Anyone else rarely using shouts?

Post » Sat Jun 02, 2012 7:16 am

Let me start by saying the shout system is a great addition to the TES games. A lot of shouts seem very useful in combat situations, especially when being in tight spot.

Then why am I only using Unrelenting Force to move Lydia when she's blocking my path?

I played all TES games from Daggerfall and I seem kinda "programmed" to only use spells, weapons and shields. Must be my age or something... I really do see the value of using a shout now and then, but somehow I just can't get used to pressing "Z". Anyone else suffering from Shout Phobia?

I use the sprint shout to get from one place to another, it's really handy. Sprint sprint SHOUT sprint sprint sprint.

Unrelenting force I use on bosses only.

I use Shouts pretty extensively. Since I typically play warrior or ranger type characters, as opposed to mages, I find Shouts to be the most effective crowd control available to me. Because I use them habitually in this sense, I find it fairly natural to use them in other contexts too, such as gaining advantage in boss fights.

Well, I've logged over 140 hours so far and haven't used a single shout. Of course I still haven't started the main quest and haven't seen a dragon yet either.

I always forget it's there.

I'm not quite sure how I feel about the dragon fights shouts being mandatory in general, but I can see them being appropriate for some characters, and for those characters it's a pretty cool feature.

If only I could remember to use them.

This is me on my second playthrough. I admit, I'm enjoying it more than my first.

I found the Ice Form shout to be quite useful at times. If you need a bit of time and space to heal or take cover, encasing the enemy in a block of ice comes in very handy.

The shouts can't be used often enough to really be useful. The strong ones have long cool downs so they can't ever ne combined and most fights just don't last long enough. I make a point to use them and they can be very handy but I wouldn't notice out be all that annoyed if they went away.

Become Ethereal is the only one I make much use of. Since they share a cooldown, and you can only have one bound to something at a time(lame but whatever), I really only use a favorite and have it equipped most of the time.

Not really, the best crowd control is to kill them all with your 2 handed sword.
Kill them twices btw, necromancers are tricky.

Shouts are a stupid. Why bother to tack them on when the game has enough going for it?

Over 100 hours, and I still barely use shouts, if at all. They seem incredibly gimmicky to me, and I much prefer classic melee and magic combat. That said, my list of shouts is quite limited since I still haven't seriously gone dungeon delving, becuase gaining new shouts doesn't motivate me that much (I just don't like them), although I have just gained the storm shout and that seems to have potential.

Pretty much. In Oblivion the shout button used to be a hot key and in Morrowind you used to have a quick time wheel.

Seriously the games going backwards when it comes to mechanics.

It was actually my 2H character that got me into this habit. Attacking with a 2H takes longer and opens you up to counter attack, so a well timed Unrelenting Force or Fire Breath can buy enough time to kill one or two enemies with impunity.

I'm level 42 and am currently exploring to pick up all 20 shouts ... that's 60 power stones (half way through). I've used whirlwind a bit to get around cliffs and rooftops and past traps, used ethereal to drop threat ... and now that I picked up Dragonrend ... I use that all the time against dragons.

I'll chime in with agreement for those who forget about shouts. The only time I really wind up using them is the sprint shout to get to places. Of course, this might partially be due to still being early in the main quest - once again like some of the others I've devoted a massive amount of time to visiting every dungeon I can find.

Ethereal is my favorite shout, way better than whirlwind sprint to get to places since the cool down is short and you can go far with the infinite sprint while it's active.

I use shouts quite a bit. Maybe not every combat but in big battles they give you an important edge.

I rarely use shouts because as some others have already pointed out you tend to forget about them  Though after hitting master level in destruction I'm seeing myself make extensive use of the slow time shout, it makes casting those blizzards and fire storms a lot, and by a lot I mean A LOT, easier :flamethrower:

Naah shouts are pretty pointless adn boring and they remove the uniqueness of magic. That said I hope there are no shouts in the next game.

I like the shouts, but they are mostly toys. Many of the effects I hope remain in future games as spells.

My favourite....... Clear Skies.. utterly useless out of context, but its awesome when freezing to death near winterhold, and decide.. NO. The Snow SHALL STOP.

Ha, yes. Windhelm's weather has improved quite a bit since my Dovahkiin learned that one.
