Can we please get Brand-Shei out of jail?!

Post » Thu Jun 07, 2012 3:59 pm

Hopefully Bethesda actually fixes this bug too.
While they're at it they may as well fix the bug associated with the "escape route" in the Riften Jail, the one where for some reason after a number of days pass after game start, the secret door and its frame despawn and are replaced by the static wall, leaving an invisible activator that does nothing other than alert the guards to attack you.

I agree.

It would be awesome if the NPCs actually had a jailtime, and when they had spent their time they where free to go (so that not the same people are always in jail). Of corse, it would have a few exceptions...

Seeing some of the criminals get executed like in e.g. Solitude would be awesome too!

I really wish we could take down the thieves guild like we can the Dark Brotherhood...

yes and this is exactly what the thread is about.

On Topic: if you are on pc it can be fixed as ppl have mentioned befor. if you are on consol he'll be there forever (think you still can turn in his quest when he is in jail)

I was doing another quest that involved a tenant at the Jail and noticed that Brand-Shei was still in Jail, and still happy to see me.

It would be nice if he was set free. However, Bethesda has a habit of leaving some Quest NPCs at their last location once the quest is done. They need to tidy up some loose ends as not all quests have this issue, the NPC will leave the cell and at least be disabled for the rest of the game if they do not go back to their home location.

There is a mod that also corrects Brand-Shei's prison time. Search the Worskshop for it.

For PC the console command

set TG00brandsheijail to 0

will fix him. Enter it while watching him and after a bit you'll see him walk out of jail and back to his stall where he will carry on his normal merchant duties. It's better to let his normal scheduling prompt him to leave jail instead of trying to use more commands to move him out of jail quicker.

Also, isn't this bug fixed for anyone just starting it with a patched game?

id like to think that hes put in jail for his own protection. Now hear me out, hes stuck in jail so that he cant die from dragon atks and bandits etc bc we are gonna need him in the future. I speculate he is our reason and way of getting into a certain country for a dlc....

I can dream cant I?

Since Riften seems to be the worst for merchants getting killed by dragons, I'm inclined to agree. That's the hazard of having the best merchants out in the wide-open marketplace.

Not right after he goes in. Leave it a day or so until he cools off a bit or you get a hail of abuse when you visit him. Once he's cooled off a bit, he accepts the item you found and you can complete the quest for him.

It annoys me as well. Its the reason I won't do the Thieves guild quest line(Also because everyone in the Thieves Guild are a bunch of toolbags).

They really need to add a destroy the Thieves Guild quest line. Seriously. Would finally allow me to kill Brynjolf, with his damn infinite health.

Personally, I've entirely given up on the man... I used up three potions of invisibility sneaking into the Riften jail, then a couple of lockpicks getting his cell door open, and he just stands there... come back a day later and, yes, he's still standing there in his unlocked cell. He's as willing as ever to talk about his 'unusual' name, but the thought of walking out the door never seems to cross his tiny stockholm-syndrome addled mind.
Seriously, you could park the "Midnight Special' in front of his cell, stuff half-a-dozen Greyhound tickets up his nose, all the while playing 'The Hurricane' on a lute, and he still wouldn't take the hint.
Stuff 'im.

So your saying he should walk out of his cell to be killed by the guards?

Come to think of it... I'd be curious to see if they would... kill him that is. I once saw city guards do City-Swimmer in Oblivion (can't imagine what she'd done), but I've never seen them harry non-essential NPC's for a not assault-ey crime in Skyrim.
All in all, I'd bet they'd just ignore him... besides, what has he got to lose... at this rate he'll still be inside when 'Dawnguard' comes out.

City Swimmer used to steal food, which was apparently a capital offense in Bravil. In my game she died by falling through the timber bridge and drowning.

There's nothing logical about Brand-Shei just hanging out in jail. Without console commands I guess I'd just role play it as he's sick of the persecution and has decided to stay warm and fed in jail. If you look at the cells in the Riften jail they do look cosy and there's food laid out in them as well. I once tried to keep Iona out of my house by locking her in one of the cells - alas it didn't work.

Have not encountered that bug, but it is a big oversight on there part and that should also definitely be fixed.

You didn't have to send him to jail you know. You can just toss his ring and go talk to Brynjolf and be done with it.

WHAT?!

Damn i never thought of that

OT: Yea its probably a bug, i remember once he somehow got out of jail. Although on my next playthroughs he didnt seem to get released anymore even after the thieves guild quest

To get Brand-Shei out of jail and back to his regular life, simply open the console and type: set TG00BrandSheiJail to 0 after which he will once again sell his wares as he usually does. However, this may cause the thieves guild area to reset.

Can anyone confirm this?

I've used that console cheat to get Brand-Shei out of jail in 2 games. I'd never leave him in jail, considering who he is and me being a proud Dunmer. :P
In my first game he ended up in jail when I did the MQ without going any further with the TG, so cannot say what happened down in the Cistern for this game, but my second game didn't have any TG issues. I practically filled the Cistern with gold bars and covered the bottom of all the water with gems, and nothing has ever changed there, except the vault door has closed.

Lol but then I wouldnt feel like I really proved to myself as a worthy thief to brynjolf!

But he still takes you in. What I do is steal the ring and then go visit the Pawned Prawn for a quick second and then come back out. It fails the quest for you and keeps Bran Shei out of jail.

yea but obviously it must be done before framing him...nothing special though, just a fetch mission

you can still get the quest from him if you visit him in jail

The only time I did the TG questline, I didn't even do that. I let a guard catch me, and paid the fine. Brynjolf was STILL happy to recruit me.

I'd LOVE a questline to off the TG.... *sigh*
