Brink Is A Clean Shooter!

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 10:10 am

Ever since the Beginning first-person-shooters have been one of the most popular video game genres out there.
But for years first-person-shooters have been weighed down by explicit content, from strong language, to sixual content, to unrealistically gory scenes and game play.
Nearly every first-person-shooter made has gotten an M rating by ESRB standards, most of which had descriptors of blood, gore, strong language, and in some of the worst cases sixual content.
Though in most cases its kept to a minimum, the fact that its there still remains.
Brink appears to be garbage free. And twice as cool as Halo and Call Of Duty Combined.
If they market this right they may have a chance to be a best seller world wide.

You realise that kids can get M games by getting someone older to buy it for them so a game being T isn't going to have as much as an effect as you think.

Well the rating is one thing, the content is another. No, there is not much language in Brink and if there are scenes of sixuality then they will most certainly be quite odd, what with all the elongated monkey people and the male-only island, so yeah it should be a step forward to genuine maturity in FPS games rather than just mature content.

It's not a man only island. It's a man only war. If it was a man only island what would be the point of fighting if the species is going to die off anyways

You could say the same thing about kids getting cigarettes, or guns. But that doesn't make it true.

There have been a multitude of FPS games that don't go heavy on the content so I don't see Brink as anything new there, but I do know what you mean. It's unfortunate the kind of stuff that seems to saturate the genre in the name of "gritty realism".

I don't think it's going to make a huge difference though, since Ratings seem to be a bit of a joke.

The point isn't whether or not kids buy M rated games. But whether or not people prefer cleaner games.

Unfortunately you are mistaken. Black Ops is partly so successful because it contains so many of the qualities you listed above, and there is a gigantic market for the "realistic" fps, which comes with sweary marines and blood splatter as standard. Then you have Gears of War, which can probably owe some of its huge popularity to the fact you can chainsaw people into a bloody mess and i think no amount of marketing will change this.

The fact of the matter is that regrettably there is not a huge urge for an intellligent, and fairly clean, fps with a quirky art style and a focus on team play. shame really.

Your right, the ratings are getting a lot more confusing and a lot less helpful.
But not even giving a care won't help anything.

Short answer would be no. There's a reason that classics like Duke Nukem, Mortal Kombat, and the like continue to survive and it isn't because they're "good" games.

I generally don't care one way or the other, but am not a fan of excess anything. If it isn't over the top and makes sense it usually doesn't even get noticed.

Most people either don't care about that kind of stuff or prefer bad language and gore in their games.

Actually MW2 sold three times as many copies as Black ops has. That's comparing them three months after launch

And what does that have to do with gore and language in games? If anything they're equally gore filled.

And by what grounds do you state that? by what the magazines say? by online polls? or just by your personnel opinion?

Black Ops is way worse in comparison to MW2. check the rating. or play the game.

And for the record Black Ops sold 5.6M copies UTD [Up To Date] while Super Mario Galaxy 2 sold 6.15M copies 7 months after launch.

@Mathonn
Define excess. what is the limit by your standards? there is a limit right?

Playing both MW2 and Black Ops, they have the same amount of violence and blood when you shoot people. Also, MW2 had plenty of violence and blood in it and that is why a lot of people play shooters. To virtually kill people.
Also, comparing Black Ops to Mario Galaxy 2 is comparing Apples to Oranges. Too different genres. It's like saying Splitsecond is better than Dead Space 2. That's a racing game compared to a shooter. Not the same therefore not a valid argument.

I thought we were talking in terms of FPS games? obviously there are hugely popular games in other genres like sports games and platformers but thats nothing to do with this

*EDIT* ahh italiandevil you beat me too it :)

Excess is dependent upon the game genre, but generally anything that proves to go beyond what is needed to create a feel is excess. I don't need guys cursing every other word, don't need blood squirting all over the camera, don't need to see virtual six pretty much ever.

I admit games like Splatterhouse over do it but not all games. Some blood is good for a game like if they're going for realism. And Bulletstorm is infamous for it's language but some cursing makes it more realistic. You find me someone who hasn't cursed on a real battlefield. And finally I agree completely. Keep six out of games.

Good question, ummm... I'm gonna guess that they're simply allowing this topic to "evolve" in a way. So that it survives longer in the forums.

If I wanted to see six I'd go watch a rated R movie or google it. I just want my violence, gore, and profanity. If a game doesn't have the gore and profanity I will still play it because I know someone online will do the profanity part.
