if they could officially review some of these things to port into the console versions as part of some DLC packages. Such cool stuff is being made that I am pretty much starting to wish I hadn't gotten a console version of the game at all.

I live in Novac because it's got both a Reloading Bench and Work Bench. The only thing the town's missing is a Campfire. I know there's one in that shack by Gibson's Scrapyard, but that's a pretty long walk. Especially if you're over encumbered. I'd rather have one of the bungalows in Novac than just a room. I don't mind living at The Tops, but having to deal with multiple loading screens is very annoying.

I wish they would do 1 or 2 oblivion-like house style dlcs, none of the player housing cuts it for me.If they dont add any more houses, I at least wish theyd add a luck 38 fast travel point.

I use Harper's Shack since it has everything I need, although I am thinking of removing the two tables in the middle of the floor since they just get in the way.

The only fault I find with it is that it's a bit too far south, however there's no good location in the middle that's not already occupied. I am thinking of setting up a place up in the hills somewhere not far from Hidden Valley, however that area of the map is congested with encounter locations.

Yes. Should be a quest relaited with it as well. Then when it's all done, you have a little more respect for what it is as well.

Early on I usually stay at the Bison Steve sometimes Victor's Shack, also the camp at Goodsprings source is perfectly safe. After I move on from there I have a modded apartment in Freeside, or the room at5 the wrangler if I don't feel like living on the strip. There are also a few homes on the northern outskirts of Vegas which I may try out down the road. When I feel like living on the strip its the Lucky 38. Really housing in this game is endless

I hate walking up to a place titled something like "Bob's Shack" and there not actually being a Bob there. How in the hell does my character know there was once a dude named Bob here? If anything, it just makes me feel even more that the game got pushed out WAAAAY ahead of time, because it suggests there was supposed to be some sort of content there.

The one that really got me was walking up to Cannibal Johnson's Cave, wondering who Cannibal Johnson was, MEETING Cannibal Johnson, and then ASKING him if he was really a cannibal. Was there a sign I missed? Nothing in the dialog indicated I'd ever heard of the guy before, and if he mistakes a guest for the Grim Reaper, I imagine he doesn't get out much...

Also, to the OP: Of course this got moved to spoilers. It details what you find at a number of specific locations that need to be discovered by players. That's spoilery.

And finally, on topic: I use Novac because of the benches, campfire, merchants, caravan players, water, and nearby campfire. (There is one even closer than the one near the Gibson shack, up near a cave to the right of the road leading to the Repconn test site, beside an old electrical tower.) I may start using Goodsprings again, though, as there are outdoor beds, Chet sells throwing knives, there are still benches, and the water is not irradiated. When I am on the strip and don't feel like fast traveling away to store things, I either drop it in the Drop Box to Novac or stick it in the Tops Suite, which I like using better than the Lucky 38.

I just hate it that we must walk to a gate and walk to a door and walk to a lift and press the life button and select the floor to get to our home in Lucky 38. So many precious seconds (in real time!) wasted just doing it everyday in the game. :banghead:

Personally, I'll stay as close to the Mojave Express boxes. I collect everything. It's handy to be able to ship it between various points (especially Goodsprings and Novac) Because then I can sell it without having to be encumbered for too long (and that's with my companions carrying their max weight too). But lately my character's been hanging out more and more at Novac. It's just convenient. And the room is free if you do a couple of good deeds for the place. (Yeah, stingy with caps too!).

I usually end up staying in Novac because I don't' feel like moving everything around, but my first place that I stay is actually the Nevada Highway patrol Station. I don't know why, and I rarely go back and get stuff, but it's the first place i feel safe leaving stuff, since it's not in the city but still somewhat in civilization.

I used the Lucky 38 Presidential Suite as my house after it became available because I felt that it was the safest place to store my stuff without losing access to the comforts of civilization, such as a bath, fridge, comfortable bed, etc. But all the loading screens are a pain. I don't understand why the map marker for the Strip deposits you in front of the main gate instead of in front of the Lucky 38, and why the Victor outside can't take you to the Presidential Suite directly. That way I'd only have one loading screen (plus one for fast traveling, but that's unavoidable) instead of three. I considered staying in Novac because of that, but it felt too out-of-character since there is nothing there to prevent a break-in from leaving me with only the stuff on my back.

At the very beginning, I put my stuff in a metal box in Doc Mitchell's, then I used the house across from the Saloon in Goodsprings. Then I used a house in Nipton. Then the Room in Novac. I use the suite in the 38 now, because I like sending my followers, there. I dislike the room in the Wrangler, because if you take any of the stuff in it, it is considered stealing. I think that it's funny that if I sleep in my Lucky 38 suite, sometimes I'll wake up with one of my followers next to me. I usually only go to my suite to change followers, though.

I saw that the containers were marked red, but I didn't notice any karma loss from taking or leaving stuff there. Mostly I never use the room because the containers look too small for the stuff I'd want to stow, it takes too many loading screens to get to it, and there aren't any immediately nearby benches to craft with.

I hear some boxes do clear out items and replace them with new items (mailboxes..?), but it's never happened to me. I've never lost anything put in a random cabinet, wardrobe, Sunset Sarsaparilla crate, etc.
