Are you happy with your lifestyle?

Post » Fri Dec 09, 2011 1:01 am

I know many people here are for lack of a better word nerds. So my question to all of you is : are you happy with the lifestyle you live? Would you rather have not found a love for video games and lived a more social people orientated life? Or is this the life you chose for yourself instead of just falling into it ?

I can live as social as I want (I like to think); I tend to relax more by myself though...

Yeah, I know some of my friends are a little socially-awkward, but personally, I do not share this problem. The issue is, only a couple of my friends actually are like me (where we love gaming and geeking out, but also just going around and enjoying "normal" social-life). I hate that most of my friends are too exclusive when it comes to hanging out... like some of my geek friends hate my other friends, and vice versa.. It is really awkward for me because then I feel like I'm not as close with either group lol. My best friends are the ones I can do both with, but I like them all.

i think this is a great thread. me personally, i seem to be able to keep a good balance between work, family, and gaming. for the most part my wife is usually happy with the balance in our lives. although it DID get a little unbalanced when we were both raiding in top guilds in WoW. responsibilities always come before games. as long as you have your priorities straight then you should be happy.

I started playing video games with my dad when I was little. It was our 'thing' that we bonded over, and the educational games I got helped me get my math grades up. In highschool, I found my social clique via the anime/video game club. I never had that awkward trying-to-find-where-I-belong phase in hs because from the beginning I found people that had something in common with me, thanks to gaming. When I was 17 I got my first job at GameStop, that hired me because of my extensive gaming knowledge. I met some of my very best friends while working there, including my boyfriend whom I've been dating for the past 4 years. When we started dating we were both broke, so we would have in-game dates in World of Warcraft when we couldn't afford to go out to dinner. He worked at Harmonix for awhile before deciding to go back to school and now I'm pursuing a degree in video game art.

TL;DR: Video games have enhanced EVERY ASPECT of my life, especially my social life. I wouldn't trade being a nerd for the world :)

does this have anything to do with anything? people seem to think video games are something completely different from life
but they are just another part no different from sports music movies etc this thread has nothing to do with skyrim if the author
is feeling insecure just know there are millions like him but dont go to the internet for empathy.

I'm getting used to it.
Some might consider it an improvement.

Well. Here in Sweden playing videogames is more or less the norm. But I'll admit doing it more than the average person, probably. But then again, 90% of that time is spent with friends on Skype and when I'm not the lot of us are probably hanging out somewhere, so, I'm rather happy.

And dear god, how I sound like I try to justify myself. :P

Regrets, I've had a few
But then again, too few to mention
I did what I had to do and saw it through without exemption
I plotted each charted course, each careful step among the byway
And more, much more than this, I did it my way

I'm incredibly happy with my lifestyle, wouldn't want any other one.

You also made two assumptions:

1. That I love video games (I don't, they are enjoyable from time to time, but I don't play them much)

2. that playing video games somehow inhibits your ability to have a socially oriented life (it doesn't)

I am just a nerd in my room. Outside I am highly occupied with politics, art, friends and exercising. Many of my friends are high up in the political and artistic society. To be honest, I think I only got 2-3 "geeks" as friends, as I tend to prefer friends who use most of their time out in the society, not behind a computerscreen. I think the culture here encourages the people to partake directly in the society than in many other countries.
