Yes, they go back to where you found them.

If you've already been to the Lucky 38, then they go there.

They tell you where they're going when they leave.

I don't think it's a spoiler....
If you follow the main quest at your first mail stop (Courier office) he's lying on the table, broken down.
You can choose to attempt to fix him using parts, Repair, or Science and complete it's optional quests.
Or just lug it around as a pack mule with a laser.
(That's what I do).

You can choose to attempt to fix him using parts, Repair, or Science and complete it's optional quests.
Or just lug it around as a pack mule with a laser.

I believe you get gifts from them that are left in a location, such as ammo and medical items.

You can buy various weapon mods from different merchants/gun runners. There aren't that many at all near the start but as you progress you should start to see alot more up for sale in various locations across the Mojave. I don't think theres a laser for the hunting rifle but you can purchase the scope at Gun Runners, by the east gate in Freeside.

And to equip the mod to your gun, simple get the pip boy screen up, highlight the hunting rifle and press left bumper (assuming you play Xbox like me), if your on the computer just look at the legends in the top right corner, should tell you there.
