Anyone else play with music off?

Post » Thu Jun 07, 2012 6:47 pm

That was the first thing I done on the day of the release. I have yet to turn it on.

You can hear the butterflies, for crying out loud...

I got really tired of the music in Oblivion, but I'll never tire of Skyrims.

Turning the music off is one of the first options I change when I start playing a new game. I would much rather listen to the sounds of the game than some music track playing.

Thank you. If there's any modern composer that does deserve the title, it's Clint Mansell, and he has nothing to do with video games.

in elder scrolls games i do eventually turn the music off so i can actually be surprised by enemy appearences and hear the actual sounds of the game without an invisible orchestra blaring in my ear but turning off the compass was a day 1 necessity i do not want or need to know exactly when i am going to run into an enemy or discover a location.

Both good ideas...might try that.

:ooo:

No. [censored]. Way.

*gigglesquee*!!!!!

Oh ... :cryvaultboy: ... I have a bad feeling about this. The rest of the game (considering how badly Bioware does story) can't possibly match up to the score.

If it were Valve making use of him, I'd be ecstatic. But this is Bioware.

Clint Mansell is a sellout? How disappointing.

I turn the music off after I hear all of it. I mean I geuss you could rp that your dragon born likes to hum his own theme song while he's travelling the land.

I would, but the tavern music is just far too awesome to turn it off. I really despise the battle theme, though. It kills the mood. In Daggerfall, no matter what your action, specific areas had specific themes. It made dungeons creepy, graveyards ethereal, cities peaceful, and taverns jolly.

I`ll let you guys in on a secret. I never listen to ingame music while I`m playing, but I still like the music... I think these soundtracks are all brilliant. I just like listening the world as I explore it.

..So I rip the music and install it on my MP3 or mobile so I can listen to it while working. I have dozens of ingame music I listen to this way from the FF series to Battlefield 3 andthe Total War games.

This way I can have my cake and eat it!

I turn it off, then turn on the radio.

I like playing while listening to Hendrix, Doors, Led Z, Pink Floyd, etc.

Depends.

Usually I throw on a 15 disc-box set containing all of Chopin's Piano pieces.

Modern composers of talent use video games as their platforms. We are seeing genius here. If Bach were writing today, it would be in a video game.

lolwut.

u dum

Can you even define music of the Baroque era?

lolwut

lolololol

I turn the music off completely. I like to hear the sounds of the actual game world and not some musical score blasting away. Don't get me wrong I love the music, but not while I am playing the game.

To me there are few things more irritating that hearing music playing when I am crawling through a dark shadowy dungeon or lost in a snowstorm at night.

This is an interesting once, on one hand I love the music, it is so fantastic and suits whereever you are! But then there was a time when I think my game bugged and the music didn't come on when I loaded a saved game, I was wandering across the tundra and all of a sudden the game came to life! I could hear the wind whistling, a pack of wolves howling nearby then all of a sudden while I was standing still taking all this experience in I got whacked from behind by a bandit! Scared the #^#@^ out of me lol Then I noticed the CLANG sound as his sword hit my shield and I counter-struck him and the battle was joined! I really never noticed the battle sounds before but WOW!

I love the music don't get me wrong, but having it off for a little was like a new experience after 150 hours of gameplay :)

when i first get a game like skyrim i always keep the music on until i become familiar with it and determine how i feel about it. music is part of the overall package of a game. as well, i like to see how it works within the game world. (skyrim has done a better job of not giving away enemies too early and it seems that i always see most enemies before the music gives them away.)

later, i will spend a lot of time playing with the music completely off to get a feel for that aspect of the game. from that point on it's just a matter of how i feel for any particular gaming session.

however, i will say that when i'm playing a "dead is dead" game or happen to feel like it I will turn the music, hud, markers, crosshair, etc. ALL off and truly immerse myself within the game.

regardless, the music in this game has some of those great songs from past games and without a doubt gets a perfect score: 10/10

My pick goes to Koji Kondo. Not only does he make catchy tunes and great pieces, but he also made some breathtaking work with the Super Mario Galaxy Orchestra.

I turn the music off and listen to my own MP3s. I just assume my character has an MP3 player. You know... er... some sort of magic Daedric earring that pipes futuristic music into my brain.

But I do think the atmospheric sound is stellar. I've played with zero music for extended periods on many occasions. It's especially great when you first start out and don't know what to expect.

I'll probably turnn it off at some point. I normally get bored after I'm used to the music (and the cues) but Skyrim is still new to me.

I did that in oblivion sooner than I think I will in Skyrim. Oblivions loops got old real quick!

I'll most likely turn sound and the compass off at the same time when I'm ready for FULL immersion.

I turned off the music completely, and left everything else default. I haven't gone back. It's awesome to just listen to the wind in the trees and the waves on the ocean. You can also hear enemy footsteps from a long ways off. It also got anoying to me to have the music blasting over conversation so I couldn't even hear what people were saying. I would recommend this to anyone who hasn't tried it.
Never gave it much thought, but you have piqued my interest.
I think I may do this tomorrow morning when I play before work (the wife is off tonight  ) I'll let you know what I think!

I've actually played with the music off for a while now and I haven't felt the urge to turn it back on. It doesn't seem to take away from the experience to not have the music.
